one more thing on connolly. its not like he's an old man. hes an 18 year old kid and kids tend to heal up quicker than say a 28 year old goaltender.

that is true...connolly has that going for him..atleast he isn't a goaltender. he doesn't have to dodge pucks from the net after turnovers in which most cases he himself created..

Exactly. A hip injury like this heals up after time and rest, and from what I've read, he's not gonna have too many problems in all likelihood, especially since he's not playing like a manic goalie with Tourettes. If he's projected as a could be #3 but for the injury, we could land another coup like we may have with stuck-in-the-U.S.S.R Petrov (if he's as good as billed on N.A. ice).

The Injury, The injury - The guy had a muscle injury...a hip flexor to be exact, its not even close to the type of injury DP had. AND to top it off, its been DP's knees that have kept him from playing. Would you pass on the kid if he had a hammy injury?

This is from a blog on ESPN that you need to be an "insider" for.

Quote:

Brett Connolly, a right winger from the Prince George Cougars, was slotted in the first group. Connolly, ranked No. 3 on Central Scouting's final list of North American skaters, was obviously the player whose performance in the testing was of the greatest interest after missing the bulk of the season with a hip injury.

The good news is that Connolly was able to get through the bike portions -- the Wingate and VO2 testing -- and the vertical and standing broad jumps with no problem. If he had limped away it could have ended up costing him millions, not to mention slots in the first round. He managed to walk away seemingly none the worse for wear.

It's not a done deal. Connolly said that at least five teams have asked him to come in for exams from their doctors, and that number is sure to grow. Said one amateur scouting director: "We have the MRIs sent out by his agent but we have to have our own guys look at him. He did well enough [in the combine testing] but that only gives you a look at where he is now. A closer look and maybe something shows that he could have more problems down the line."

The consensus at the combine is that Connolly is a surefire top-10 pick and a likely top-5 in the entry draft if all his team physicals go well. That teams are talking about Connolly in this bracket after such limited play this year is a testament to past performances in his rookie season with PG. One scout's take: "As an under-ager [with the Canadian team at the 2009 under-18s] in Fargo he had a great tournament, arguably their most promising player, ahead of a lot of older players who were pretty good prospects. That's a pretty big feat, considering they were all second-year juniors and he had one year with the weakest team in the Dub [WHL]."

Connolly seemed irritated by questions from the media about his hip, but that's understandable.

"It's the first thing that every team asked me about when I went in for interviews," he said. Get used to it, it's going to be that way in any remaining team interviews he does. It'll be that way when teams fly him in between now and draft day. It will be that way when a team drafts him on a Friday night in June. It will be that way when he reports for his first pro training camp. When you manage to play only 16 regular-season games, that's just the way it is.

What Connolly said Friday morning is what he's told all teams interviewing him: He doesn't need physiotherapy anymore and he has a stretching routine (including yoga sessions) that should head off any flare-ups.

If he's there at 5, I think you have to take him. I'd like to have Fowler or Gudbranson first but if they are gone I like Connolly, we need more skill up front.

If we take Conolly..this draft was a failure. plain and simple. Great kid, great attitude..but that injury alone would scare me off..

damn dude give the kid a chance. a lot of people said that 2 years ago when we drafted bailey. if fowler and gudbranson are gone i wouldn't mind them taking connolly over gormley. They could always trade down and take el nino. oddly enough i haven't heard of any of the top 5 guys visiting florida. maybe a trade is in the works?

Sure he'll get a chance...on another team..We need defense.

I agree we need some defense but at this point unless we can get a draft prospect that can start making an impact this year or next but I would also says we are light on forward prospects. Who have the Isles drAfted lately that is a threat to score 25 goals that is in juniors or the minors? I think they need to get us a top D man via free agencey this off season and draft some offense. I think we have 4-5 D prospects that will play in the NHL next year at the latest. Add striet, hillen and Amac and we could have a decent 7 Dmen.

Aries..we have to build from the blue line up..nobody who is making big dollars who puts up big numbers and is a free agent wants to come to the Islanders..were seeing it time and time again. So we have no choice but to draft smarter than everyone else. You say "decent" decent doesn't get you out of the first round of the playoffs. You want a "dynamic" set of defensemen, guys who can handle the puck get around the forecheck and were also gonna need someone that is going to quarterback our powerplay..Draft a guy like Fowler, Gudbranson or Gormley you get guys who can do all of that..

You NEVER draft on need.....and if we're smart we won't even SEE a defenseman we draft play for at minimum one year, maybe three. If Connoly is cleared medically, he's the third best pick pre-injury talent-wise, while those defensemen are solid picks. Just nab BPA and call it a day. Even is he's Russian. I don't want to see him leave camp heading to Uniondale unless he's amazing or better (another Bailey move to sell tix).

If we needed a fighter last year and drafted one.....

If we needed a goalie last year and drafted one.....

You take the best player available or you're baking a cake by adding one egg a year into 5 year old flower.

If you expect Campbell or Gormley, you won't be disappointed if they do something stupid. I'd love Gudbranson, but I think that stupid point we got in the finale hurts us here and he goes before our turn.

Should be a fun draft because there will be alot of activity in terms of trades.
With the cap going up a little over 2 million and with the players association agreeing to extend the CBA. There's a positive vibe. No matter what happens with our Isles and their moves, good or bad. I think this could be a memorable off season for the NHL. Should be plenty of teams fans buzzing.

Gudbranson. Man, I hope he's there at 5. We want him, we need him AND he's the best player available at that spot.

I think every pick of every round of every draft is different, so to make a blanket statement like "you draft on need" or "you take the best player available" doesn't work, especially in the NHL. Maybe the NFL, where a guy can be a strong safety, nickel, whatever. But not in the NHL.

What if only to make the point (and it is a what if only, it is obviously not us):

What if you have a legit starting goalie and a very good backup, but you are weak on the left wing. Your first pick is mid first round. There is a goalie and a left wing sitting there. The goalie is "the best player available". The left wing is highly rated. You don't pick again until the end of the second round.

Sorry, you take the wing. "Need" pick.

You can do this for every pick you have and it will change.

I'm not big on blanket statements when it comes to drafting, there are way too many variables involved.

I agree 1000%!!!!! A young hungry d man who wants to come here and was blown away by our history. He has been described as playing with snarl and being great captain material. It is a no brainer IMO. If he is there at #5 we should pick Gudbranson in a New York minute!!! :isles:

You know we'll trade KO and our pick to move up to 3 so we can be guaranteed to get him.

I hope not, but we are the NY Islanders, the ones who make NHL people around the globe shake their heads in disbelief on draft day. I won't be surprised by anything this team could do tonight.

I'd make that deal in a second to move up to #2 and take Hall...

Ok, so here we are.

Oilers with 1st overall take Taylor Hall
Bruins with 2nd take Tyler Seguin.

Panthers are up next...
this could affect us...that's if you believe in hype, scripts etc...

remember, Charles effen Wang is at the head of our draft table.
