They are planning for lots of injuries, as per the last several years.  They probably need 10 solid blue liners to get through the season.

yeah, that's what I thought. I'm just curious to see who sits.

Jurcina. He's got a 1 year deal and is easily the odd man out now. Unless he starts living up to his potential, he's got to be behind Eaton, MacD, Hillen on the depth chart.

There's no way Jurcina won't play to start the season. Unless he REALLY stinks up the joint in preseason, there's no way he doesn't play.

Martinek might be the 7th d-man unless his legs are less broken then the last time we saw him. The guy's been through so many bad breaks, after a while you just can't come back the same from some of them.

check out the comments from some fans...not sure if accurate, or something for us to look at come season...Wiz has some proving to do this year...I won't get my hopes up high on him...would be nice to see another "mark streit" steal...

Well I think we should all wait & watch how Wiz does this year before making judgments about this trade. This guy is not underrated though.Niedermayer-Wiznewski was not a good pairing last year.Maybe he will be more consistent this year. But dont be shocked if he ends up being a frastrating player to watch.I loved his physical presence, skating & the 30 points he brought. It sucks he wasnt more consistent defensivly because when he was good, he was one of our best defenseman. Most nights he was not though.Coughs up the puck a LOT.Especially from the point in the offensive zone, & down low in the defensive end. Also takes penalties at bad times,& goes for the big hit often, finding himself out of position. We have defensive issues obviously. But Wiz was a big reason for it to.

let's not go crazy. we got a good dman, not the second coming.

And we still aren't deep enough at forward or tough enough to make the playoffs this coming season.

It's a little too early to be saying we won't be in the playoffs for sure at this point. Let's at least wait to November to start talking about missing the playoffs.

We do, however, have one of the toughest divisions in hockey so it should still be fun to watch how it plays out.

I don't see us as a playoff team on paper, but I;m sure someone will say, "the game is played on the ice".

Our defense is slightly better, but our goaltending is still in question. Big question.
Forwards, we have alot of 3rd and 4th liners spread forced to play higher slots than they should.
Not because they are terrible players, bad guys. Just our lack of established players and top line talent.

I never like the line speculation game. I'm old school. Let every sinle one of them EARN a roster spot and playing time in camp.
The same way Mouslon did this past season. Force a tough decision. Force the team to even have to waive or trade a guy on a 1-way deal. Not suggesting I want to see that, just throwing out an example.

I4C:

Really? I have to disagree with you. Depth at forward and team toughness are, IMO, several things that we may actually consider as relative strengths. What I think we are lacking up front is not depth, but elite talent. A Bossy-esque sniper, if you will. But I think we have tons of depth. The issue is turning some of that depth/quantity into rare quality.

And Konopka, Martin (hopefully), Gillies, Yablonski and Wiz are not enough toughness? I think we've added a lot of grit, though I would agree with you if you think that most of these guys won't see regular minutes.

Playoffs? I'm thinking the Isles stand as good a shot as a host of other teams to realistically compete for the 6-8 slots that are so typically up for grabs in the East. Definitely not a lock by any means, but I certainly think that the trajectory is upward and (hopefully) we will be in the run of things.

Asking for a Bossy-esque sniper is a bit much to ask for. That's like saying you can't win without an Ovechkin type player, which, as we know, isn't necessarily true. Although I agree it would make for an exciting regular season. Tavares is probably the closest we'll get to an elite sniper. Hopefully he grows a bit more this year as a player and we get to see the real talent seep through the cracks.

I hear ya, but I think you may have misunderstood my point (sorry if my wording was a bit vague). I was simply responding to I4C's post above. Let's face it...one does not ask for a Bossy-esque sniper. You pray for it, sacrifice small mammals and sell your soul several hundred times just to get in on the lottery to be considered for a chance to attend the event that will consider who gets to enter into a 500 man steel cage match with the winner then MAYBE getting to draft him. Maybe.

OK...that post just gives a real disturbing view into your weekends ;) :P

Yes...we are short elite forwards. I think we are 2 short of a legit top 6 forwards. However, we do not have toughness. Matt Martin will likely be a 3rd liner tops and while I'm impressed with the brief stint I've seen, he has alot to prove.

Wizz is a tough guy. You just showed me ONE on defense.

As for Gillies and Yab...will they even dress most nights? Sure, they'll likely put on jerseys for a game v. Philly, but they aren't even going to be consistently in the lineup, so I really can't count on their toughness.

I'm talking about guys who will dress 70+ games a season and contribute...more than just a thug who can drop gloves but have a consistent role night in and night out and fill it. And it doesn't have to be a guy who drops gloves but a guy who can win battles in the corners and in front of them net and stands up for teammates. It doesn't have to be a 30 goal scorer, but do we have good grinders who can contribute at both ends of the ice? I think Matt Martin will fill that role well on third line. Who else will?

As was brought up before...ON PAPER...this is not a playoff team. No way. I think alot of fans are going to be disappointed with the play of Eaton. (Keep in mind that for 1 million more, we could have signed Scuderi the year prior who is a far superior defensemen). JMHO but this team as it is now is going to need to add more pieces and/or get every break possible to make the playoffs this year.

My weekends are far more disturbing than that post can ever capture...which is exactly why I am such a happy and optimistic guy. After all, when you scrape around the bottom of the gene pool barrel, it's hard not to look up at the rest of life! I did wind the weekend up with great movie - "The Two Escobars" - and a lobster/steak dinner.

I see that we differ on where the Isles will end up this coming year. It would be nice to see Snow do his August thing and maybe add another piece or two. But even without that, I am of the belief that the internals of this team are good enough that simple maturation, plus the improvements in the defense, will take us up a notch....that being a team that competes to get into the playoffs. I do think we benefit from being in the East where most teams are in it until the very end. That said, I think we can hit the mid-to-upper 80s in point totals. That should bring us into the game for slots 6-8. Just my .02.

If you look on the first page you get when you go to the NYI site it has him standing there in the away jersey. But, he has a mic clipped on and number 10...so its probably Ninos jersey photoshopped on. Zheesh.

better even, if you click refresh, you'll notice they cycle FREE AGENT signings.
It's pretty pathetic.

You'll see Streit in a Canadiens jersey on one side, Isles jersey on the other...
Matt Mouslon in a Kings jersey on one side, Isles jersey on the other...
Dwayne Roloson in an Oilers jersey on one side, Ilses jersey on the other...
P.A. Parenteau in a RAGS jersey on one side, Isles logo on the other...
Zenon Konopka in a BOLTS jersey on one side, Isles logo on the other...
P.A. Parenteau in a RAGS jersey on one side, Isles logo on the other...
Milan Jurcina in a CAPS jersey on one side, Isles logo on the other...
and last but not least, Mark Eaton in a PENS jersey on one side with an Isles logo on the other...

This is a representation of Isles free agents the last 3 years and the team is trying to show fans that they are spending money. But we know better. Cap floor.

Really, this subliminal advertising is no big deal to me, just the fact that they threw in a RAGS jersey really sucks. Should have left that out IMO.

No way, cult icon is webb, keep webb20.

You should only change your screen name if Doug Weight takes #40.
That would be cool.

I knew there was a reason they let him go so cheaply. This is all we need, another turnover machine a la Brutal. B)

Just kidding.

One post from somewhere else is not what I'll judge the guy by.

I actually hope he DOES have something to prove, then goes out and proves it.

I guess the best we can do is wait and see, and hope he turns out to be a solid defender.
