Islanders agree to terms with Mottau
Tuesday, 09.28.2010 / 2:22 PM / NHL Free Agency 2010

The New York Islanders announced today that they have agreed to terms on a two year contract with defenseman Mike Mottau.

Mottau, 32, spent the last three seasons with the New Jersey Devils. Last season, the Quincy, MA, native scored a career high 18 points (two goals, 16 assists) and a +4 plus-minus rating in 79 games with New Jersey.

"Mike is a solid puck-moving defenseman who will bring more experience to our blueline," said General Manager Garth Snow.

Mottau, a 6-0, 197 lbs. left-handed shooting defenseman, was drafted by the New York Rangers in the seventh round, 182nd overall, of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. After a four-year collegiate career at Boston College, he turned professional in the 2000-01 season, playing in his first 18 NHL games with the Rangers. In 258 career NHL games with the Rangers, Calgary Flames and Devils, Mottau has seven goals and 46 assists for 53 points with a +10 plus-minus rating and 137 penalty minutes. Mottau has also skated in 17 Stanley Cup Playoff games, all with New Jersey, in which he’s recorded four points (two goals, two assists).
Garth Snow circa 2006:

wow. one way, 2 yr deal as per Botta. I didn't think they would add to the defense since we have a little depth there. Not a huge Mottau fan, but glad Garth didn't make a panic trade...

Mottau came on and played well for the Devs.

I think he's a decent bottom 3 and IMO, better than Jurcina so I think this is a good move by Garth under the circumstances.

ahh I think this move was made because some guy by the name of Mark Streit hurt his shoulder last week, not back in July. I could be wrong? :dontknow:

don't know who you are man..but what did the Islanders do to make the team better in the summer so that they wouldn't have to rely on one man to Quarterback our powerplay and take 25+ minutes of ice time a night?? What did they do?? The gloves come off with this club..don't tell me that "were rebuilding, youth must prevail."

Do we win more now? Yep. I like our toughness and the fact that IN NO WAY DOES BURNO GERVAISE STAY AN ISLANDER once Streit is back.
"clearly it's Rick DiPietro's stupidity that's put the islanders in this situation getting into an altercation when a game was over..." Keith Jones on VS

"But the Coliseum became a repository for all the team's troubles, a convenient scapegoat. There were suggestions that no major free agent ever would set foot in such a decrepit place. We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann

WHAT I LOVED WAS THIS LITTLE BIT OF BOLOGNA

http://www.newsday.com/blogs/sports/isles-files-1.812028

Shortly after the news of Okposo's prognosis, the Islanders announced the signing of veteran defenseman Mike Mottau to a two-year, one-way deal worth $1.6 million. Mottau, who played the past three seasons with the Devils, finished with two goals and 16 assists for New Jersey last year.

"Mike was a player we had interest in back in July," Snow said. "We think very highly of Mike and he's a good puck mover; he has a physical element to his game and is a solid all-around defenseman. For us, he's another quality and high-character person to add to the locker room, who not only has lots of regular season experience but post-season experience as well."

YEP THEY HAD INTEREST THATS WHY IT TOOK 3 MONTHS TO IRON OUT THE DETAILS OF THE KOVI LIKE CONTRACT

WHY DO THEY LIE?? DO THEY THINK WE'RE THAT STUPID?

They could've had little interest. Garth just doesn't specify how much interest. Vagueness by design? :dontknow:

technically, Garth wasn't a liar if the team was interested in any or every UFA.
he is a liar when he proclaims that he has a "green light to spend" etc etc etc

None-the-less, I am not upset with this move, I LIKE Mottau. Forget the money, forget
replacing Streit and his offense. Mottau is a little more physical than Streit and he's very durable.
If used as a bottom 3 defenseman and it allows Wiznewski to quarterback the powerplay with Martinek or Hillen, maybe the team isn't as bad.
(just trying my best to think positive here)
But wait, there's that question mark of goal. DP. Maturity, common sense.
We saw him lose it a bit and go after Sim behind the net in Blue/Orange game and also
make a very bonehead move by diving out towards the far boards to play puck clear when he didn't need to.

Only a matter of time before we read the report about "swelling" and the same old story gets republished in Newsday.

At this point, we as Islanders fans have NO choice but to sit back and root with realistic expectations because everything is up in the air. We cannot even criticize Scott Gordon anymore
because how can he or anyone be evaluated THIS season when he's behind the 8 ball. As much as I'm convinced that he isn't the coach for this team, methinks he'll get renewed.

I just hope we have some kids like Martin, Nino and others who take the next step so we have something to cheer about because there is so much stacked against us right now and not just because of the Streit/Okposo injuries.

Dude Garth hit the nail on the head when he said "would you like to stay in a 5 Star resort or a motor lodge" The Coliseum is a wreck you can put a fresh coat of paint on the walls, but at the end of the day it is still an outdated building that is not enticing to free agents. Sure he can throw all the cap money around he wants but with a losing team and a bad building no one will come. We will have to wait till they move to Queens to lure quality free agents.

PS there is still time to pick up a good player from a salary cap strapped team. ;)
