I have not renewed my center ice package this year. Just can't see paying that much to watch the Isles look this bad. I will watch the games in October during the free preview.

pay for the Fox Sports package....you'll get most of the games for, what, $4.99/mo?

according to the latest, Chris King's Isles radio return for play-by-play this time will be dumbed down by inexperience doing color.
MORE people learning on the job. NO, not for high school or college sports.
But for a professional team.

And they effen wonder why some of us vent. Unreal.

sure, this sh!t is embarrassing but really, what can we do? we can cancel centre ice packages, cancel season tickets, boycott, petition, and so on, but the fans can't do anything about it. bottom line, this may be islanders country, but this is Wang's world.

See ya at the picket line :disgraced:

In all reality, all Wang has done for this team that can be deemed positive is buying it before it went under. Since then, he has done nothing but run a micky mouse organization that is the laughing stock of the NHL. I don't care if some think that he saved the organazation or not....he is an idiot and needs to sell the team.

Why don't everyone give it a shot and see if it's any good before pu puing it. It may actually be entertaining. I'd be more worried about the signal power. I remember when I used to go to games and not being able to get their radio signal even in the Coliseum parking lot after a game.

As long as I can get the post game show on the way home and the signal lasts as long as the show.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

I have a headache....must be from my eyes bleeding after just reading this. :disgraced:

Maybe the kids will be good.....maybe not. Wang's innovating the way a Milstein runs on the cheap. He surely got a FULL write-off on the lockerroom job, as he needed good press I'm sure. The payroll is a joke. The GM and coach are what they are....not something an aspiring team would dream of but what a lame duck would settle for.

But there sure is a lot of polishing on this turd to be done.

I just watch the players....the only thing "Islander" left in this franchise.

Do we still have equipment managers and trainers and a medical person on staff or was that cut, too?

I did get the post game show but I was still in Nassau when it finished so I couldn't tell you how far it will cover.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

This just in from Botta

"Sidd Finch: “Any chance the Shinnecocks have put in a bid for the smoke signal rights?”

Might even reach further out than the radio station.

Big difference. 18 NHL shot for a kid who went through NHL camp and has been playing competitive hockey for 12 years or more vs an 18 year old kid who decided within the last 2 years that they want a career in broadcasting and has little to no experience in that field.
At best, the kids on air will have no more than a few years experience and anyone would agree that they have no place on a professional broadcast no matter how "cool" it is.

If your not getting in home in time for the game just get a dvr, record it, and watch the game when your home and settled. Hockey is awful on radio.

Hockey is great on radio. At least, it used to be.

Not everyone has 2-3 hours to watch a game. I often would listen to the games on radio when I jogged, did laundry, made dinner etc. and especially while running errands in the car. Can't do that now as the signal doesn't reach my home.

Grew up playing street hockey while listening to the games on the radio. That's how I became a fan. Do laptops have heat warmers these days?

Hofstra University Radio to Become New York Islanders Flagship Station

Written by Matthew Coller
Saturday, 09 October 2010

The New York Islanders finally found a radio station with the signal strength to provide game casts to listeners, but the choice is raising eyebrows. Radio Hofstra University (WRHU) will now carry Islanders games. The fact that the team is going with a college radio station is unique on its own, but the most of the head-scratching is over the amount of participation during broadcasts by Hofstra university students.

Chris Botta, who covers the Islanders for Islanders Point Blank, said the team will keep broadcaster Chris King, but allow Hofstra students to cover intermissions, sideline reporting and even possibly serve as color commentators. Students would also run all the technical and audio aspects.

The Islanders competition, the Rangers and New Jersey Devils, are on two of New York City’s biggest stations ESPN Radio and CBS-owned WFAN. BusinessInsider.com columnist Adam Fusfeld said of the move, “This is a pretty embarrassing situation for the Islanders…it’s just one more reason the Islanders need to take the first train out of Long Island.”

While Fusfeld’s words are harsh, he isn’t the only one sounding off, Eric Mirlis, who used to work public relations for the Islanders wrote a seething blog post ripping the team’s decision to use college students, in the post he said:

“Look at every analyst on every broadcast you watch. The overwhelming majority are former players or coaches, who have a knowledge of the game that is more intricate and in depth than anyone really cares to realize. I’ll always be of the opinion that a former player or coach should be in that spot, especially one that has ties to the team that fans can grab onto and relate to on a personal level. You will also find the occasional media member as the analyst. This is how Chris King originally got into the Islander broadcasting biz, how Sherry Ross became the Devils radio analyst and how Suzyn Waldman earned her way onto Yankee broadcasts. None of them played the game professionally, but all had an insight into the game that came with years of being around the game and all deserved the opportunity they got to show their stuff on the air.”

A quality radio or TV broadcast can be a major asset to a sports franchise (think about how much the YES Network benefits the New York Yankees), so it’s difficult to say the quality of a college station’s game cast will be anywhere near the level of ESPN or WFAN. Not difficult, impossible. Not to mention the move takes away potential jobs for out-of-work media professionals who have the ability to produce a broadcast. The Islanders’ move essentially drives down salaries for those working in radio by saying, “why should we pay a pro when a college student can do it for free (or super cheap).”

This is the problem newspapers have run into over the past 10 years or so and the state of print journalism is sad to say the least. It is understood by all that the move about cutting costs, but if AHL teams who draw 4,000 a night can afford to pay professionals, many are going to ask why an NHL team can not.

I apologize for getting off topic, but I dodn think this was worthy of its own thread. Did anyone notice the 'eye-candy' at the Caps game last night. I came in during the 3rd period and everytime the camera shot a closeup of the glass, there were good looking females present. A blond behind the caps bench...a couple of brunettes in the first row of seats. Am I crazy or did anyone else see it. I've never noticed it before, so was it just a coincidence? Was I tired? Just curious.

Not sure if anyone has been listening to the radio feed but the Hofstra guy doing color and interviews isn't that bad. I'm going to say so far I am pleasantly surprised about the radio show.

You can call me Joe.
Besides the tacky content wrapped around it (Flash! Aa-aaah.... and what feels like 20 minutes of Hofstra basketball soundbytes per period), the broadcast is fine while Chris King is calling the game -- as long as you're within 20 miles or so of Hofstra.

Geographically speaking, I would have to give this deal a C- because a large chunk of the listening audience on Long Island is outside their broadcast radius. Futile attempt to listen to the beginning of the game on my way home (mid Suffolk) --
