Defenseman acquired from Ducks in exchange for a conditional third round pick in the 2011 Draft
Friday, 07.30.2010 / 5:13 PM / News
New York Islanders
The New York Islanders have acquired James Wisniewski from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a conditional third round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Wisniewski, 26, finished second among Ducks defensemen in scoring and seventh on the team with a career-high 30 points (three goals, 27 assists) in 69 games last season. The Canton, Michigan native also led Anaheim in blocked shots with 102, ranked second on the team with 129 hits and finished fourth among skaters in average ice time at 24:20.

“We see James as a key addition to our team and we feel our fans will connect with his style of play,” said Islanders General Manager Garth Snow. “He is a solid puck-moving defenseman who can bring an added element of toughness to our blue-line.”

Wisniewski, a 5’11, 197 pound defenseman, has split his pro career between the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks, playing in a total of 254 games. He has totaled 97 points (17 goals, 80 assists) with 264 penalty minutes. Chicago’s fifth round selection (156th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft has also posted 70 points (17 goals, 53 assists) in 139 AHL games with the Norfolk Admirals and Rockford IceHogs.

Wisniewski made his professional debut with Norfolk in the 2004-05 season, after completing a four-year Junior career with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League. In his final season with Plymouth, Wisniewski was named the OHL and Canadian Major Junior Defenseman of the Year, and was named to both the OHL and Canadian Major Junior First All-Star Teams.

I really like this player.
Only giving up a conditional 3rd and we get a guy who can play the point on the powerplay and set up Streit for the big shot (if needed). Or, if 4th forward is used, this guy is a decent puck mover. Not the best at even strength, but much better than what we have.

Our defense is not spectacular but much better now.

We now have
Top 2 level defensemen
STREIT
Top 4 level defensemen
WISNIEWSKI, EATON
5th, 6th defensemen
JURCINA, HILLEN, MACDONALD, MARTINEK

oh yeah, and Bruno Gervais.

Good trade. I bet the cap space means the Ducks will sign someone else.

I see that Wisniewski is under 6 feet and less than 200 lbs. I must admit I don't know a lot about his game. A superficial look at his size would suggest (perhaps wrongly) that we are still in need of a big, bruising type of d-man. Can someone please clarify?

EDIT: a quick glance at IPB seems to indicate otherwise. Nice.

nhl.com has the CONDITION OF THE TRADE:

The Islanders will have the option until June 1, 2011, to transfer to Anaheim their own third-round selection in the 2011 Entry Draft or Colorado's third-round selection, previously acquired by the Islanders.

The trade is conditional on Wisniewski passing a physical by 5 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Already, this is one of Snow's best trades, ever.

Not a superstar, but a workhorse. Better than Sutton.
They could always trade one of the defensemen for a mid range pick at deadline if they're out of playoff picture since de Haan, Hamonic or Donovan might be knocking on the door next year.

I wanted us to sign Kurtis Foster or Paul Mara.
Instead we trade one of our 3rd's for a guy who really hasn't had his best seaosn in the league yet and could very well have it this year.

Garth gets kudo's on this one. Unless Director of Pro scouting Kenny Morrow had something to do with this.

We'd have to put together a decent package to get rid of some of the garbage though. There is definitely still a few decent guys left out there so some teams that are looking to shed cap space should be looking to make moves.

He looks and sounds good but my question would be why did they give him to us so cheap!!! Either third round pick is a very small price if he is as good as advertised.

We actually threw in 2 dozen cupcakes and a blogger to be named later.

Rumormill has the Ducks looking to sign a free agent or 2 and this was a salary dump.
Also, Luca Sbisa might be ready this year for them so they may be set on defense.
We'll see, I don't care so much for them.

This, for the first time since the draft, is some real good Islanders news.

After Charles Wang has been taking a dump on us fans, it's nice to see Garth take a WIZZ.

I was concerned about this one solely bc of how cheap he came. If it is a salary dump then great p/u for us.
And he hits like a freight train.
Finally, good news in Islander Country.

I'm still waiting to hear all the negativism and complaints about this trade. After all, Garth made this deal in July and we all know he is Mr. August! How dare he! This must clearly mean that we are dumping salary and moving to Kansas City. :P ;)

Sorry, just having some fun. Looks like there is a feeling out there that this is just the first of one, and possibly two, more moves that Garth might make. Very interesting. I would love to see one more real physical d-man added and get rid of some of the excess baggage.

Streit - Wiz
Hillen - (bruiser-type)
Mac - Eaton
Jurcina, Kohn, Reese

I wonder what a package of Martinek, Gervais, a prospect (Ness?) and a pick might fetch us? Wonder if that is enough to steal a top 6 forward or a physical d-man. Would hate to see Marty go but history tells us that he is an injury waiting to happen. Best to cash in on him before he gets sent off to the ER/IR.

I guess it makes sense that some fans who've been so bothered by the negativity received by this regime
and have been so starved for something positive to cheer about, could now be
ready to proclaim Snow GM of the year after this.
I LOVE this trade. Great move. We are almost at the cap floor still trying to "circumvent" the cap floor with gimpy goalie, Weight bonuses and Witt buyout while a professionally run franchise like the Devils is circumventing the cap CEILING.
What do we have?

NO sufficient radio deal.
NO replacement for assistant GM and Director of Pro scouting nor answer about his release.
NO OBJECTIVE sportscasters or media types allowed to cover Isles (per WANG, see Jaffe firing)
NO money to be spent above the cap.
NO resolution on our gimpy 15 year bastid, just more excuses.
NO legitimate team sponsored free events to reward loyal season ticket holders.

Everything still on the cheap. This is still the GM who went to the NHL's annual GM meetings
this past year and put on his best actors face to push Charles Wang's idea of having the
8th spot in the playoffs awarded to the winner of a tournament between the non payoff teams.
We were laughed at by the entire NHL media for those who remember.

But we should as you say pay attention to "Mr. August". This one move grants a 30 day window of Koolaid dispensing to cool off those poor souls who get all heated up over their hockey team and question moronic ownership. How dare they. Didn't they get the memo?
"We're ALL Islanders". Why we gotta believe.

This is a very good signing. More toughness and and quality on the blueline. As my son said, another D-man that doesn't wear a visor. :fight:

And, right on cue, bing....!!!
Thank you Steve for, if nothing else, being as consistent as you are.

I also very much like this deal. Snow isn't GM of the Year (but I do think he is unfairly maligned and done better than many [cough cough] give him credit for) but Wiz adds an important piece of the puzzle to this team. The fact that he was had for a conditional 3rd rounder seems like a steal. There's still a few more moves to make but this certainly was a good one.

Good lord, is that the noise of cyanide futures crashing and the price of kool-aid stocks shooting through the roof? IMPOSSIBLE! :P :o :D ;)

Yeah, I think salary dump (making 3.2 mil) combined with him being an UFA after this year. We weren't going to give up much.
