Scott Gordon; Does He Stay or Does He Go?

Our coach is entering the final year of his contract. Fact is, we have not had a coach renew their contract with the team in a LONG team. It gives the impression of an unstable franchise.

I think he needs to make the playoffs to secure his job. I think there are cracks between he and GMG. For example, I don't think Gordon wanted to waive Nate Thompson when it happened. I don't think this is a playoff team yet but GMG put the pressure on his coach by saying we should make the playoffs.

Some of his faults:
specialty teams
late game leads

Some good points:
players like Hillen, Macdonald, Bailey
strong tactician, strategist

Where does everyone think we are with this coach? If you were to replace him, who would it be? Where do you think we'll be a year from now?

The biggest question is why are we giving up so many leads and how are we gonna stop that. This is something Gordon has to find a solution for. How many points have blown going into the third period with a comfortable lead? Way too many!
If he solves this problem prior to this upcoming season and continues to play the youth like he has (assuming he rejoins KO-JT-MM), then I want to resign him. Continuity is a good thing.

Great point Trotts. I can't remember the number of times we went into the third with a lead and lose. I think Gordon will be back if he can make his system work in the defensive zone. The pressure on the forecheck lead to many goals, but the aggresive style also lead to a ton of odd man rushes for the other team. No excuses, the players are use to the system by now.

Personally, I'd like to see a coach who's has proven NHL success in taking a young club to greater heights. While Gordon may be a good coach for teaching young players, he still needs to coach against the best that's out there, and this is where I think he comes up short. Maybe another year experience will do him good. He's our coach, he'll be there for the start of the season, but if we come out of the gate with our young guys floundering, then I'll be one who will call for a replacement early.

Ask me this question again on Nov 1.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

Has it been the talent the coach has been given or the coach? How many coaches would have done that much better given the state of the franchise? The reason why we couldn't get a proven NHL coach is because no one would work under these circumstances.

I don't like all of Gordon's choices but he's learning as well and I'd like to see how this year goes but still not sure you could expect much more in terms of results with the team thats been fielded the last 2 years.

Also for the record the Isles were 27-3-4 when leading after 2 but were only 3-31-5 when trailing after 2. Clearly I'd like to see a few more comebacks.

I've spewed all my negativity about him.
Won't rehash it.

;)

Then again, if anyone cares to know how I feel about this bastid, you can skim through these 2 threads.
First one was his 1st year here after less than a month of watching him learn on the job while "OVERSPEED" was being force fed down our throats.
2nd link was a few months later.

I knew where you stood, but who are the candidates, if any, to replace him?

The question for me is, who can BUY this franchise and then everything else can fall into place
as HOCKEY decisions will and can be made without any interference.

Don't think much more could have been done, regardless of who the coach would have been. No legit coach in his right mind is coming here anyway, so you can forget that happening. He has a full season under his belt, marginally more talent than before but still no true #1 goalie. Some of the old crud has been scraped off the fisherman's butt, but we still have lingering sh!t stains (Sim, Weight, Gervais) that we didn't upgrade in the off season. Our FA acquisitions? The first one we acquired was after 195 others signed. Nice to have high hopes for who we did pick up but it is highly unlikely they will be franchise turners.

I like Gordon and have been one of his few supporters. Not because I see anything great from him, but he has been asked to make chicken soup out of chicken sh!t. And that has to suck.

He has never given up. In fact, he probably got tougher as the season went on.

I look for him to learn from the past season. Make better personnel moves and lineups and tweak his "system" so it fits the style of this team.

If we do not improve it will most likely be blamed on him, and unfairly so. Think about how frustrated we are with this joke of a franchise. Then put yourself in his shoes. It absolutely positively has to suck.

And I disagree with the thoughts that he was outcoached by anyone last season. He just didn't have the horses when they were needed most.

So, Gordon stays for the season and then he can be judged. Changing now or mid-season only further solifiys this franchise as an unstable mess. He's our coach, like it or not, so I hope he does well.

I dunno....can we judge his reverting to D-men playing back when all logic demanded it and seeing success but then going back to pinch-pinch-pincheroo play where we started losing more? I hope he's not too stubborn to go to what works with the talent he's presented instead of trying to make the Mona Lisa out of a mound of manure.

I'll judge him if he has the wrong guys playing the wrong way. We shall see if Gillies and Konopka are playing like Coffee and Messier (obviously without our team scoring as a result). Judge him every day and base his progress from game one two years ago to game night that night. If we can do better, we damn well should start looking to (if winning matters). If Gorto is the best we can get, fine.

(but don't rule out open coaching tryouts)

"But the Coliseum became a repository for all the team's troubles, a convenient scapegoat. There were suggestions that no major free agent ever would set foot in such a decrepit place. We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann
