According to Bob McKenzie's twitter feed, the Islanders claimed RW Michael Grabner off waivers from Vancouver.

Happy Birthday to him.

NICE pick up!.

Kid's a project with talent, speed. former 1st rounder, same year Okposo was drafted.

Why not give it a shot. There were alot of teams looking to place a claim. Surprised Toronto didn't nab him.

A little help please...these guys on two-way deals need to clear waivers?

This is a great move, when he was drafted I remember a lot of the scouting reports comparing him to Martin Havlat. With our lack of scoring ability he could be this years Matt Moulson. He has tons of speed and should fit in nicely with our style of play, only downfall is his lack of defensive prowess but imo if you look at every other team in the league not every player is a two way forward, I think we can afford to have one thats strictly offense. Next move: claim Ryan Parent off waivers from Nashville.

Nice pick up, has potential. At the very least, we are moving towards a younger faster lineup. Which is, in my humble opinion, a good thing.

Welcome to the NEW New York Islanders.

I have no idea how this will all turn out, but I am once again psyched for the season to begin. New young faces and the eternal pre-season of hope.

Hell, two or three more moves and we can kiss Weight, Sim and __________ (fill in the blank) good bye.

I think we will be a team that is fun to watch and you never know. No predictions, just happy that we are taking a different path. And based on the fiasco of the last few years of bringing in washed up old has been nothings, this is the road we need to take.

I get the whole low-risk/high reward with this type of player, but dont we have enough of these guys already? Schremp, Parenteau, and now Grabner. The chances of him being a Moulson, who needs to prove he isn't a flash-in-the-pan player as it is, must be slim, yes? Although I do like putting the Hilberts of the world on the Bridge where they belong, I fear the current roster is getting even more diluted in talent.

I know but this is a good problem to have. We finished 5th worst last year, we have all these prospects that failed to show much in camp (DiBenedetto, Haley, Hisey, Joensuu, Marcinko, Rakhshani etc.) Why not take a flyer on a former 1st round pick with skill, speed and who's only flaw is defensive zone coverage? Schremp was knocked for that to and he slowly improved when given a chance.

Also, maybe this lights a fire under certain guys at the bridge to either step up or be shipped out.
While I bark that they are too cheap to spend on a top 6 forward short term, a move like this is a no brainer (IMO) for a team in our situation.

Waivers has nothing to do with one-way or two-way contracts Sybo. Tavares is wavier exempt for another 81 NHL games or 2-3 years even though he is on a one-way contract.

A player's waiver exemption period is based on two different factors....one is NHL games played and the other is years from when his first Pro contract counted. Most players have 3 years or 162 games but someone like Tavares who signed at 19 might have 4 years but I'd have to look at the CBA again to find the formula.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, that sounds right. I think because Hilbert is a veteran, the two way contract only means two different salaries based on NHL or AHL.

Waived still means he's under contract with the Islanders if he clears waivers, which means he'll still be an Islander(:P) but can now play at bridgeport. Now the question is if the Islanders need him during the year, can someone pick him up at 1/2 the salary when he's called back?

First round draft picks don't get released if they are any good. This doesn't excite me one bit. Another story in Newsday about Paranteu being this year's Moulson. For once I'd like to see a story about us picking up a sure thing instead of all of these reclamation projects! Geeesh!!! How many of these types of players can you have on one freakin' team?????

Absolutely. But given that we know we won't be spending above cap floor, something like this is a no brainer. Not earth shattering news. He's a project, we have alot of deficiencies but if he works out this year or next, great, if not, we didn't lose anything and it's not like our other "prospects" would be missing icetime.

We had a crappy pre-season and we had to bring in veterans on tryouts to have enough vets at split squad games thanks to Wang's moronic idea of taking the goddamn team to China which ultimately blew up in his face.

Isles claim Michael Grabner; place Andy Hilbert on waivers

12:42 PM By Katie Strang

The Islanders have claimed Austrian winger Michael Grabner off waivers.

Grabner, who was waived by Florida yesterday, was selected in the first round--14th overall--in the 2006 draft by the Vancouver Canucks. He finished with five goals and 6 assists in 20 games for Vancouver last season before being dealt to the Panthers this June in the Keith Ballard deal.

"He's highly-skilled, a great skater and very creative offensively," General Manager Garth Snow said when reached by phone. "For us it was an opportunity to add a top-six talent and provide him an opportunity for that talent to flourish."

A worthwhile gamble for the Islanders, a la Rob Schremp, who was claimed off waivers from Edmonton almost exactly one year ago.

"It worked for us last year," Snow said.

"He's definitely a player we've watched over the past few years and been impressed with at certain times. This seemed like a good opportunity to see what he can do."
