On 20th birthday, John Tavares reflects on rookie year and upcoming season

11:38 AM By Katie Strang

Hard to believe that John Tavares is only 20 years old since he carries himself as a seasoned veteran already, but last year's No. 1 overall pick says goodbye to his teens today and hello to another training camp and his sophomore season ahead.

With 24 goals and 54 points total, Tavares had an impressive rookie campaign, finishing second behind Colorado's Matt Duchene. But even with a year under his belt, Tavares said he is experiencing some of the same nerves and excitement as last September.

"I still have  a lot of those same feelings, but this year I just know how to handle him. I've had them before."

Tavares, who credits his family and teammates for all the support he received in the past 12 months, said he expects the learning curve to be different this year.

"The thing about doing well, when you succeed you learn what works for you and what doesn't.'

Which isn't to say he still has completely shed all signs of growing pains. Tavares said coach Scott Gordon teased him on the ice this morning after a drill that he flubbed twice.

"It was on the forecheck. I was supposed to lock left and I knew that buy I locked right instead--twice. We had a laugh about that."

Beyond the time he put in this summer on the ice working with skating coach Dawn Braid, Tavares pushed hard off the ice with trainer Richard Clark.

Coincidentally, I heard from Clark this morning who said, 'John left for camp a week ago in the best shape of his life and stronger/more explosive than ever."

Handle HIM???? Does this have anything to do with that Cinderella Prince Charming nonsense Katie was using last year to describe Moulson and Tavares???

I like that quote. I'm really looking forward to watching him this year, as I'm sure everyone else is.

What I want to see this year is some consistency. No 35 game slumps in the middle of the season if we want any chance at the playoffs. That may be a lot of pressure to put on a 20 year old but since our cheap and brainless front office didn't add any veteran offense the kids are gonna have to take on more than they should have to at this stage.

tavares has no pressure...just go out and win a stanley cup for the islanders. how difficult can that be for a 20yr old phenonomen?

Don't forget to get a new Coliseum to save the team, Resolve all traffic congestion on the Island and establish a new NHL commissioner with a new CBA signed by 2012

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- John Tavares celebrated his 20th birthday Monday.

Anybody looking to get something for the top pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft might think about a recipe book.

As much as he wanted to live again this season with New York Islanders captain Doug Weight and his family, it's not going to work out for Tavares as the new Weight digs don't have room for him. Instead, Tavares will live in his own apartment with teammate and friend Matt Moulson across the hall and some other Islanders teammates in the same complex.

While being out on their own and in their own place might be a dream for a lot of young men of Tavares' age, he was actually looking forward to being an extension of the Weight family again.

"It's too bad because that was perfect for me," Tavares said of living with the Weights last season. "That's what I was shooting for this season. I've lived away from home a lot and it has been with billets. It's nice to have that family atmosphere being away from home, but there's no guest house this year."

Tavares said he was looking forward to spending more time around Weight, who is back with the Islanders after signing a one-year deal for $850,000.

When told Tavares was disappointed, Weight said: "I am, too. We looked and looked, but we just couldn't find something to accommodate him. He'll be welcome whenever he wants and we'll have a room for him. He's probably going to miss my kids and my wife more than he'll miss me. I'm sad it didn't work out."

With Tavares, Weight returned a gesture he appreciated when he was a young player with the Edmonton Oilers and had Kelly Buchberger take him into his home.

Tavares seems like a sharp kid, recognizing -- unlike some of his peers -- that he doesn't have it all figured out yet and there are actually people from whom he can learn.

It started with his parents. He also learned about work ethic and establishing relationships with teammates from watching his uncle, lacrosse legend John Tavares, when he hung around with the star of the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League.

"He was always telling me about being an unselfish player. I saw how hard he worked and how he involved his teammates. Even though he was the best player, I saw the work ethic and how he involved his teammates both in practice and in the dressing room," said Tavares, who spent part of the summer watching his uncle on another successful run to the Mann Cup (his seventh) with the Peterborough Lakers.

Tavares was doing the same thing in his time with Weight last season. Watching, learning.

"I was learning from him how to handle yourself away from the rink. He's a leader and the captain and how he handled things both at the rink and away from the rink would have a huge impact on me in the future," Tavares said.

So, now he'll be 20 and on his own.

Can he cook?

"I cook quite a bit," Tavares said. "I enjoy it."

Does he have a specialty?

"I eat eggs every day, so I'm pretty good at scrambling eggs. I can do steak, chicken and a little bit of fish. My recipes are expanding. I haven't had any disasters yet. If I get stuck, I just call my mom for advice."

When told about Tavares' cooking skills, Weight smiled.

"I know he can eat. That's what he can do. I remember that 20-year-old appetite I had."

Let's hope he has a Stamkos type season. Look, this kid wants to do well so badly he'll put the time in and we will see improvement from him. I don't expect him to carry the team as that might be a bit much at his age.

But he will contribute and we will be glad he's an Islander.

18 days, I cannot wait.

Are you ready for some HOCKEY??????

The best thing about Tavares is his demeanor. Always seems focused on the big picture.
I have no doubt that this kid will one day be one of those playoff performers that sacrifices himself to make a big play.

I don't see him having a Stamkos year. Better year perhaps and more consistent. Just worried about the teams overall commitment to standing up for each other no matter who's on the ice.

Hopefully it changes. We cannot afford injuries and setbacks in development to our youthful core.

I agree he'll have a great year, but not like Stamkos, mainly because the supporting cast that Stamkos had in TB had much more offensive talent.

This is why I see the Gillies/Konopzk/toughness additions as important. We needed them last year. The childrens needed it. To go out and know someone has your back is vital. Yes, a few toughies on one line doesn't shield Tavares but two of the right toughies well liked by teammates who will take the challenge when th time comes spreads. I'd bet even Bruno Mohawk will even fight (if he gets NHL time).

Who says our talent isn't offensive? Some of our guys have been downright offensive. :angrier:
