Anyway, I still think in a different system, as #5 or #6 defenseman, Witt has some value.
3rd round pick or project forward/prospect

NO NO NO NO NO NO

WE'VE HAD ENOUGH PROJECTS/PROSPECTS

MAKES ME THINK OF A CERTAIN SINATRA SONG

"IF YOU CANT MAKE IT THERE
WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU CAN MAKE IT HERE
IT'S UP TO YOU BUT WE ARE NEW YORK NEW YORK...."

Yes, and that's fine, see...anything to rid us of Witt, his 3m for next year and the bonus is
our goalies won't have to worry about some long haired galoot screening them.

Then use that money freed up to bring in a FA defensive upgrade in the off season.

Cupz, that was hilarious! Sadly, it was also probably very true.

Witt still has value on a team with a different skating system...

Really? Last year Witt complained about overspeed and may have had some valid beefs about the system. However, since that time, the players have improved and the system has tightened up. There isn't as much room between the forwards and d-men in the middle of the ice, so we tend not to give up as many odd-man rushes as we did last year (but still too many for my liking).

However, Witt is now getting beat in his own zone. He often gets beat to the puck in the corners on little dump ins. Worse, when he gets to to the puck, he is often outmuscled and knocked around by the opposing forward(s). How would playing in the Devils trap-like system improve this aspect of his play? This is supposed to be the strongest part of his game and he's losing these battles. To me, the guy has a tremendous heart but he really seems to be physically shot. While I can understand Witt getting beat in a run-and-gun type system, I now see him getting outplayed in those aspects of his game that are his supposed strengths. Would Witt be better on a team with a "different skating system?" Maybe, but there's very little about his recent play here that would make me think this is so.

nitWitt was getting beat one-on-one out of the corner last year too.
He always had weak lateral movement.

Islanders defenseman Brendan Witt has been placed on waivers

1 m ago By Katie Strang

Islanders defenseman Brendan Witt, who was activated off injured reserve today, will be placed on waivers by the Islanders today at noon.

Witt, who has recently battled through a nagging knee injury, has not played since January 8 against Dallas.

The gritty 34 year-old alternate captain has two goals and three assists in 42 games this year, but saw his ice time dwindle significantly throughout this season.

"The nature of the beast is that in hockey sometimes you have to make tough decisions and this was certainly one of them," Isles gm Garth Snow said. "Everyone knows what Brendan brings to the table, he's a quality person and a fierce competitor."

If Witt clears waivers at noon tomorrow, he will report to Bridgeport.

It is believed that the Islanders tried to shop WItt, but could not get teams to bite. One of the primary reasons is apparently the year remaining on his contract.

Snow said the move is less of a knock on Witt's play and more of an indication of how far along some of the Islanders young defenseman have come and the organization's confidence in their play.

A smart and ballsy move by our GM. Witt is a respected vet, but this is definitely putting the team first. A tip of the hat to Witt for the player he once was....a standing o for our GM for making the tough, but right, decision. Never eays to waive a player with Witt's experience/pedigree...good job Garth.

This is a bit of a surprise. I mean it accomplishes keeping our D faster, but I didn't think Snow had the balls the waive a vet like him.

I hope someone picks him and his contract up because a guy with that much invested in the NHL shouldn't have to play in the AHL.

I guess Kohn gets a full time job up here.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

i smell a trade brewing.. the timing is way off here.. it would explain why garth wouldnt pick up boynton.. its b/c he may have a trade in place to get a dman, but had to clear the room and that room was witt.. and it sounds like gordon didnt know about the move b/c of his comments about witt coming back.. he would have to know witt was coming off IR, but it was clear yesterday that he didnt.. so i smell a rat...

Very good point on one hand.
On the other...

Could it be in hopes that someone picks him up and they free up salary...as in more cutbacks?
I seriously hope not. Just speculation and we have ample reason to think this way given what
has transpired this year in terms of cutbacks in and around this team. Some will say it's an out of left field possibility but a possibility non the less.

We actually have a better cushion than the "floor" because of the slightly under 4m cap total from Yashin and the one-eyed gully-gut pirate buyouts.

No one thought Thompson would be picked up. Look how that turned out.
I like Witt, so when I say this, it is by no means directed at Witt as a player or a person: One man's crap is another man's treasure.

Last season, half of you guys were calling for him to be captain.
Yes, he's slow. Yes, he's lost a step, but I beleive a change of scenery will put a jump in his step. He's had to endure alot of BS with this organization. If he had something to play for, other than lottery picks under a coach he clearly does not see eye to eye with, he may just morph into his older self. Just saying....

remember that defenseman we had a few years ago?
Brad Lukowich. Similar to Witt. Physical but slow, good at blocking shots etc but he sucked here because he was used as a top 4.
Went to the Devils and played as a 5th 6th defenseman and with the reduced minutes..he's more effective...also helps being on a better team.

Good luck to Witt.

Okay, this will go against the sentiment but WTF.

I believe Witter has value. There has to be a team that could use a tough stay at hme defenseman for a playoff run. A team that has a 4 or 5 they aren't happy with, is nicked up or simply not tough enough. If that team exists, I believe Witter will get us a high second.

Now it will be interesting to see how Garth handles this one.

Again, against most of the sentiment I am not unhappy with our lack of moves. Most of what I've read about here would have been moves for the sake of making a move, IMO. Giving Garth the benefit of the doubt, I think he knows what he wants to do and will be patient. And I am okay with that. It is far better than some of what I've seen other teams doing. Jokkinen? Give me a break. That is another Rag dream move. TO? Burke is starting over and starting from Phaneuf. Not a bad idea but he gave away 50 goals to get him. not sure Phaneuf was worrth that.

We have a plan and he is sticking to it (youth, getting even younger and perhaps dipping into the FA market in the off season).

I do not expect any moves, unless he gets the guy he wants (a current NHL roster player that fits our system and is signable long term) by packaging Witter, Biron, Tamby, Sim, Park or any of a number of expendable pieces. If not, he will stand pat.

Just my opinion, it's his call and he's gonna make it. Regardless of what the popular opinion is.

This definitely indicates that Garth has the balls to make a move to help the team. Does this mean they're trying to make more cutbacks? Only if you already have that negative approach. It's funny to see the speculation because it is hit or miss with how reality actually plays out.
