So, I was bored and started to think about what I want Garth to do if we do find ourselves with the #1 pick at the draft.

After some thinking, I have come to the conclusion that if we happen to acquire the #1 pick again this year, I would actually like to see Garth trade it down to #3.

Before I get assaulted for saying that, let me explain why....

I think most of us would agree that the team needs another real blue-chip defensive prospect (other than Hamonic and de Haan). Saying that, it is also the general consensus that we want Cam Fowler. I am also very confident that neither Carolina nor Boston will pass on the offensive talent available in Seguin/Hall (the projected #1 and #2 on most draft boards). So let's say that we get the #1 pick. We could definitely trade down to #3, get something more out of it, and end up with Fowler in the end. And even if that goes wrong and we don't get Fowler, I wouldn't really complain about getting Seguin/Hall if we got a good little addition from trading down.

Just throwing it out there.

Not a bad idea........but to me, I'd stay right where we are unless we're blown away with a trade offer and select whoever the best player is regardless of position.

Let's face it we need everything.......offensive, defensive.....you name it.

puckhead, that right there is the wise philosophy of any sane GM.
Always always take the BEST player available regardless of position.

You don't get cute or creative or cocky unless your name is Lou Lamourillo.

but...

WE'RE ALL ISLANDERS

I'm a scared.

Put the Cup Back in Our Lobby Where It Belongs

If we want Fowler (haven't seen enough clips to make any kind of intelligent appraisal myself), it seems pretty obvious we have to trade places with Toronto and finish with the 2d worst record overall, to protect against the possibility that one of the "better" teams with a marginally better season record will win the lottery and push us back one place in the first round. Doesn't sound like Fowler will be on the board past the third pick.

We have to draft one. No arena would sign with us or resign with us due to our arena.

"But the Coliseum became a repository for all the team's troubles, a convenient scapegoat. There were suggestions that no major free agent ever would set foot in such a decrepit place. We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann

The good play of the Islanders as of Apr 6th have taken the Islanders out of the draft lottery with 4 games to go. Even though it shows we are tied with Carolina in points, TSN has the tie breaker in the Isles favor moving them to 25th in the league with a game in hand on the 'canes.

Hopefully Carolina overtakes us and moves into 25th. Tampa and Florida are 2 points back but we have 2 more victories than either so for them to overtake us they'd pretty much have to win the rest of their games.

With 4 games to go it looks like we'll be picking 6th which we may take Erik Gudbranson (D 6'3" 195lb) or more likely target a mid 1st round D pick and trade down using pick #6 as leverage in a trade scenario.
I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

Damn........If only we could have lost more consistently.

Since we're unlikely to get an impact player at #6, I'd definitely look to trade down and accumulate more assets. If we pick at #6, whoever it is won't be an impact player and likely wouldn't make the team next year.

Tom, isn't it the case.

It also seems teams 6,7,8 are all trying to get the Rags into the playoffs. I bet we do our part by beating Montreal tonight, further helping their cause and weakening our chances at a good pick.

We really could've used these wins leading up to the Olympic break.

On the plus side there is 6.2% we could draft 2nd but of course we could be pushed back to 7th but 6/7th shouldn't matter that much.

If Fowler. Gudbranson, Seguin, and Hall are all gone when the isles pick....Then the isles should trade down to 8 or 9 and take Nino Niederreiter or grow a set and take him at 6 or 7.

Nino is 6-2 200. Plays tough and has scoring ability. I watched him play on a weak swiss team in the world juniors and the kid was a force.

Please dont take Vladimir Tarasenko. Hes got all the talent in the world but according to scouts takes nights off...We dont need that crap.

We really could use a D man but Niederrieter(LW) looks to be the real deal...

Niederreiter boasts good size, and all ready knows how to use it to protect the puck etc.. His balance is impeccable leaving him dominant against the wall. Moreover, like many WHL players, Niederreiter plays with some serious grit and never stops competing or bringing the intensity. This is evidenced by his great play in big games. Finally, and this is what really sets Nino apart from many other prospects is how creative he is with the puck for a big guy. He has good hands, and is a proven goal scorer at every level. All his skills, coupled with his character makeup will make Nino an attractive winger for any NHL GM come draft day.

I can't find a review for Erik Gudbranson. :dontknow: can anyone?

After Hall, Seguin, Fowler and even Gudbranson, I get the feeling its a big crap shoot. That's why I feel we needed to get in the top 4.

It doesn't matter whether we draft #1 or #8.

At the end of the day, el cheapo Wang is the owner and Garth Snow the GM.

Yeah, add Hall or Seguin to this lineup next year.

That mean we make the playoffs? Gordon is still the damn coach. You, the same guy who cannot manage a clock, cannot play to his players strengths and forces a system of fail down the franchises throats as if he has this sense of entitlement.
The same coach who had a line going great to start the year and F'd it up because he had a hunch.

I don't want to hear from anyone now that we are winning lately. I love it. they need this confidence for whoever will be here next season. But a few months ago I said, this team with zero pressure on it, when facing some teams in the thick of the playoff race could surprise a few people.
Ironically, I read Botta's entry this morning and he pretty much said the same thing.
Historically, these things happen in hockey. Doesn't mean Gordon is a great coach or our guys are having a great season or it's a drastic improvement etc etc.
WHY???

Where were they all when we had those 3 games in 4 nights earlier in the season and Gordon was toying with the lineup, not calling timeouts when they gave up 2-3 goals?
Where was the gameplay then? Where was the effort and the results?

Don't ever forget. This years team had less than half the man games lost than last season.
They also had Roloson. Not 2 career backups. But I peruse the boards and I read some fellow fans thinking it's an improvement. To me, the improvement is with certain players stepping up under the circumstances. Not a team improvement.

So from here on out begins the dreaming. The dreaming that Wang and Snow have finally got it and THIS will be the off season where NO head scratching moves will be made via the draft and free agency.

Yeah right...look at their track record and wake up from your dreams.
That said, I will dream along with. Why not...cant hurt right?

;) :P

Carolina plays Tampa tonight, I believe. Its time to hope for 3 point games. Also, Tampa and Florida close out the season against each other. Again - hoping for 3 point games as we play Pittsburgh and NJ fighting for the division lead.

We need to lose in regulation starting tonight.
