Mark Eaton will undergo surgery on right hip; out indefinitely
15 m ago By Katie Strang

Veteran defenseman Mark Eaton, who flew back to Long Island yesterday for a medical evaluation, requires surgery on his right hip and is out indefinitely.

The 33-year-old is the latest loss to a blue line that has been absolutely decimated by injuries this season.

Top defenseman Mark Streit has yet to play this season because of a pre-season shoulder injury, Mike Mottau underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip late last month and is done for the year, and Radek Martinek is on injured reserve with an injured left wrist.

Milan Jurcina, Andrew MacDonald, Bruno Gervais, and Jack Hillen have also all missed time at some point this season. Travis Hamonic is the defenseman on the current roster with the longest streak of games played; the rookie will play in his 18th straight game tonight.

And compound that with the fact that the Islanders recently traded James Wisniewski, a key off-season acquisition, to Montreal for a compensatory second round pick and conditional fifth-rounder.

No word yet on whether the Islanders will call up a defenseman for the remainder of their longest road trip of the season. Tonight they play the 3rd of a five-game 11-day tour of the Western Conference

I can just hear the "INJURY" excuses flowing from Garth Snow's mouth to mask the incompetent front office.

I mentioned this in another thread almost 5 weeks ago.
Other teams employ strength and conditioning coaches with far better credentials than
the one we have...one Jesse Demers.
But we're the Islanders, we hire who's affordable. We don't pay but end up paying big time.

Fire his ass.

Hello Calvin.

deHaan is the captain of his Oshawa jr team and highly unlikely he'd be called away midseason.

Steve, I agree, I've been saying this for months among my 'hockey' friends. Why do the Isles have the most games missed per player than any other team for the last 3 to 4 seasons and no one bothers to look any further than the players themselves?

I would imagine that if we added up the amount of games missed by each player that's been sidelined over the last 4 seasons, even excluding DP, we'd still lead the league in "Games Missed per Player Injured" by almost a 2-to-1 margin.

How has no one looked at why the players are being injured? Strength and conditioning being a major factor in the ability to withstand the abuse of such a physical game, when player after player is going out due to injury, a responsible GM would look at every angle to find if there's a common cause or if it's just mere coincidence. But.... I guess I just answered my own question, "a responsible GM".

I know.

Over the last several years, yes. we are at the top.
Canucks have had alot of bad luck....devs are up there this year.

But I started another thread calling for Demers to be fired because his experience in
working with "professional" athletes is probably the lowest in the NHL.
Just ties into EVERY hiring Wang has made. Most likely to hire them on the cheap.

When I went around and looked at other nhl teams, I see better experienced staffs
and in todays sport which is faster and injuries are inevitable, recovery and conditioning are
more important than ever and it plays a huge role preventing some but not all injuries.
Otherwise, there'd be no need to fill that position.

I saw a thread that was closed on another site (hf) questioning the same thing.
terrible job of moderating. It's a valid argument and debate. You'd think Islanders fans would stand up and demand more experienced people get hired in all aspects of hockey ops.

Instead we see every failed player who couldn't develop HERE go elsewhere and find their game. (see Bergenheim, Tambellini)

Strength and conditioning coach/specialist is essential in todays sports.
You do not expect to win a nascar race with a less experienced pit crew.

Common sense.

No offense intended but putting aside what the fans want, how about what the players want? Why do none of them see this pattern and make some noise? Even if it's not them but their agent? Can't get the big bucks when renewal time comes around if my star guy goes out with an injury and only a half a season left on his contract. Can't get paid if my guy goes out in the middle of the season to end his career. Where is the voice of reason from those that have a position to actually get change on the to-do list and pressure the organization to make it happen?

It seems once someone voices a concern, they're traded. Witt, Guerin, Rollie (going by his looks), possibly Wiz (contract talks get ugly? Did he bring up the lack of depth?)?

Right now I don't think anyone has any complaints. Too dangerous.

"But the Coliseum became a repository for all the team's troubles, a convenient scapegoat. There were suggestions that no major free agent ever would set foot in such a decrepit place. We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann

WTH is going on with this team. Has anyone ever heard of so many hip injuries in one franchise? This is ridiculous.

There is no way that this single injury keeps coming up and there isn't an issue with the team's training plans.

Does anyone else remember the Yankees firing their trainer because several players kept getting I believe it was hamstring issues. Well, that took the Yankees a total of about 2-3 months to move on. We've been going on "Groin and Hip Central" now for the better part of 5 seasons.

WTF.

I'd think it is more dangerous not to. Think about it...speak up, get traded and save your groin/hip in the process.
