Hey..just read a terrific article from BD Gallof @ islesindependent

I suggest every die hard Isles fan read this.

EXCLUSIVE: Town Of Hempstead Reaction To Casino

BDGallof | Apr 28, 2010 | Comments 2

I tracked down a ToH source who would give me a straight answer about yesterday’s Nassau County bombshell which ended up on the front page of Newsday.

Source: “No conspiracy here, BD. She found out same as you did. She was caught off-guard.”

Was she pissed? After all, the Town of Hempstead put a lot out there that they are “taking the reins” here, with a Memorial Day deadline for the results of the FP Clark study. Doesn’t this put that off?

Source: Kate really doesn’t get pissed. Let’s say SURPRISED. She was surprised by it. However, we are continuing with our plan here. She tactfully responded when asked about it in the news, but we are going forward with our plans.

With a casino possibly added to the mix, are you concerned about traffic? Traffic was a big issue at the hearing by the town board back in August. Wouldn’t there be more traffic with a casino.

Source: Yes. Issue of traffic will not change. It still is at issue and they would still need to address the traffic no matter who it was.

Where do you think Charles Wang and Scott Rechler stand in all of this? I have heard they are upset.

Source: The day after election day we never heard from Charles again. I mean, just because Suozzi is out of office doesn’t mean it all just ends, right? What kind of deal is that? Where have these guys been? They haven’t called Mangano back. They have taken down the website now. Charles has really caused his own problems with Mangano with his antics.

Mangano offering land to the Shinnecock nation, or even entertaining the idea seems very curious when Rechler/Wang had a lease deal with Suozzi. Is this the bigger message here?

Source: Listen, that sweetheart deal just isn’t happening. That deal helps nobody locally except Charles Wang. Mangano is sitting staring at a $300 million debt for the county.

So, for arguments sake, lets say you guys come out with your scaled down version, and Charles says: Hell, ok…I’ll build that. You mean…

Source: Mangano will be changing that lease deal. No way that happens

So, in the end will something be done for NY Islander fans?

Source: Yes. Kate isn’t going to let her legacy be nothing was done while on her watch. We are focusing on finishing with FP Clark and continuing on our path.

Do you think the casino will happen? My take on it was very negative.

Source: Well, it’s not very likely. We understand that Mangano is trying to make this a productive conversation and come up with ways to get the county out of debt. But, doesn’t seem likely

And once again, I say Murray (Ms.Piggy) will end up the only one here doing the fans and team and residents any service that is not for personal gain. Maybe for posterity or vanity, but not for gain. She'll be hated until it gets done. Then forgotten.
"clearly it's Rick DiPietro's stupidity that's put the islanders in this situation getting into an altercation when a game was over..." Keith Jones on VS

"But the Coliseum became a repository for all the team's troubles, a convenient scapegoat. There were suggestions that no major free agent ever would set foot in such a decrepit place. We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann

Steve, I fall into that category.  We are not talking about a residential area of Nassau. It's highly commercial, and if they work out a deal that the surrounding school districts get revenue that would offset prop taxes by 50% to the homeowners, that would settle alot of concerns.    If this was an area south of Hemp Tkpe then you'd be in someone's back yard, but this is an area of Roosevelt field, 77 acres of asphalt with the NVMC/Marriot, Hofstra, Eisenhower park, Hemp Tpke, the Source and Stewart ave/Old Country rd mega retail district.  If there were any place for Nassau to have a Casino other than Belmont, this would be the best local.

That said, if they thought that traffic would be a problem with Wangri la, I'd say there would be at least twice the traffic including volumes of bus service to the 'cockswoods Resort - Casino - Arena.

Nick, totally get it. But Hofstra is right there for starters. Part of me would be a little concerned about my child going to college near a casino.
As for the towns neighboring this, the traffic will absolutely affect them.
I think there's alot more we need to find out about this. I don't now about offsetting property taxes that high. 50%? Crap, I'm moving there dangit.

I know one thing. There is alot of hypocrisy by many who oppose this right now.
Alot of people are freaking out saying that drugs and prostitution will follow if a Casino comes to Nassau. I have news for everyone, it's already there.
There debauchery in our schools out in Smithtown, St. James, Pat-Med etc. There's friggen heroin being used by High Schoolers and there's an out of control drinking and driving russian roulette game being played daily and I haven't touched on the gang nonsense.

Nick, to most, no place sounds like a perfect spot for this. But while I can see why that could be,
I also know many people would oppose it if it was being built in their back yard. I know I would even though there's enough other stuff, far worse to concern myself with than this. Hope that makes sense.

Steve,

You are right that it (drugs, prostitution & crime) is already there, but as someone who taught at Vernon-Verona-High School which is directly across the street from Turning Stone Casino and watched it grow from essentially a bingo-hall trailer to this...

http://www.appleroofing.com/casinolg.jpg

to this...

http://www.northeast-fiber-optic-conferenc...rning-stone.jpg

it has brought in a great deal more drugs and prostitution to the area. A very good friend of mine was the supt. of Oneida Public Schools and then became supt. of Cold Spring Harbor schools. We would often talk about the issues the casino brought to the area.

That said, I don't live in Nassau Co or even NYS for that matter any more so this really isn't my call. It would make it easier to go to a casino whenever I come home to see my dad or brother. I probably went to Turning Stone once every 3 months for the 9 years I lived up in that area. (WFT else is there to do near Utica?) I loved going, but I know it didn't help the area schools with taxes. In fact, it hurt when the Oneidas purchased local land and claimed it as part of the reservation and it came off the tax rolls.

jmho, but if it somehow comes that the land is considered "reservation" land, doesn't that mean it is no longer Nassau County's land or TOH land or NYS land? It would be part of a sovereign nation. That also leads to all sorts of problems. They'd have their own police force and there is nothing like watching NYS Troopers clash with the "Indian cops".

With all the entities involved- TOH, Nassau, "the nation", federal and state govt I can't imagine how it would work out.

The point is he is a kid.
not an adult.
that's all.

but sure... just because a kid ends up on TV for a night - he's a celebrity and that makes it fine.

whatever.

Were you that upset when SNL did the skit on Rudy Guliani and his son acting like an ass when Rudy was being sworn in? I thought Farley was hystical as little Guliani.

If people don't want their kids to be part of these things, don't drag them into the public for something they have no reason to be in.

Now, what is done with the image of a kid is another thing. I see no harm in what Steve did with the younger Wang. I certainly don't think anything was inappropriate or meanspirited, but that is jmho.

you talking about the NHL draft last season?? I had an amazing time..lol...Wasn't that little boy Charles Wang's Grandson or something like that?? I thought that was cool as hell of Charles to have his kid or grandkid being used as a runner..Alot of the teams had young children on the floor of the Bell Centre as runners..

I thought the pic was funny, but to compare the Wanger, who is a public figure and fair game to ridicule, with his grandson or son is ridiculous. He should not be held to the same standard as his grandfather(or father) when it comes time to public satire. He is just a kid. I cant imagine he would take that pic in gest if he ever saw it. But considering what this board thinks of his patriarch I doubt he would ever log onto this site anyway. No harm no foul IMO, but I would hate it if it happened to my kid.

it's a pathetic idea.
Hopefully, it's just a ploy by Mangano to put a fire under Kate's butt.

And PS:  look back, the LHP was a 10 year buildout with the coliseum being the first to be built.

certainly there is room to scale it back, but not by half if that is what murray is looking for.

and steve... I have a problem with you putting Charles' son in the photoshop version.  I remember you not wanting me to take a photo of your son when we were ice skating just for this reason.  I guess you forgot about that.

Charles paraded his son onto the platform on draft day and he gladly posed for that public photo.

When I ran into you and "~me" at the Rinx that day, I asked that you not take photo's of me and my son.

What's the point again?

Can we have a poll, if the majority find it in poor taste which is probably true, I'll gladly take it down.

Depot.....I for one thought it was awesome. Leave it up LOL.

well, here's the reality of the situation -- would you rather kick away a couple of hundred dollars a night watching Wang's version of NHL hockey or take a chance with that money on the slot machines? :dontknow:

Is the premier game now showing up in the casinos, and that's where I place my money. Not to be confused with Texas hold'em or Texas hold'em bonus. A table game vs. the dealer with odds and an optional bonus bet. 50/50 game with the potential of some big payouts.

I'm going to be doing some extensive research from Sunday thru Thursday in Vegas to the already extensive research I've conducted over the last year.

Hey all, sorry I've not been around (I know you all miss my complaining about the Islanders uniforms), I've been busy feeling sorry for myself and trying to find a job. I tuned in recently to learn that now they're trying to build a casino with/without the Lighthouse and I just HAD to pop in here and say hello. And of course bask in the total confusion that is Nassau County/New York Islanders with a sarcastic sense of humor. What better place to do that than NYIC!?

Hope everyone's doing well!!

In today's Newsday they had another article. Now the traffic situation is being questioned
as the saga continues.

I was hoping this would be an upbeat off-season filled with promise instead of more
questions and red tape. Luckily the NHL playoffs have been a great distraction.

This franchise has a rich history and a deep seeded loyal fanbase that prides
itself on certain club achievements have rarely if ever been rivaled in pro sports.

But thanks to the off ice circus with Hempstead politics and the ulterior motives of
our owner coming to fruition we've been saddled with unnecessary drama.
Being an Islanders fan shouldn't be filled with this much stress.
