OK everyone, read todays Point Blank.

http://www.islanderspointblank.com/

I don't know who is more clueless, the moron(s) who made the radio decision with Hofstra or the lemmings on Botta's site that think it's a good idea. :dontknow:

I swear I could take 10 boxes of Ex-Lax and 20 bottles of Milk of Magnesia and not crap as big a mess as this franchise and radio decision is.

This has Cholly's incompetence written all over it. Minor league all the way!!!

pretty soon every team will be doing it. I hope Hofstra has enough student volunteers for free radio coverage for the other 29 cheapskate owners.

If your not getting in home in time for the game just get a dvr, record it, and watch the game when your home and settled. Hockey is awful on radio.

But sometimes it's the only connection to the game when you are on the road. Or more importantly is listening to the post game (a good long one) on the long drive home.
I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

Wow. They're even making cheap seats available for the home opener with Loudville. Didn't think it could get any more bleak with this franchise. Thanks Mr. Wang.

The radio deal, if approved by MSG, will just be another punchline for agents to tell their Free Agent players and use as a reason to advise against signing up with the Isles.

I used to believe that ownership had the best intentions at heart for this franchise but no more. They probably looked at the broadcast radius map that somebody from the campus walked over to the NVMC and bought into the idea that they would reach a bigger audience for less money.

Can you imagine Wang sitting down at his desk and having to sign internship completion forms for the students running the broadcast? Snow having to grade scripts minutes before they are going on the air? Granted, that literally will not happen but everyone else in the league will have that impression.

"The Islanders are being broadcast on a college radio station" cannot be spun into something "innovative." It can, however, be used by a potential buyer as a reason for the Isles to move away. It reeks of desperation, as does the availability of Loudville seats for the home opener.

Perception is reality in a case like this and I cannot imagine anyone, other than those within shouting distance of the NVMC or with a Hofstra diploma on their wall perceiving this as a positive step forward for the NYI.

utterly embarrassing....they would be wise not to promote this too much (if at all). They were better off w/o any coverage IMO

AND I think it was only a few days ago that the Isles tweeted that loudville tix would NOT be available for the opener....I guess sales have been lousy. I know personally, any intention I had of going were knocked out when Streit & Okposo went down....perhaps that's a factor. :dontknow:

In the early 80s I could not get radio coverage in Islip, Brentwood, CI, or almost any place else in Suffolk County. Sure as s**t that wasn't Wang's fault.

Not trying to defend the man, just saying radio coverage has always been for the birds with the Isles.

Don't know how many times ranger fans tried to pound that up my butt.

What the Islanders did in July is the biggest factor. It was for me. I've had some sort of ticket plan since 2002 until this year. I could have reached a bit deeper to lay out some money for something but decided it wasn't worth the effort since management was only concerned about the cap. The radio situation is just another sad part of what Wang has done to this franchise.

oops...I guess I didn't read the article in detail. It mentions the game would be called by (possibly) Chris King...and the students would only be doing other stuff. Maybe it's not such a bad thing. Probably better than no coverage at all...so I take my comment above back.

We're not in the 80s anymore. We're in an era where communicating and reaching an audience is easier. I lived in Queens in the 1980s and never had a problem getting Islander games on radio. Now NO ONE can hear them. So making the comparison is silly.

This really is a joke.

No offense to the college kids who are going to get something on their resume. And excuse the tone in the rest of this post. I read Botta's article and "unique" and "fascinating" is not what i would use to describe this "deal".
It's yet another embarrassment.

Bad enough Wang's son in law dreamed up a blog box to get favorable media coverage
in exchange for media credentials to non professional writers...
But for a professional franchise to have radio coverage that will be covered by college students sidelines reports including interviews...I can ONLY imagine the players frustrations...you know...the REAL feelings
they would never share publicly.

What a friggen joke.

2015 is when the lease ends. The fatheaded bastid didn't get his real estate package the way he wanted it so everything gets dumbed down further until he gets it or sells.

Last year, prior to JT's first game when we were looking forward to the season, Charles Wang had his little pout nonsense about the TOH and cast a cloud over the team.

And Sybo, I love Chris King...great guy, great announcer, fun to listen to but every other aspect of the production will not be professional and I don't want to hear some 18 year old asking stupid rhetorical sports questions. Yes we'll mostly be watching in person or on TV but don't underestimate radio. Everyone drives and if there's hockey on and your team is playing, you don't want to get home to "check the score"...you have that burning desire as a fan to HEAR IT LIVE.

Maybe this will be a good thing...maybe it will be interesting to hear the reaction when some kid asks Trent Hunter, "So uh Trent, just wondering...on your drivers license, what does it say for hair color?"

Thanks Charles Wang, thanks yet again.

Wang has said F YOU to the fans so the fans will say F YOU back more than ever and the barn will be more empty than ever and that's saying something with their history.

If they have to sell discounted tix for the home opener, can you imagine what it will be like on a weeknight in January vs Carolina?

Same here Mike. I've had enough and for the first time since 1972 have no desire to support this circus. For you to give up seasons means things really suck.

The NY Post ripped Cholly for being cheap in their season previews today -

Islanders fans, held hostage by an owner whose only lingering interest in the team appears to be as an instrument for a land grab, still largely refuse the franchise the apathy it has richly earned. The team, attempting to sell cheapness in the name of patience, spent practically nothing this summer to immediately improve upon a 26th-overall finish. And yet the loyalists, burned by the ruinous impatience of the Mike Milbury years, actually are mostly content to draft and wait, although they may be waiting only for the team to leave town. - J Greenberg

Brooks picked them to finish 28th and said "Quiet, Wang has the floor", a reference to being at the salary cap floor.

Since he bought the team, it's been all about the land. I wish the town would give him something, rebuild the arena, let him keep his piece, and hope he sells to someone who has a freaking clue how to run a hockey franchise.

Agreed.
I've been saying all along, I wish some of the alumni had the balls to speak up instead of murmuring on the golf course and choosing their words wisely about this owner when interviewed.

We still have a great majority of fans who believe all the BS he's been selling.
I don't despise Wang as a person. I despise him as the owner of my favorite sports team
and unfortunately the passion comes out harsh on message board posts that probably has
fellow fans thinking I want to read his name on an obituary.

Far from it.

Just for the record. Part of my job (I work for a PR firm which specializes in radio) is to gauge stations and their broadcast capabilities.

No matter what any literature a station may be putting out which shows their broadcast radius, the telling sign of how powerful an FM station's signal is can be measured by two things:

1. Signal power
2. HAAT of their broadcast tower (Height Above Average Terrain)

For WRHU, their signal power is 470 watts and their HAAT is 57 meters. For an FM station that equates to an average broadcast radius of about 20 miles, given their location and surrounding area and even the weather.

Take a look at where their tower is located:

WRHU tower

By stark contrast, the AM signal of WFAN (which I can get down here in DC on a good day) broadcasts at 50,000 watts and has a HAAT of 167 meters out there on High Island.

WFAN tower

Now I don't know if this is even remotely interesting to anyone. I just jumped at the chance to talk about the Isles at work. For me though, seeing the pictures of the towers and the power behind them eliminates any questions about how "innovative" this may be.
