Weight Returns to Islanders

The New York Islanders will likely make some changes this offseason, but one thing will remain the same. Captain Doug Weight will return for a 19th season and third with the Isles.

The center confirmed on Tuesday that he had reached agreement with the team but said in a text message to ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun that details of the contract were still being finalized. Islanders general manager Garth Snow confirmed the agreement.

Battling shoulder injuries last season, Weight had one goal and 16 assists in 36 games.

The four-time All-Star has 276 goals and 748 assists in his career with the Rangers, Oilers, Blues, Hurricanes, Ducks and Islanders. He will turn 40 in January of next season.

The Isles went 34-37-11 last season and missed the playoffs. That was an improvement over the 26-47-9 totals from the year before. New York has not made the playoffs since 2006-07.

Pierre LeBrun covers the NHL for ESPN.com.

:dontknow:

I like Weight. I hope his shoulder has healed. But unless Wang decides to get serious about building a legit hockey team, it means nothing.

Hopefully he can influence some of his pals to come down to the Island.

I don't like it at all. it is time to realize that we need CHANGE here. Not he same old same old. And in this case I mean OLD. He did what he could, so don't read into this, but he has seen better days.

Would anyone be happy if we went into next season with exactly what we had last season?

I wouldn't. Don't care how cheap he was to sign, there have to be more serviceable vets out there to fill his spot, IMO. And I agree, provided Wang parts with some sheckles.

If Weight is expected to be on the top 2 lines then I have a bigger problem with this signing, otherwise he fills a spot on the 4th line and on the 1st PP unit.

If they also bring back Park, JAckman and too a lesser degree Sim without signing at least 1 major defensive FA again more of a problem.

IF and I know its a BIG IF, but if they get top 3 Dman and then another D Vet that is younger then 30, plus add a top 6 forward...having Weight around won't be the worst thing the Isles would have done this off season.

By my count there are 4 forward roster spots open this off season, Weight being one of them is not the end of the world.

 First step in icing another non playoff team! I hope all of you season ticket holders aren't gonna run out and renew if they bring back the same team. All you are doing is supporting the vicious cycle of losing. You loyal fans who have stuck it out and spent tons of money over the last decade or more deserve some return for your money, not more of the same nonsense. Seems to me that they are taking advantage of your loyalty. I haven't gone to a live game in over five years now. It is the only form of protest I have and I don't plan on going back until when and if they get serious about getting into the playoffs and beyond. Maybe I'm wrong and they will surprise me at free agent time but I highly doubt it. The only way this organization will ever listen is when they sell hardly any tickets. So please, if they do nothing in free agency this summer, please stop feeding a losing beast and don't re up your season tickets.

They now have less than 3K full season tix holders. How much lower can it go?

If they haven't listened by now they never will.

It all depends on the real estate/arena situation not what fans do.

This is great news, maybe he can score his 13th goal as an NY Islander

That's pretty funny, and it would be even funnier if it had no truth at all.

If it were worth it to go to games and not endure Richard Park getting so much icetime, people would spring for tickets.

No new arena would make up for the value Snow and Co. give fans. Like was said, the Hawks didn't sell out their new, SoTA arena until the guys in skates were worth paying to watch.

You should know by now that EVERYTHING comes from Cholly's perspective. Meaning, to Cholly and on LI it all depends on the real estate/arena situation not what fans do.

You think Cholly should/would pay Hossa and pay to the cap max like the Hawks do under the current conditions on LI?

I give him 10 games. If he can't hack it they should make him an assistant coach/gm and keep him from eating game minutes.

When the LHP is declared dead because Wang on't take all parking, event revenue, advertising, corporate box revenue, concessions, etc., 50% of the buildings and the revenue from there.....Wang might spend so he can sell the team or because he can't stand being a schmuck any longer.

Or he could go on a ski trip with the Kennedy clan, listening to Sonny and Cher on the way.

Cholly can make us contenders any time he chooses but in 10 years, he only allowed it once.

I have no problem with the signing. So long as he's at least 90% back from the shoulder injuries, he'll be able to contribute on the Power Play.

If we can strengthen the defense, this signing will seem a lot smarter than it does now.

Not for nothing, and yes I do agree that Weight could contribute on the PP, but shouldn't they be thinking that maybe a guy like Josh Bailey would possibly be ready to take over that role this season? I mean he will be starting his THIRD NHL season. I'd like to think that maybe this kid who makes "Pierre Turgeon like passes" would be ready to make a big contribution. Apparently they don't believe so.
