Logan's take--supposedly Guerin and Comrie are a package deal---read on.

Quote:

The Islanders took a major step toward recovering from their losses in the free agent market this afternoon when they signed right wing Bill Guerin to a two-year deal worth $9 million that includes a $2 million signing bonus in the first year, according to an NHL source. If Guerin is in the fold, then, center Mike Comrie might not be far behind.

The two free agents spent part of the day talking to each other about the prospect of joining the Islanders together to make sure they are coming to a team that can remain competitive for a playoff spot. Guerin previously told the Islanders he wouldn’t come unless they could add offensive help. Comrie had the same reservations. In essence they could sign almost as a package deal.

Earlier today, Comrie’s Edmonton-based agent, Ritch Winter, said the two players “are talking about things like what they need to do to help these guys [the Islanders]…Mike has been buoyed up by their commitment to go out and get guys.”

After learning of the Guerin signing, Winter said he expected negotiations for Comrie to continue tonight. Comrie is prepared to accept a one-year contract, Winter said, “for the opportunity to establish himself as a first-line center.” Landing Guerin, he added, makes it a more attractive destination for Comrie because “he would have a 35-goal scorer on the wing to pass the puck to.”

The 36-year-old Guerin had 36 goals and 56 points last season while playing for St. Louis and San Jose. As one Western Conference personnel expert said, “He proved he had a lot left.”

If Comrie joins the Islanders, he might center a top line with free-agent wingers Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko, though veteran Miroslav Satan also could be in that mix. Should Comrie sign by Friday, he might have company. Although the Isles have shown some interest in free-agent defenseman Sheldon Souray and his 26-goal slapshot, they are more focused on adding a defensive stalwart. Detroit free agent Danny Markov might be the leading candidate along with Nashville’s Vitaly Vishnevski and Colorado’s Ossi Vaananen.

Well if you want Hunter to become more like Guerin he's going to watch him up close and personal. Maybe it will lead to Trent having a breakout year.

if we would have signed "some" of the team that we let go I'd be jumping for joy too by adding guerin.i think at this point it dont matter which of the remaining free agents we sign.signing theese players just to trade at the deadline dont make me want to run out and buy tickets.Garth is going to have to do alot better than that just to compete in our division, nevermind the conference.im still not convinced this just isn't damage control.theres alot of pressure on snow and he's under the microscope after 7/1.

Just thought of this: If Guerin plays out his contract, then next summer we have someone who can call UFA's ala Sakic and make a pitch to come to LI. Like some others have said, he brings some credibility along with what he does on the ice.

BREAKING NEWS: Bill Guerin an Islander Jul 5, 2007, 6:18 PM EDT Snow signs 36-goal scorer, 4-time NHL All-Star and 3-time United States Olympian to two-year pact

The Islanders have signed four-time NHL all-star and three-time United States Olympian Bill Guerin to a two-year contract. The 36-year old Guerin is coming off a 36-goal season with St. Louis and San Jose and has 364 goals and 355 assists for 719 points in 1,026 career NHL games.

"My family and I are so happy to be coming to Long Island," said Guerin. "Garth Snow first contacted me on Sunday and was so positive, so persistent right from the outset explaining to me why I would be ideal for his team. Ownership's commitment to winning at almost every cost and Garth making it clear to how determined he is to build a winner is why I'm an Islander today."

Said Snow: "Bill Guerin, by everyone's account, is the consummate professional, the ultimate teammate. And beyond that, he's an outstanding hockey player coming off a 36-goal season. The Islanders are extremely proud that Bill has made the decision to come to Long Island."

Guerin has played on the United States Olympic Team in 1998, 2002 and 2006 and in the NHL All-Star Game in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007.

Stay tuned to newyorkislanders.com and ISLANDERS TV for more on the arrival of Bill Guerin to Long Island and potential additional news out of Islanders Country today and beyond.

"the arrival of Bill Guerin", Jesus Christ lets not make a big deal out of this like we did with Smyth, when we had f#@king TV camers at the airport

Guerin is a past his prime player, he will not turn this team around and will not lead us to the promised land, he is here to fill the roster and make the minumum salary cap(and maybe be a trade bait at the deadline), lets not make a big deal out of this, a Press Conference is not needed, no one really cares why Guerin is here, and by Guerin saying he is here because he "sees Garths determination to winning", we all know that is a lie, there is a 50% chance he wont be here at the end of this year and a 75% percent chance he wont be here at the end of next, please Islanders dont embarass me any further and make a big deal out of this

I bet you think this was a great move and will bring the Islanders closer to the 6th playoff spot, you also probably thought the Smyth trade was a great trade and like Snow would do it all over again

I'm the guy who's forced to read your uneducated comments about Garth and the team.

You may have webby to "vouche" for you as an isles fan but your words ring hollow to me...

Apparently you know better than the rest of us that these moves are "pressure" moves and that these guys will just be traded at the end (although he has a NTC). You have no idea what you are talking about and I'm sick of the naysaying...You're a debbie downer and at this moment there is no need for it

If Dipietro does not get hurt in Montreal... that Smyth trade could have been Perfect. We rolled the dice and got burned. Weren't you happy to see Wang make a statement that we are for real.. no longer the perennial sellers at the deadline or the year we got crazy an added steve webb at the deadline.
