I wouldn't give a sh!t if Tavares tried to hit him...he's our star...Burish's a dirtbag...you go after him.
Why are we paying Konopka and Gillies to be on this team if they don't stick up our top player?
This team is a joke.

It's up to the coach.

The coach sends out the guys who are paid to stick up for Tavares and Co.

You can pay Ovechkin $10M a year to score goals but if your coach won't play him or tell him to do so, you're misplaying assets.

I hope Gillies and Konopka can run a strong forecheck and create offense and turnovers soon, or they won't be vital contributors, will they?

thats all on a gordon...he decides what he wants his team to do.. :dontknow:

Completely disagree with this. They had the rest of the game to respond. And they didn't. This is not the coaches fault (here we go again, if Tavares gets a cold Gordon is at fault cause he didn't turn the AC down on the bus).

If a guy is on this team for toughness (aka Gilles, Konopka or whoever) when Burish hits Tavares from behind you do what the tough guy is supposed to do. You go after him. Immediately. The coach, captain or your linemates do not need to say "OK son, here's what just happened, he hit our best player. Now, you've been added to this roster because you're the tough guy. Now go get him, he's number..."

After watching it a good number of times, it looked like a cheap shot from behind and JT's head snaps awkwardly as he was not looking. Sore neck? Okay. But this TEAM needs to stand up for itself. Why the hell were these guys brought here? To be told what to do? No, they were brought here for one reason- to bring toughness. And they didn't. So to me its on THEM.

I have to disagree with You on this. We all saw Gordon pull Konopka back to the bench after the hit and obviously told him not to go after Burrish and Gillies did not get a single shift after the first period. The team takes the personality of its coach and our coach is obviously a pussy.
Rick DiPietro- Retiring?Nothing like that has even crossed my mind. I know I can play..

Yeah, that was definatly the case, you could see Gordon pull Konopka off...

However you would have expected SOMEONE to visit Burish at some point...

Yeah, I agree with this. Gillies should have stood up for JT, no question and there is no reason he didn't. None. No excuse. He should have fought Burish from the bench, with incredibly long arms and even worse, fighting from the bench with those looooong arms, Burish couldn't have gotten one punch landed. This makes Gillies even more of a coward.

The coach plays you if you overspeed well. The coach has not shown the propensity to playing situations AT ALL. Not fighting, not keeping a lead....he's a one trick pony schmuck who at best should be running power plays in the NHL.

Hockey has three zones. Hockey has fighting. This guy is a continuation of Lavy's run and gun hockey. I sincerely think Wang likes that game and Lavy was screwed because Lavy had WHAT WORKED and ditched it that offseason. Now we have a mandate throughout the organization to play the Cupcake Coaching Trophy winner's system.

And that winner doesn't believe in fighting.....unless you do it in the offensive zone?

But seriously, why didn't Gillies leave the bench the whole game? Because he's a coward!

I brought this up in the game day thread and not Isles fan said boo.

FINALLY see some fellow fans address what I believe is a huge issue with this coach.

Al Arbour sent out his pugilists back when Pat LaFontaine received a clean hit by James Patrick in the 1990 playoffs.
Gordon pulled Konopka. Case closed.

One of th most satisfying moments in the team's history. Bomber skating around like a madman....it was poetic.

But we don't need a goon, just an aggressive forecheck

I believe it's taboo to compare Arbour to Gotrun BTW, Steve. "Gordon doesn't have a Stanley Cup team in front of him." :puke:

I know.
Just want to point out...I was NOT comparing Gordon to Arbour in ability as a coach, just the choices they made and how they handle sending a message.

IMO, it doesn't matter if you have hall of famers playing for you or you have a rebuilding team with prospects.
And besides the fact, isn't Scott Gordon supposed to be this great teacher of young teams???
How the hell does he NOT have his team prepared to stand up for each other no matter who is on the ice??
Jurcina, Eaton, Comeau and Parenteau were on the ice when Tavares was blindsided and they did oogats, zip, nada.

That isn't on the players, that is on the coach.

You're giving the guys that PLAY a free pass on this one. We can agree to disagree but someone should've done something. Sim? One of the guys on the ice at the time? Now, if they did stand up for their guy and Gordon benched them for doing so I'd be the first to call him a pussy.

However, they did nothing and had two full periods to respond. Isn't Weight the so called veteran captain? They did nothing and while it is easy to simply blame it on the coach (what else is new) this is on the players. They saw it happen and did nothing. Nothing. Not even getting in the guys face to let him know they had an issue with it.

That absolutely is on the coach not the players.

The coach has seen guys take runs at our guys and in 3 years has NOT DONE SHYTE about it.

Having a cement head on the bench with a stache and stupid snarl does nothing.

With all die respect. I'm sorry, but the "it's not their job to fight" excuse doesn't fly when a superstar is involved.
Ask anyone worth their salt in hockey circles and they'll tell you the same.
When your franchise player gets cheap shotted, whether it's peewee herman on the ice or charles manson, you go after the person who inflicted the harm and send a message to them, their team and the mudderfriggen league that your franchise player is OFF limits.
The fact that Gordon pulled Konopka off the ice on ensuing faceoffs just speaks volumes.

If you play under the same coach for so long, you GOTTA know what you're supposed to do. Weight says fight, Gorton does not, who do you listen to?

Gorton's coaching is what gets these guys icetime, not Weight or Sim or Gillies or even DP's approval/insight. You put Crawford or Babcock or Renney behind the bench and the players don't let you forget that hitting our star player is taboo.

Gordon? You just keep skating and skating and pulling a nut out there. There's little history to support Gorton's use of fighters as anything other than slower overspeeders.

Posted about the same, but would like to add...did you see Datsyuk fight the other night?

Pavel Datsyuk turned into an ANIMAL. Scrawny looking, his teammates call him the strongest friggen guy in the league. It was perplexing. The DRW take no **** and that was proof. They don't fight like a goon squad but they will DEFINITELY take care of business while our coach is too busy rolling out his version of the Beanpot Trot.
