Why don't they just reinstate the entire lineup from the last two pathetic years? Veterans? How about has beens? Both Weight and Guerin would be laughed out of every other frnachise in the league. Sim, Park and Hilbert (maybe) too.
Would anyone be upset if we:
A. Didn't sign Weight, Sim, Hilbert and possibly Park? B. Filled the roster with the best performing talent out of camp, whoever that is, including Nino, Kirill, Harmonic, DeHaan whoever. C. Sent those that don't perform well in camp to the Bridge or on the bus out of town. Again, WHOEVER- Bruno, Sim, Weight etc. etc. D. We go into the season with a young hungry team. We do not have a great season, but at least we take a step to building for the future.
I'd sign up for that right now.
Instead of running on ice like we have been for the past 5 years.
Geez, WTF is the plan? Revisionist history?
rifle, I vent about the same things but realistically, we need veterans to help lead these guys on and of the ice to help expedite the rebuild. There is alot to be said about character. Character can be built through leadership from talented veteran players who can lead by example. I like Weight but at this injury plagued stage of his career, he helps more with the guys OFF the ice. That's fine. Guerin is someone I never wanted to be jettisoned but our coach didn't agree with his views and I would be shocked if he was brought back. The free agent defensemen and Wisnewski who were brought in will not collectiveley provide more eadership. If anything they may provide confidence (should they fit in). We are still grossly lacking in the leadership category and this is why guys like Okposo have not taken that next step. Go back and watch many Isles games from last year. While we can get giddy at some of the moves and goals he's scored, I cannot believe many fail to see the many opportunities where he's ignored his linemates on the ice who were in a better position to score. THAT is where veteran leadership comes in to help point things out. That and doing it themselves on the ice. I expect another non playoff year unless "Mr. August" pulls a rabbit out of the hat this weekend.
But he's OOOLLLLLDDDDDDD! We have Hilbert to lead now.
And yes, Okposo has gone from Iginla tough hopefully to Islander soft and countless times I wondered if he would ever play a physical game or even get his own game together. I would welcome Guerin back any time. I'd prefer someone better of course, but 'it's the building' (that signed Hilbert and Sim).

I tink thats the only thing (besides Weight returning) that is keeping Okposo from getting the C...his failure to stand up for teammates.

That's a very big thing. Inside fortitude and responsibility. I like a captain who leaves it ALL out there.
Not to say he won't, eventually, grow into it, but this is a Clarion call for veteran leadership given the attitude of some. I wish we could just sign Yzerman for a year or two.

I have to agree wth you there.
But... Cue someone to say "but it's not his job to fight and stand up for teammates..."
That is a huge issue I have with this team and how they're coached by imbecillucus maximus. Yeah, not Kyle Okposo's job to fight. Not at all.
BUT, countless times he's been in the vicinity of a teammate getting cheap shotted, or pushed around and he's done nothing.
Just takes 1 time and not just him. I always say, it's a pack mentality. Stand up for each other. Not just Kyle's job, all of them and if anyone thinks that they know hockey because they'll likely respond, "but we now got Gillies and Konopka"...that alone is not a deterrent my friends.
Those players will not be on a line with Kyle. Pay attention. IF Kyle Okposo and others stood up for themselves/each other once in a while....THEN having guys like Konopka/Gillies would work out when they do choose to fight.
If they don't, they'll never create as much ice for themselves as they could. Even Mike Bossy once said enough is enough and went back at Jerry Korab before teammates could come in. It's all about confidence and a sense of security.

I thought this was a Guerin thread? But since it was brought up- KO will be fine. He'll stand up for himself and others and will learn to make the pass he should malke, all while netting 25 a season. He is young and needs to grow up while improving his game. We should be glad we have him. Now on Guerin- I know I've been critical of things, but you have to take a side at some point. Either you want vets to help the progress of young players or you want a young team and are willing to deal with growing pains. Some posters here simply bash every player we have. It makes it difficult to respect their opinions when they seem to only follow the current buzz. Just my opinion.
