9:40 am: While Kirill Petrov’s chances of joining the Islanders organization may appear to be grim because the KHL regular season begins today, hope remains.

“Give this just two or three more days,” a source close to the Islanders’ talented prospect told Point Blank. “There is a possibility that something can be worked out.”

Petrov, an Islanders third round pick in 2008, is under contract to Kazan Ak Bars for two more seasons. In the two years since the Islanders drafted the 6-3 right wing, he has played primarily for Kazan’s B squad - in addition to the Russian national junior team.

A standout at Islanders prospect minicamp this summer, Petrov said he would like to join the Islanders organization immediately. Islanders GM Garth Snow shares Petrov’s wish to see him begin his North American development now, and continues to search for ways to spring his prospect out of the KHL. At Ak Bars training camp over the last three weeks, Petrov has been benched for some preseason games and could be destined for another season with their second-tier club.

Since a third year with the B squad will not enhance Petrov’s development, the Islanders want the forward on Long Island next week. Islanders prospects are playing a pair of rookie games in Boston next week before the official opening of camp on Sept. 17. According to the Islanders’ website, Petrov is on the roster for those rookie games.

“I’m holding out hope that a resolution can be reached for the benefit of Petrov’s future,” said the source. “We should know by the weekend, if not sooner.”

But what about the rule that states, once a European player is on a roster at the start of his league’s regular season, he cannot leave for the NHL without clearing waivers?

“There are a lot of issues with this one,” said the source. “Let’s start out by seeing if we can get him to Islanders training camp. Just give this a few more days.”

SET THE KID FREE DAMMIT !!!!!!!!! They aren't even using him on their primary team, and he WILL be free after next year anyway...just let him go ya Rooskie bastids!!! :yea:

i'm not understanding this. if a player leaves the KHL, he has to clear THEIR waivers or the NHL's?

My guess is it's the KHL's waiver system.

CB says Petrov not in lineup tonight for AK Bars. Looks like its B-squad, again.

Why isn't he making the regular lineup? Makes me wonder if he's even NHL ready :dontknow:

The KHL doesn't let young kids play.

They had this Ovechkin kid on the pine before he came over.

A player can't "leave" Russia with a contract. He either needs to buy out his current contract at 2/3rds the price or the team release him. The Isles in theory can't give him the money to buy out his contract and I'm not sure why that rule is in place or how they police it.

well if they can't give the money to petrov. Could they atleast give it to a third party? For example, the Islanders buy something from this person. And that person, with such a generous heart, loans the money to Petrov. And then......

China trip canceled, spending to cap floor, higher parking and fewer perks for fans...

in other words, don't expect our Isles to spend money to get Petrov over here before his KHL contract is up.

I'd be shocked if he came over earlier by some other means than money changing hands.

Man, was great back when guys could defect.

Why do we even care if he has a KHL contract? Russian players have been under nhl contracts and bolted for the KHL despite having years left on the nhl deal. Why not return the favor?

Normally, I wouldn't favor such a move, but the khl has done it to us. I forget the Russian on the Predators who bolted to go home despite years left on his nhl deal.

Well, they sure do churn out great players?

Perhaps young guys fight tooth and nail and gain icetime, becoming excellent players to do so? :disgraced:

Petrov doubtful for training camp

58 m ago By Katie Strang

One of the Islanders' top prospects--Russian winger Kirill Petrov-- is doubtful for training camp, according to general manager Garth Snow.

Petrov, a third-round draft pick in 2008, has not secured a release from his contractual obligation with Kazan Ak-Bars of the Russian Kontinental Hockey League (the KHL has already began their 2010-11 season).

Petrov, who spent the majority of the previous 2 seasons playing for Ak-Bars' junior team, has two years left (this season and next) on his contract with Ak-Bars.

Head coach Scott Gordon tagged Petrov as one of the team's most impressive young players during prospect camp, although he was held out of the Blue-Orange scrimmage with a shoulder injury.
