A high pick/great player drafted means someone is going to lose a job next year. The supporting players aka Bergensuckwhenitmattersmost have been picking things up for job security for next year. Exactly the kind of players that should be dumped. That's right Bergie, you'd barely see 4th line minutes for me if I were coach. I vaguely remember him having a hot streak at the end of last year too. One thing we will likely never know is if his play would translate into the playoffs. Ahh, to be an Islander and young... |

The only people that wanna see these games lost are us fans, the GM, and the scouts. No player or coach wants to lose any game..."meaningless" or not...that's just reality. These guys aren't thinking about the draft when they are out there playing...even the "core" guys who know they will be here for the long haul...so let's not get our panties in a twist. It's just the way it is unfortunately. The only legit way to try and "throw" some games if is Garth insists on sitting some key players to call up some AHL guys to get some "experience" wink wink |

I agree... Any fan who actively wants or roots against their team misses the point of competition. I'd rather have this team, the team we have right now, get some confidence as a unit and see that they were actually pretty close to making the playoffs. We don't start 1-9 and we don't havea 7 game losing streak and we are right in it. And that is what a rebuild is all about. Not getting close and saying "f*&k it" and lose the remaining 10 players because some 18 year old is doing well against a bunch of kids. JT was a little different since we've heard his name since he was in the 8th grade, but these guys are not the same. We are NOT, going to go from a 1st round pick and win the Conference the next year. It is not going to happen. There are going to be "steps". This is the first step. We HAVE to take that step eventually and I'm tired of waiting for it. I'd rather lose on the last day of the season and miss a playoff spot by 1 point than suck all year and get a #3 pick. I'm sure I'm in the minority on this board, but that is how it should be going. If you don't like the plan, there are plenty of other NY teams that will gladly give you your fix of high priced free agents and playoff games. Wanting your own team to lose......f#@king got to be kidding me... |

Seguin goes to Edmonton, he's the only one I haven't seen drop or at least have some question marks attached to him. He's no Tavares and this draft is THIN compared to last year. It is all a crap shoot and no team is gonna lose on purpose. If they did I would have to question their pride as professionals and we would never have the ability to do anything as a team, IMO. Losers are losers, period. Play the games, play hard right to the wire and let the chips fall where they may. Especially in this draft, and this is only my humble opinion, there is not a lot of difference between the top 3 forwards (after Seguin) and the top 3 D. Get a guy that fits your needs, like a togh D-Man like Gudbranson who is compared to Pahneuf. It will be what it will be. It's not like the Devils choosing that scumbag Kirk Mueller because they won meaningless games and the Pens got Lemieux. It's not that heavy a draft at all. To me, let's get a serviceable player or two. Far more important than this draft is how we acquire key FA's in the offseason. |

Yeah, and they look like they will draft a stud to play with Stamkos and Hedman and make deep playoff runs in the next few years. Meanwhile, back on the Island...the Islanders are planning their trip to China. |

don't forget about vinny and marty stlouie...and malone...how a team with stamkos scoring 47 goals can still finish near the bottom..pathetic..well, its our own faults..if we had good people running the show, they would tell us how to tank right... |

"Good People" don't tell a young team trying to build character "how to tank" Nothing like telling the players we have that they're not good enough. Win all 3 games and take whatever pick we get.

Nothing wrong with some die hard fans wanting to tank a bit for future success. It's all talk. The team does what it does anyway. Funny thing that could possibly deserve its own thread is the fact the team is 23-14-3 at home. Does that mean it is the coaching staff's fault for not prepping them for road games or are they too young and screwing around on the road. The difference between the Isles and the top teams in the division is that they win at home AND on the road. The Isles don't. |

Put the Cup Back in Our Lobby Where It Belongs
|
A few thoughts to add to previous posts. First, where can we land? Based on an extremely quick and very non-scientific look at the standings, we can finish anywhere from 3rd to 12th place overall. 3rd place would require the Isles to lose all three remaining games while other teams win. 12th place would require the Isles to win their remaining games while other team lose. Both scenarios assume that our fellow basement dwellers aren't playing each other... almost certainly a false assumption but okay for purposes of making a rough estimate. Second, do we have much of chance at moving up high? Perhaps. Yes, today we're slotted as number 7, which gives us a 4.7% shot at picking third. Yawn. But... on the other hand... teams from 3-7 have won 7 of 14 lotteries. Hmm. A few timely losses might still land us a franchise-player. Third, do we have to grab a top pick? Well, aside from the obvious top two, with the new CSB rankings it looks like the consensus breaks down a bit, with Fowler getting downgraded a bit. TSN/McKenzie releases their top 10 on Monday. Right now there are at least three good defense prospects projected around picks 3-8. (Yes, Nino looked good at the WJC.) And with one offensive wildcard projected as a top pick (Connolly) and another enigmatic Russian wunderkid to wonder about (Kabanov), there's plenty of talent in the top 12 picks. Bottom line? One loss would be helpful, and several even more so. But we can be fairly confident of getting a pretty good prospect even if we finish the season on a winning streak. So let's enjoy these last three. |

Born during the 1993 Stanley Cup. How heartbreaking is that?
|
Since it looks like we are basically out of the running for the big three (Hall, Seguin, Fowler), I feel that I can take a step back and hope to see a few more good games before the end of the season. Sure, I was upset that this whole winning streak started, because I wanted to be in the top three picks. But now that we're out of it, there's no use in crying over spilled milk. That being said, here is what I would like to see happen if we are to end up with a pick between 4-12. As can be seen by the past few drafts, Garth and Co. seem to like to lock on to a specific player, and secure that player (as they did with Bailey and de Haan). Similarly to the last two drafts, I expect to see the team drade down to around 12 (if we have a pick earlier, say around 4-7). By trading down, we'd probably recieve a second and/or a third rounder, on top of that 12-ish pick. Next move I'd like to see is Garth packaging two or three of our second/third round picks to move back into the late first round, and snag Kirill Kabanov. For those of you who don't know, he is an immensely talented Russian player who was projected as a top five pick just about a year ago, but who's stock has slipped for "character issues". And before anybody comes at me with the "lazy Russian" point that we all seem to love so much, it should be known that Kabanov managed to come to North America and play in one of the Junior Leagues, in order to become accomadated to the more aggressive North American style of play. So what these "character issues" are, I cannot tell you; but they are probably something that a little maturing can't iron out. So by the time the draft ends, we would end up with a very good, hopefully top ten prospect, as well as a talented foward player with a mountain of upside. Just me playing back-seat GM here

And with aaaaaallllll those guys Tampa Bay has, how has that worked out for them? I would argue they are completely f#@ked up 100x more than we are. They have spent the money and still blow. We at least are trying to build something. |
