not sure about the 2 games being fair....Niklas Hjalmarsson got 2 games for the hit from behind/hit to the head of pominville....

NHL was supposed to be making a big statement about hits to the head this year

Hits to the head, giving head...to a nimrod like Campbell it must appear be the same.
I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

I just read Chris Botta's entry at Fanhouse.
IMO, dead on the money in his criticism of Campbell.

Despite James Wisniewski's Childish Act, NHL Went Too Far in Two-Game Ban
10/12/2010 8:51 PM ET By Christopher Botta

James Wisniewski absolutely deserved to be punished for simulating oral sex during his goal crease skirmish with Rangers shift disturber Sean Avery. But while this may seem like splitting hairs, the NHL went too far in suspending the Islanders' defenseman for two games, instead of just one.

What Wisniewski did was wrong. No one, so far not even anyone associated with the Islanders, has tried to condone his action. It was awkward and embarrassing. But there was something innocent about Wisniewski's terrible lapse of judgment.

Not for a moment did I believe it was premeditated. Not for a moment did the first-year Islander think he would take the majority of the North American headlines away from his team's uplifting, come-from-behind 6-4 win over the rival Rangers. Not for a moment did Wisniewski think about the potential of embarrassment for his team, his league or -- as a husband of three months -- himself.

No, he didn't think. That's why, as unseemly as the moment was, he deserves a pass. For those few seconds in the heat of battle against one of the game's most notorious characters, James Wisniewski might have thought he was playing against the rest of the 15-year-olds at 6:00 am in Michigan. He might have forgotten that he wasn't knocking the puck around with his buddies on the available ice at midnight. Wisniewski lost his way, but it was only because his intensity blurred the thought of where he was.

The NHL had to do something. If Colin Campbell, the league's hilariously inconsistent czar of supplementary discipline, wanted to give him a pass, Gary Bettman surely would have gotten involved. Bettman happened to be at the Islanders-Rangers matinee on Monday at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. If the commissioner didn't have a full grasp of what transpired during the first period, he did when his staffers told him the lowlight was played all night on networks where they talk a lot of hockey -- and plenty more where they rarely do.

So one game would have been plenty. Nick Boynton of the Chicago Blackhawks received a one-game suspension for a throat-slash gesture during a preseason game. Boynton's action was wrong and painfully outdated. Wisniewski's was wrong and hopefully will never be seen again on an NHL rink. Why would the Islander get twice the punishment as Boynton for an inappropriate gesture? What's Campbell's explanation for this one?
Wisniewski's eight-game suspension for running Brent Seabrook last season should be irrelevant.

Oh well, don't worry about Wisniewski. He'll pay almost $80,000 for his mistake and sit out a pair of tough road games for the Islanders in Washington and Pittsburgh. But in Islanders Country, he is an overnight sensation. When he returns to the lineup on Saturday for a home game against Colorado, he'll get a hero's welcome.

EXACTLY !!! There is a precedent...one game for an inappropriate gesture. Where is the justification for the extra game? Because it was "sexual" in nature? Because it was more "embarrassing to the league? Hell, I don't see how any misconduct directed at Avery can be considered inappropriate or suspend-able. He's the biggest embarrassment the league has ever seen !!!!

I like Mad Mike's take on this as well:
Quote:

Mike Milbury is tired of Sean Avery.

In fact, the Hockey Night in Canada commentator would love to see the New York Rangers' agitator hang up his skates — and soon.

Avery continues to draw that type of harsh response, even when he's on the receiving end of an obscene gesture.

On Monday, Avery was at his infuriating best when he sprayed Rick DiPetro with snow while the Islanders goalie covered up the puck. The move angered defenceman James Wisniewski, who charged toward Avery before making a gesture to simulate a sex act.

The motion was an attempt to mock Avery, who was suspended for six games in 2008 and ordered to take anger management counselling for his vulgar remarks regarding his former girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert, and her boyfriend Dion Phaneuf — when the defenceman played for the Calgary Flames.

While Milbury condemned Wisniewski's action, calling it "ridiculous and immature," he's bothered by the notion Avery is innocent of any wrongdoing in this case.

"He has been a pretty good player, but he's become a caricature of a professional," Milbury told CBCSports.ca. "It's not good for hockey, it's not good for the image that [the league] is trying to portray. We're not all poster boys for this business and never will be, but this has gone on far too long with his focus on being a distraction and an agitator rather than honing his craft.

"Here we are we're talking about Avery again, not because he made a great backhanded pass to set up the game-winning goal, but because he's part of another unsavoury incident. It's like watching a car wreck. You know it's not going to be pretty but you can't seem to turn away from it until you've had a look."

Wisniewski travelled to the NHL's head office in New York to speak with the league's disciplinarian, Colin Campbell, on Tuesday. A decision is likely to be handed down in a day or two. With the league's attempt to crack down on such behaviour, Milbury anticipates the Islanders defenceman to pay a price for his actions.

"I would fully anticipate a suspension and/or a fine," he said. "Even if he doesn't get fined, he loses his money because he's suspended. There is just no room for that, and the league's pretty clear about it. I would be very surprised if Colin Campbell didn't issue a suspension of a few games or so."

For his part, Avery isn't holding his breath while waiting for any kind of retribution on his behalf.

"It's pretty obvious what the guy was doing," Avery told reporters. "But I'm sure nothing will happen to him because nothing ever happens. It's interesting, he'd get a warning for something like that.

"Can you imagine if I did that? They sent me to rehab the last time I did something. It's crazy."

Milbury wasn't amused when he learned of Avery's plea of innocence.

"Woe is me. I mean, I have no time for it and I've got no time for him. It's too bad that Wisniewski lost his composure and let Avery get to him. If you send a message to everyone in the league, it would be just to ignore him and make him go away sometime, and the sooner the better because it's no fun anymore.

"For whatever reason, the Rangers, the league and Avery continue to march on. There's really nothing you can do. You can't steal the guy's profession. He's signed his contract. They [Rangers] have the obligation to pay the guy, but boy, the sooner he hangs it up and goes to the fashion industry the better for all of us."

Actually....why isn't the league talking to Avery about his comments to those reporters? When he mocked the league for sending him to rehab????

2 games is one too many. Look, it was wrong to do. Funny, but wrong. Does anybody think for a minute that Avery wasn't talking trash the whole time and maybe Wizzer just had enough of it. My preference in those situations is to line a scumbag like Avery up and bury him the next time he touches the puck.

Anyway, this will hurt since we play two of the best offensive players in the world the next two games without him.

Brutal Gervais anyone? Hope its Hillen.

I agree, but I think they'll insert Bruno because of the righty stick.

Hillen looked awful in camp and guess he's on the outside looking in since the org wants to prove the Jurcina signing was a good one by playing him.

Jurcina has impressed me the least so far of all the new acquisitions.

According to Strang's Twitter Hillen will get the start tonight, hopefully Jack plays well cause I'd like to see him back in the lineup.

"clearly it's Rick DiPietro's stupidity that's put the islanders in this situation getting into an altercation when a game was over..." Keith Jones on VS

"But the Coliseum became a repository for all the team's troubles, a convenient scapegoat. There were suggestions that no major free agent ever would set foot in such a decrepit place. We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann

2nd line
Bottom line, any way you cut it, it was a stupid thing for Wisniewski to do, especially being as shorthanded as we are. He fell hook, line, and sinker for Avery's baiting and cost us dearly. I can see us getting smoked the next two games now that we are missing our top two O and D men.

If I was Wisniewski I would have gone with the "Bruno defense" -- my explanation would have been:

"I know it looks like I was suggesting some profane gesture to Sean, but really, I was just asking him if he's seen the movie "Bruno" -- he wasn't sure, so I reminded him about the scene where gay Austrian fashion reporter) "Bruno", you know, channels the spirit of Milli and has simulated oral sex with him?

I only used that scene because I know Sean is very into fashion and writing, and I thought it would have been particularly memorable for him -- you know, to remind him of the movie that I was asking him about....

Looking back, I can see how it would look like I was actually suggesting a profane act directly to Sean, but this was just a little after the whistle movie chat. Honest."

Can the NHL add two more games for implausibility? (One for the story, and one for putting "Bruno" and "defense" in the same explanation.)
