Guerin's deal has a no-movement clause in it.. So he would have to waive his NTC to be eventually traded.

Reasons this is a great signing

1 - Gives credability to the franchise
2 - Tough, Can Score, Leader
3 - Trade Bait at the deadline if we aren't in the playoff race
4 - Flexability, only 2 years.

WOOOO

How's it going Islander Country, I've been reading posts for months now and I've decided to pop my cherry with an acutal reply.

Good signing, but take a look at what we offered for Guerin to STL during the dealine; then look at what STL rejected us for from SJ!!!!

Isles offer: 1st Round pick, O'Marra, Nillson

SJ offer: 1st Round Pick, Ville Nieminen, Jay Barriball

So basically STL accepted a 1st round pick from a team higher in the standings, a 3rd/4th line winger, and a guy drafted in the 7th round in 2006 (203 overall).

All this tells me is that Nillson and O'marra must be considered duds by the NHL.

btw, Eklund got this right, I know how much you love to bash him, but give him some credit

cherry has been popped

He got it from Andy Strickland though...

Excellent signing by Garth. Looks like we have a new captain. Now he must follow up by getting a top two d-man, which is much more important than getting Comrie.

I would hate to see Guerin be given the C. I'd like to see Witt get it since he's a Nolan guy and will be here for years. I could see Guerin being traded at the deadline this year. He's 37 and won't be here a long time.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a C long term.

That said, I'm happy to have Guerin in the mix. He looked done 2 years ago but had a nice rebound season this year and I hope he'll get another 30+ this year.

Good work Garth. Keep bringing in quality guys like this to fill those top 2 lines.

Do you have a source on that? I haven't seen it anywhere yet (No movement).

Not that I mind.

he wont do it this year, but if he is still around and healthy next year, I am sure he wouldnt mind going to a contender in what could be the end of his career

This may sound dumb... but A guy like Guerin commands respect from the referees too... maybe we'll be on the better end of some calls this year.

BREAKING NEWS: Bill Guerin an Islander Jul 5, 2007, 6:18 PM EDT Snow signs 36-goal scorer, 4-time NHL All-Star and 3-time United States Olympian to two-year pact

The Islanders have signed four-time NHL all-star and three-time United States Olympian Bill Guerin to a two-year contract. The 36-year old Guerin is coming off a 36-goal season with St. Louis and San Jose and has 364 goals and 355 assists for 719 points in 1,026 career NHL games.

"My family and I are so happy to be coming to Long Island," said Guerin. "Garth Snow first contacted me on Sunday and was so positive, so persistent right from the outset explaining to me why I would be ideal for his team. Ownership's commitment to winning at almost every cost and Garth making it clear to how determined he is to build a winner is why I'm an Islander today."

Said Snow: "Bill Guerin, by everyone's account, is the consummate professional, the ultimate teammate. And beyond that, he's an outstanding hockey player coming off a 36-goal season. The Islanders are extremely proud that Bill has made the decision to come to Long Island."

Guerin has played on the United States Olympic Team in 1998, 2002 and 2006 and in the NHL All-Star Game in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007.

Stay tuned to newyorkislanders.com and ISLANDERS TV for more on the arrival of Bill Guerin to Long Island and potential additional news out of Islanders Country today and beyond.

looks like damage control to me.seems like garth trying to save face.

Not an isles fan....

Hey, I'll personally vouch for Whiplash's loyalty, dedication and presence around the coliseum. I'd listen to what he says.

This is a good signing for the Islanders. One side of me thinks the pressure from us and the press forced Snow to put this together to appease the criticism. We've heard so much double talk from them and with each turn we've bashed the organization and each day they take a different direction. First it was for UFA big names, then we need patience, then we have a plan to build not with big names but the right players, and today we sign a big name UFA.

Dont get me wrong, I like the signing and I like the idea it's only 2 years, 1 would've been ok in my books. He's a hard working tough North American and will be good for Hunter and some of the younger players.

But do not make him the Captain. You already know he's a temp stop gap at 36 and only 2 years signed for. I want a Captain who will take pride that it's HIS team and one that he'll Captain for a while, that will be there through the entire trip back to the top of the NHL. I dont want a captain because he's our top priced players UFA signed to right the ship.

Brendan Witt or Trent Hunter for Captain.
I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

Guerin is what I hope Hunter will become in time. Just a great signing, a nice roll model for Hunter and other emerging Isles.

Very nice they got him for 2 years, there's not really any committment here, and he's got a lot of friends in the league, hopefully a gateway to bringing aboard some of his friends if the opportunity presents itself.

Very nice.
