playoffs? ok i'll bite.
with the stunning additions of Mr. Knee/Back injuries Never played A Full Season Eaton and Mr. Injury/Sick/Bus traveling Never Played a Full Season Jurcina, Martinek will probably last a game or two more before being shut down...again.

I'm being critical because every season I'm foolishly optimistic. Not this time. We'll come close, like 10th place close, but we are not playoff ready. And say we do make the playoffs, woop-de-F'N-do, an 8th place finish for an early exit in the first round. How many times have we seen that?

If the team is a contender this year, they could be buyers as well. Hopefully a good reason to get more talent on board and for more than just one year.

Goin' cup crazy over here

Oh please.

we're actually poised to compete for a playoff spot this year with the revamped defense. And this time we actually have depth at the position.

All of younger forwards - Okposo, Tavares, Bailey, Comeau all played well last year and should improve on their play this year.

We finally have depth at the wing position with Martin and Neiddereiter waiting in the wings. Although I'm not thrilled that they brought back Sim and Hilbert (of all people), at least they are on two-way deals - and have plenty of NHL experience if we need to call upon a player due to injury.

I'm curious to see who is going to push Gillies out of his spot on the 4th line during training camp.

So we didn't make a big splash in free agency, as usual, but the defense looks a hell of a lot better this year than last. And this team almost eeked into the playoffs last year with Kohn and Brutal Bruno back there.

If DiPietro finally plays this season, this team will surpise some people - especially our own fans.

I got chills reading that

I ALSO HAD THE URGE TO PURGE :puke:

Q&A with Doug Weight

As expected, the New York Islanders agreed to a one-year deal with captain Doug Weight on Tuesday that will reportedly pay the 39-year-old $850,000, along with potential bonuses.

Weight was limited to just 36 games last season due to a torn rotator cuff and labrum that led to season-ending surgery in March. The Detroit native, who has appeared in 1,220 NHL games, has spent the summer rehabbing his shoulder and is eager for the start of training camp, which is now less than three weeks away.

Weight was gracious enough to speak with me earlier today.

BC: It was reported several weeks ago that you had agreed to a new deal with the Islanders. Can you explain what the holdup was?

DW: To be honest, I think it was just the fact that I know Garth well and we had come to an agreement and we just didn't cross paths until last week. We had a handshake agreement. I go up to northern Idaho and I just wasn't around to sign the contract. I hate to sound lazy or that we were banging out some crazy deal, but I really didn't do much negotiating. I was just excited to come back. It was just a matter of when we got it inked, really.

BC: When you did suffer the injury last season, was there ever a doubt in your mind that you'd be able to play again? Were you worried your career might be over?

DW: Certainly, there was doubt. My first 16 years (in the League) were relatively healthy. It's been pretty disappointing with all the injuries I've had. The shoulder's been kind of nagging me since I became an Islander. When I got hurt in November, that's kind of the reason I rehabbed it. I tore my labrum completely. But I didn't know if I was going to have another chance to play. In hindsight, I played horribly. I really couldn't perform. I had a lot of things on my mind that I never thought of on the ice before -- what position I was to not get hit. I kind of thrive on contact to make plays. I'm not the biggest or the fastest, so it was tough. Looking back, I wish I had done the surgery in November. But thankfully they wanted me back. I got (the surgery) done in March and I'm feeling really, really good right now. I'm working the shoulder hard and I've got myself in great shape. I'm really excited.

BC: Do you see yourself being a little bit tentative in training camp … just worrying about if you get hit the wrong way or anything like that? Are there going to be mental hurdles to jump?

DW: Yeah, I think there's always something at the beginning. I've had enough surgeries that I know there's scar tissue and I know there's things that are going to tweak it and there's going to be some soreness the day after. But for what I've gone through the last two years, it's just refreshing to be able to sleep and to wake up and have strength back in that shoulder. I feel like last year will give me a good head start and going into this with a lot of confidence. But like I said, I've done it before. I've played hurt and I've come back from surgeries before. There's always a period of adjustment. We'll see what happens.

BC: What do you think of the moves Garth has made this summer? Does that get you excited to get going?

DW: You know, it's been a tough sell. I know Garth was after a couple of guys that didn't end up here, but I was really excited first and foremost about Mark (Eaton) and James (Wisniewski) coming in on the back end. I think they're really, really going to help. They're going to help Mark Streit out a lot. We've got Radek (Martinek) coming back. We didn't have him the whole season. You know, it's amazing how two or three guys changes the complexion of your lineup. I think we're a defensively strong team now, which maybe hasn't been the case. And we've brought in some toughness -- guys that are willing to throw their body around up front and skate well. From what I've seen or heard, they have a great attitude. You also can't forget that these kids are a year older and a year stronger. Unfortunately the last two years we've missed the playoffs, but I think their bodies are going to mature and they're going to put their time in the gym. Hopefully that's a noticeable difference from last year and we'll really be taking some big strides.

BC: It seems like no matter what Garth does or how much progress you guys make -- you had an 18-point improvement last season -- everyone still has you guys pegged near the bottom of the standings. Do you read those predictions and if so, does it bother you?

DW: I used to read a lot before I turned 30 years old, but I'm just too busy now. I've got to keep up on my Internet to know who's going where. I've just got to make sure that I know the rules (laughs). I've just got to focus on my training and getting myself in shape. Do we deserve to be up higher? We're going to come in and I'm sure we'll discuss it, but you try to motivate yourself and you try to prove those people wrong. But until we do something … until we stay healthy as a team and until we play more consistent and learn it's a 60-minute game, we don't really deserve the respect from the fans or the media. We have to earn that, and that's a fun thing. We have a lot of good guys that care about each other within those four walls. It's something we've got to go out and earn. Maybe we can be a bit of a sleeper early and get some teams coming in a little flat and take advantage of that and get some confidence. But I think we're going to be a heck of a team. I'm as excited right now as I would be if I were on a team predicted to be first. Let's go to work and have some fun.

BC: It sounds as if Rick DiPietro is progressing well and will be ready for training camp. How much contact have you had with him this summer?

DW: We've texted a couple of times. Trying to talk to Ricky, it might be easier to get a hold of Obama. But he's feeling good. He feels strong. It's all pointing in the right direction. Ultimately, he's going to have to get out there and see how it goes. He's got to get on the ice every day and see how this thing responds. Along with the five guys we've got coming in, that could be like trading for a star. Ricky's just coming into his own in his career. He's had a hard road. Hopefully he can just stay healthy. Maybe he won't play 60 or 65 games, but if he can be a part of our team and get anywhere over 30 starts, I think that would be a real blessing to this organization and to Ricky's career. Him and Dwayne (Roloson) can feed off each other. You've got the new defense core, you've got the kids who are a year older, we've got some grit throughout our lineup … I really like the moves. They're subtle, but along with a growing team, they can make a big difference.

I remember when he was younger, he could set up goals and even go top shelf.
Now he's medically cleared to reach for the top shelf.

Hope he's 100% and can contribute 10-15 goals and 20-35 assists but even that seems like a stretch. I'd be very grateful to get that. Last year he played through an injury. Very courageous and while I admire him for his mentoring of our younger players, he needs some help on the ice IMO but we shall see.

May good health be in his future, we'll need that.

That would upset the space/time continuum and cause a conundrum so epic, a calamity the like the universe has not seen since its inception, that all matter would negate and all energy transform into one solatary dynamic super-particle that would store all existence within one nano-spaced entity, and then it would all pop back into shape, all being restored and Rick would still have fabulous hair.

I might be for it. :santa:

Sorry, buy Weights comments sound to me like someone who is just milking an organization for another $850k. I didn't hear "I'll lead by example; I'll prove the naysayers wrong; I'll help develop a winning attitude here; losing is not an option". I heard "Garth was here, I was trout fishing in Idaho so we didn't talk for three months; no biggie, Garth and I decided a long time ago that I would get any scraps left and help bring us to the cap FLOOR. Don't expect too much, I'm hurt and afraid to get hit, you know. And I'll probably miss a lot of games with soreness and old age. Hey, I'm almost 50 so what do you want from me?"
Geesh, we continue to validate everybody that says we're a joke.
That's because we are.
This is an easy out for both Garth and Dougie.
Anybody want to bet me on an over under? I bet he doesn't play 40 games. Over anyone?

I keep saying this. If you want to do the youth movement, go all in.
Name Okposo Captain.
Blackhawks: Toews
Penguins: Cindy
Keeping Weight is a contradiction of the youth movement.

Keeping Weight is a contradiction of the youth movement.

Blackhawks got Hossa, Madden, Campbell, Ladd.....vets who helped the kids grow.

Pittsburg got Guerin (Crosby cited importance), Whitney, Gonchar and a list when they first started the rebuild.

They BOTH got capable vets to guide young players in their rebuilds and did not stack the ice with a Mickey Mouse Club where the only adult was a coach/teacher monitoring the playground.

Okposo needs a captain to learn how to captain.

And I always prefer Detroit's youth movements....they never suck when going through one because they keep the top vets to show the top rookies the ropes. They wouldn't dress half our key prospects until they were MORE THAN ready.
