Isles sign defenseman Milan Jurcina to 1-year extension

Wednesday January 5, 2011 8:36 PM By Katie Strang

The Islanders have signed defenseman Milan Jurcina to a one-year extension woth $1.6 million.

"He's a big body, well-liked by his teammates and a calming presence to our blue line,'" general manager Garth Snow said when reached by telephone Wednesday night. ''To me our troubles started when [Andrew MacDonald] and Jurcina went down.'"

Snow said the team was intent on locking up Jurcina before the trade deadline February 28. Jurcina has two goals and two assists in 19 games for the Islanders. The 27-year-old missed five weeks this season with a hamstring injury.

'"He had a good experience here the first half of the season and it worked out for both sides", Snow said.

1 year is fine. There is still plenty of room for deHaan to make the lineup next season.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

Agree that 1yr is fine...i think that'll give us 6 Dman signed before next season starts. They could keep Hillen or Gervis as depth dmen or sign another Dman...either way Dehann will be able to get his feet wet in the AHL without the pressure of having to make the big club.

Hillen and Gervais should not be anywhere near any NHL team let alone ours.

Jurcina for 1 year is fine. Probably not a "great" signing as some fans on botta's blog are reveling.
Not a "terrible" signing ether. It's a good signing and I hope that there's negotiations going on with Moulson.

Next year, (should we dare to dream things might change)
we have under contract:
Streit
Eaton
Mottau
MacDonald
Hamonic
and now Jurcina

Not a very good defense. I don't care how much some folks look at it and hope for BEST case seasons
out of all of them. It's an ok defense and I don't know if de Haan will have enough muscle to play and
be a factor in the NHL. We still need another good body but of course the building has a force field that repels free agents.

When are they saying Mr. Streit will return to action?

When are they saying Mr. Streit will return to action?

They aren't, so I would assume next season or March of this year.

If it's March, wouldn't it be best if they keep him out until next season?

And not use him in the playoffs?

We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann

Thats why I figure next season...I think at this point March is a very best case scenario. From what I've read on the internet Streit is rehabbing in Switzerland and hasn't done much skating. Maybe if the Isles had a shot at post-season play he'd be a little more aggressive about getting back regardless if he's 100%....IDK.

Look at KO...he's been skating with equipment on and there is still no real time table on his return...hopefully the end of this month but could be February.

They traded Roloson, so maybe there is your answer.

I wonder if Katie Strang and anyone else who has media credentials bothered to ask Jurcina how he felt about the "BUILDING" when he signed that extension.

Nobody gives a $h!+ what Jurcina thinks about the building. He couldn't stick with Boston or Washington or Columbus last year. He's lucky to be in the nhl. No one asks a guy who is nothing more than a depth signing on a halfway decent team what they think of the organization. What they ask him is, "how does it feel to play against nhl talent every night knowing you don't have much to play with on your own team in that hole of an arena."

We saw all this crying on this site because Wishart is now in his 3rd nhl organization. But people have been excited about extending Jurcina (on his 4th organization) to a 1 year deal?

All this really is is a depth signing. Nothing more. Yes, he's played OK at times this year, but he's missed long stretches (which is his m.o.) and in the long run he isn't all that.

All that Jurcina is good for is he makes it a little harder for Gervais to get icetime.
I miss these :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: and want more of them

1 down 2 to go

Konopka & Moulson should get new deals

I love what the Islanders are doing. anyone who likes to follow sports management realizes that Snow is adding organizational depth and is building a team with a top priority of chemistry.

Jurcina is young adds toughness has a decent shot. the Islanders struggled really bad when he was out of the line up, Milan returns and the team has played with more tenacity and confidence-

It was a joke.
