Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - The Atlanta Thrashers signed free agent defenseman Freddy Meyer on Thursday.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that it is a one-year, two-way deal that would see the blueliner earn $500,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 at the AHL level.

Last season with the Islanders, he played in a career-high 64 games and totaled four goals and 11 assists.

Over six seasons in the NHL, which include stints with the Flyers and Coyotes, he has posted 19 goals and 52 assists in 266 games.

With all the depth signings, why not sign him too as depth? I suppose the line needs to be drawn somewhere, but he did get credit from Comeau for being a sort of nutritionist that helped him eat healthier and get stronger.

I thought this was DP's role?

Wow, I now know how much this franchise has sunk when people are questioning signing a defenseman who wouldn't make any decent NHL team.

Seller's remorse

Technically we didn't get anything for him, but I can't think of a snappy phrase...

Big deal. This is one of the marginal players we've had (and about a thousand others) and we are so programmed now to say "wtf are we doing, etc". This will have no impact on us whatsoever. Thanks Freddy. Some games u were great, most games u weren't.
This opens up time for the guys we have. And may even signal a surprise out of camp keeping Brutal on the pine. Like someone else said- heks a 3rd liner at best on any othr team in the NHL.

I wonder if Bruno will ever ride the pine. Meyer is much better than he ever was and was shown the door, but Bruno who was a - 5,000 for the season and was on the ice for ALMOST ALL of the 3rd period collapses continues to get a free ride.

I started a poll last year asking if he was the worst d-man in team history. I still stand by that and if I recall about 45% of the others agreed.

I'd let him play at the bridge and come up when the team gets their obligatory 4-5 serious injuries to the D.
