3:00 today marks the Roster deadline and CAP deadline for teams. The Vancouver Canucks, New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames are all over the cap and will may be forced to make a deal to shed salary prior to the deadline.
Here is Strang's take on what our roster will prolly look like...although there is always the very slim chance a trade come our way before 3:00. It's like a mini deadline day

Roster deadline day
33 m ago By Katie Strang
Today's the day we'll finally get a glimpse of what the Islanders opening-night roster will be; the team must trim their roster to 23 by the 3 p.m. deadline today.
With three players on the IR (Streit, Okposo and Schremp) and yesterday's addition of Michael Grabner, the Islanders will have to trim by two players, presumably one forward and one defenseman.
The Islanders will carry eight defenseman to begin the season, so I'd expect the eight guys with one-way contracts to stick on, which means prospect Calvin de Haan will likely be sent back to his junior team--the Oshawa Generals. Just like last year, de Haan had a good camp for the Islanders and showed what an up-and-coming talent he will be for the Islanders' blue line in years to come. My guess is that they'd like to see him with another year to develop physically and to dominate at the junior level. From a development standpoint, I don't see anything wrong with that.
So now, we move on to the forwards. I think Nino NIederreiter is a lock to make the team out of camp, and at the very least, remain with the team for the first nine games. I also believe Jon Sim deserves to be on the opening-night roster. Sim is a pro who is a pain in the A** to play against, came prepared to fight for his roster spot in camp and played relentlessly in the Isles' preseason games.
I have said all summer that I think Matt Martin will make the team, but my guess is that his roster spot may be tenuous now with Grabner's addition. Martin worked really hard this whole off-season to improve his skating and prepare for camp. He's a hard-working, gritty third or fourth-line grinder and a physical presence in front of the net. I have no doubt he'll play plenty of games with the Islanders this season, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is the one to take the hit for Grabner.
We'll see what happens. Back later with any transactions.
Below are your line combos for the day:
Comeau-Tavares-Parenteau
Moulson-Nielsen-Hunter
Bailey-Weight-Niederreiter
Martin-Konopka-Sim
Grabner and Gillies are your extra forwards
As bad as I want Martin on the team...I don't totally hate the idea of having Sim around (flame away) if he can play like he did late in the year last season.

I wouldn't mind Martin getting more development time at the Bridge if he can only marginally break this lineup. Maybe he needs more time. If he does I hope they give it to him and let him earn his way on the team sometime this season, where hopefully he will stay for good.

Sim didn't drop the gloves and pound Cammalleri when he slashed Nino. Sim and Hisey were his linemates. For that alone, Sim should be sent down.
Martin has the size and work ethic and last year, did absolutely nothing to be sent back to the Bridge when he was called up.
Don't understand it.
That Bailey, Weight, Nino line should be fun to watch tho. BNW line.

Since he doesn't need to clear waivers to be sent down...he'll be the "easy" B-port move. Calvin is heading back to juniors for sure...and probably rightfully so. So that's that I guess.
Looks like Nino is a lock...for nine game at least

I didnt catch a single minute of the preseason. But I cant say he was ever mentioned in the press for his play. I plead ignorance here.

Sim played gritty in preseason. I can see the coaching staff wanting him. Just upset he and no one else came to Nino defense to pound Cammalleri. Sim did go in and shove but that was it.
I always bark about everyone "earning" their spot regardless of contract. He probably earned it.
When preseason started I was worried that Nino Neiderreiter wuld make te team for marketing reasons and then after watching him compete and not look out of place, I was worried that he wouldn't. Glad he's on, even if it winds up being just 9 games. He showed more life and a willingness to play/compete than most of the other "prospects" we have who looked uninspired.

Both CB and Strang today are implying Sim is staying...citing his tenacious work ethic, etc. bla bla bla.
Either they "know" or have seen something so he's prolly sticking around (note he wasn't waived yesterday ala Hilbert).
No need for any of us to pout about it anyway...our injury history assures Martin will be up in no time.

El Nino with Weight? I can see El Nino waiting at the blue line, taking a nap, eating a sandwich and then entering the zone. I'd swap him and Hunter.
And I would not be surprised if there is a move in here before 3.
Just got a feeling we'll move Gervais.

I'd still much rather see the young player come up and play instead of some average vet that caused 3 years of hair pulling, with only moments of good play. The future remains the future. The past should be buried. How soon we forget that Sim was so disappointing that he spent a good part of a season lost in the AHL earning an NHL salary. So for two weeks he plays his like a guy trying to save his job, and the future will just have to wait. Sim playing and Martin going to Bridgeport amounts to an injustice to the 'rebuild'.

Perhaps they are just simply terrified that Sim will be claimed off waivers

Not to totally defend Sim but his first year he only played 2 games before his knee was blown up. So his "first year" was his second season and was recovering from major knee surgery and couldn't perform in Gordon's system. he was sent to Bridgeport and never said anything bad and learned the system and worked himself into shape. Then last year I thought he was a very effective 4th line player and agitator(77G 13G 9A 44PIM), the Sim who played last year is the one I was hoping for so I don't have a problem with him playing on the 4th line to start.
I will agree with Steve that I was disappointed that Sim didn't react to the slash on Nino but will give him a pass for now.

Sim being here is symbolic of how terrible this franchise has become. Plain and simple. When do the deeper discounts begin for ticket packages?

Sim, Gervais should be sent down. Neither will be claimed off waivers so our crap treasure stays safe.
Hell, do we really need Gillies on opening day?

I don't know if the roster is locked for a certain period of time the first weekend but I would guess Gillies is on the roster to play Monday and not Saturday.

I've been searching for days to get a new quote up there. You guys just haven't come up with just the right eye catching phrase and I can't use only CUPZ's quote, so I came up with one. Please feel free to knock mine off as soon as possible.

And the roster is set: Nino in..Martin and deHaan out
- Quote:

Nino Niederreiter makes the team
7 m ago By Katie Strang
Islanders first-round draft pick Nino Niederreiter has made the team out of training camp and will likely stay with the team for at least the first nine games of the season. The 18-year-old Swiss winger, who was selected fifth overall at this June's draft, will dress for the team's regular-season opener against Dallas on Saturday night at Nassau Coliseum.
Niederreiter joins the ranks of fellow first-round draft picks John Tavares (2009) and Josh Bailey (2008) who made the team out of camp.
If Niederreiter struggles at the NHL level, however, the Islanders can send him back to his junior team--the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League--without financial penalty.
To make room on their 23-man roster--the league-mandated deadline is at 3 p.m. today--forward Matt Martin was sent to Bridgeport and defenseman Calvin de Haan was sent back to his junior team--the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League.
As expected, the Islanders will carry eight defensemen. Enforcer Trevor Gillies and agitator Jon Sim, both on two-way contracts, also made the team.
Michael Grabner, who the Islanders claimed off waivers from Florida yesterday, skated with the team today. Scott Gordon said he will not play in the team's first two games--Saturday against Dallas and Monday against the Rangers.

1:25 pm, NVMC: With enough depth on defense - bolstered by Garth Snow’s wise signing of the reliable Mike Mottau - the Islanders have done what’s best for the development of Calvin de Haan and returned him to Oshawa.
The 2009 12th overall pick also has a great chance of playing top-four minutes for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in Buffalo beginning Dec. 26. It should be remembered that a shoulder injury limited the 19-year-old to just 34 OHL games last season. Also keep in mind Scott Gordon’s comment at the start of camp that youngsters de Haan and Travis Hamonic should only be kept around if they could crack the top four.
“The depth we have on D is a lot different than we had last year,” said Gordon. The coach added, “He had a slow start, and Calvin would tell you that himself, but he really came on during camp.”
In a mild surprise, Matt Martin has been sent to Bridgeport. He does not have to clear waivers. Martin, who missed a few days of practice with a foot injury, skated with the Islanders the last two days. There’s a great chance you’ll see Martin’s youthful energy and toughness on Long Island by the end of this month.
“We have some other things we want to look at with Nino, and with (Michael) Grabner coming in,” said Gordon. Matt didn’t do anything wrong.”
Goalie Nathan Lawson, expected to be the Islanders’ No. 3 this season, has been placed on Long Term Injured Reserve.
2010 fifth overall pick Nino Niederreiter, who just turned 18, will be in the lineup for your New York Islanders when they host Dallas in the season opener on Saturday. “One game at a time,” said Gordon. “There isn’t any rush to make a decision.”
2010-11 NYI Opening Night Roster
Comeau - Tavares - Parenteau
Moulson - Nielsen - Hunter
Bailey - Weight - Niederreiter
Gillies - Konopka - Sim
Grabner (who primarily plays right wing, will likely sit out the first two games as he gets acclimated to the team’s systems)
Defense: Eaton, Gervais, Hillen, Jurcina, MacDonald, Martinek, Mottau, Wisniewski
DiPietro
Roloson
Notes: The New York Times writes about the death of recent NHL uniforms and logos, quoting yours truly, painfully.
Nino Niederreiter, as you might expect was overjoyed about making the club. I was disappointed that he didn’t say his usual line, “It’s just fantastic.” His family is coming in from Switzerland to catch his NHL debut. Niederreiter will be the youngest player to get in a game in Islanders history, beating out David Chyzowski.
Michael Grabner: “I didn’t have a very good camp in Florida. I worked hard in the offseason, but I didn’t really do much out there. This is another opportunity for me.”
