Keep your Koolaid, keep your fear of anything "negative".
This franchise needs to add quality, not open the bank, but at least spend something.
Instead it's the same old damage control. Read this rubbish.

Perhaps the most glaring need  for the Islanders as the first day of free agency arrives? A big, crease-clearing defenseman to bolster the back end.

So after adding some offensive prospects through last weekend's draft, the Islanders will keep their blue line in mind once the NHL's crop of free agents tests the market Thursday.

"I think our team would benefit from an upgrade in certain positions. That position - a defenseman - is one we'll take a good look at," general manager Garth Snow said. "In a perfect world we'd get some size and a defenseman that can move the puck. That would be a big boost to our lineup."

But the Islanders will be among the many teams looking to improve their defensive corps in a year in which the market is thin.

"I don't think it's as deep as it has been in the past," Snow said. "I think it's more of a reflection with how the [collective-bargaining agreement] is working right now. You have young players coming out of their entry-level deals getting long-term contracts. Because these quality players are getting long-term deals at a younger age, you're not seeing as many of the high-end players hitting the free-agent market."

With a dearth of skilled defenseman beyond the top-tier guys - Paul Martin, Dan Hamhuis, Anton Volchenkov, Zbynek Michalek and Sergei Gonchar - the Islanders will be competing with virtually every other team in the league to land one of the elite talents.

And while the Islanders haven't emptied their pockets by making any splashy signings in recent years, they have shelled out significant sums to players they deemed worthy of multiyear deals.

Last July 1, the Islanders signed goaltender Dwayne Roloson to a two-year, $5-million deal; in the summer of 2008 they signed defenseman Mark Streit to a five-year contract worth $20.5 million.

Any speculation that Snow is under strict budgetary constraints, he said, is "not true. I've had the opportunity to add players who I think will add to the team's success in the short term and the long term and I've never had restrictions on that when it comes to improving this team."

However, Snow has proved adept at sniffing out some good bargains. Last July he signed unrestricted free agent Matt Moulson to a one-year deal worth $575,000. Moulson went on to become the team's leading goal-scorer, with 30 and 18 assists.

So if the Islanders don't land one of the more coveted players, don't be surprised to see Snow find some hidden gems.

"I think we've had a lot of success in [free agency] the past few years, Mark Streit, Matt Moulson, our goalies from a year ago ," Snow said. "We'll look for that same success."

ONCE again. Pointing to Streit, Moulson as examples and the Rolo signing used to show they "spend"???

Get the flock outta here ya bastids. Stop insulting our intelligence.
Good grief. This team is in financial turmoil. Everyone knows it and the rest are in denial.
He's "had" opportunities? Oogats. I am 99% certain that this article was designed to front some damage control while the second wave will come from some in the blogging community.
How about spending on some defensemen like Kurtis Foster and Paul Mara, won't cost much. Or, how about spending just a little more than anyone else on Zbynek Michalek, who's probably worth it??? On offense, can you please bring in someone who HASN'T played in NY before? Tired of the articles on local boys like Higgins or bringing back that goober from Philly.
How about surrounding our kids with TOUGH hard nosed players who will teach Okposo how to stand up for his teamates so he can one day EARN the "C". There is so much to write but I'd rather hear everyone's response and feelings on this recent article by Strang.

If that is indeed true Mr. Snow, then you absolutely suck as a GM.
I also think its funny/ironic/sad that Snow says the defenseman list is thin, yet the article lists a slew of them who are available.

I don't at all buy the garbage Snow says that he's under no budgetary constraints. That's just company line BS.

Garth Snow had a terrific 2010 draft. I absolutely loved what the team did.
But we said all along, that this years free agency was going to be the TRUE test
of this OWNERS true intentions. This isn't about Snow's capabilities as a GM as it is
the limits set upon him.

Dominic Moore is out there. great faceoff guy, penalty killer, student of the game and terrific teamate. He'd fit in well as a 4th liner. But wouldn't it also be great to see us land one of the top defensive free agents? Volchenkov or Martin? If not, how about Michalek who's a great shot blocker and steady all around defenseman?

Instead we have to read more bargain hunting bullcrap and excuses.

Shove that LIGHTHOUSE straight...

I'm begging Katie Strang to have some courage and call out these guys when they give the song and dance. Is she scared that she'll get booted out of the loop like CB was for that one time?

I'm the first one to start rolling my eyes when I see people here go negative right away but in this case it's warranted.

YOU need to be in the Blog Box to balance the others.

It's the same old story every year. And when he does sign a little known guy for 500K we'll hear about how shrewd Garth is. The next two days will tell if he's restricted in his spending or restricted in his talents to land a big fish. We'll hear it's the buildings fault again, or that he made a play but didn't feel that player was worth what another team paid, any excuse, but results will be the same, no big gun, no weakness address via free agency.

Again, when the building is used as an issue, and the usualy bs is sent out from Garth, why doesnt one reporter as why Smith/Nolan were able to do it in 2006, before we had this "crazy bright future" ahead of us.

Hockey news believes we'll finish 14th in east.

14 NEW YORK ISLANDERS
Why: When your highest paid player is playing in the Kontinental League, you know your team isn’t a Stanley Cup contender. Alexei Yashin will make $4.75 million against the salary cap in 2010-11 and Rick DiPietro, who played only eight games last season, weighs in at $4.5 million. John Tavares, Josh Bailey, Kyle Okposo and the rest of the kids will take another step forward, but there are still too many holes in the depth chart for the whole team to take a leap.

I don't think we'll finish that low but wouldn't be surprised because many of the teams in the east have upgraded themselves while we wait for "Mr. August".

I don't think we'll finish that low but wouldn't be surprised because many of the teams in the east have upgraded themselves while we wait for "Mr. August".

We have a new goon....he's been growing a Foo Man Chu in preparation for camp (and marketing). Don't forget #27 as well. And Eaton is, well, a defenseman.

I predict 12th in the east only because our goalie will get injured and our backup won't be able to come off the banch for more than 6 games. Lawson might surprise us, or Koskinen might as well be able to steal time in the bigs when we need a backup for Rick to actually be able to play on a given night?

I hope Moulson can show the same as last year.......or Gorton gets canned if several underwhelm.

Tavares will show a lot more, as will Okposo. Bailey might pull a Lauer and become a solid 2 way guy with some scoring punch (but not nearly what we anticipated).
"clearly it's Rick DiPietro's stupidity that's put the islanders in this situation getting into an altercation when a game was over..." Keith Jones on VS

"But the Coliseum became a repository for all the team's troubles, a convenient scapegoat. There were suggestions that no major free agent ever would set foot in such a decrepit place. We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann

I am expecting big things from the isles this year. Yes, the Islanders are making the playoffs in 2010-2011. I stand by my guarantee. Its a shame I won't be around to enjoy it. Have to watch them at home. But, its a sacrifice, I'm willing to make.

At this point, August 17th, every team in the NHL is tied at 0-0. We haven't played a game yet. Or stepped on the ice in camp yet.

Already we have bashed the GM, coach, FA signings, re-sigings, the building we play in, where we're having camp, how much parking costs, the schedule, the new third jersey, the Lighthouse project, the owner, Strang, the dismissal of front office personnel, the pre-season schedule, the cost of beer and cupcakes, DP, Witt, Bruno, the draft selections, bloggers, the release of Jaffe, yada, yada, yada.

And it's August 17th.

We used to have hope. Maybe even unrealistic expectations. Dreams of the playoffs.

But not anymore.

Just goes to show how low this organization has sunk.

Is there a savior on the horizon before we fade from obscurity to irrelevance? Maybe we're already irrelevant, I'm not sure.

But I'm gonna wait until the games actually start. Or at least another 26 days, 55 minutes and 40 seconds.

This should be one hell of a season.

We're just getting it out of the way because when the season starts, we'll ride the love train all the way to the Cup.

:P

This is technically year 4 of the rebuild while we're being told it's year 3.
Each year we have to toss around theories of best case scenarios for our Isles to do well or at best improve.

This year, should be the year that money was spent. Not to "sprinkle in" some eh so what free agents, but IMPACT players. Outside of a trade for Wisnewski, this team on paper is no better while the rest of the east improved.

Of course the game is played on the ice but if all our GM can do is echo the owners sell-em-hope initiative, then we deserve to have our "beat writer" release little tidbits about DiPietro "skating" again while some jump to conclusions that THIS is the year he finally will lead. If not, no worries, we're deep. If not, no worries, it's a rebuild, just wait till next year. There's always hope.

Damn, I was optimistic until I read that review of the past couple of months. :o

Rifle, I hope we come out of the blocks winning and have a great season because it's the only way all those things you reminded us that pains us will lose some relevance. But as long as we experience failure as a team, there will be a long list of things to point at as the reasons.
