This trade is no big deal with a possible payoff. Trading a 41 year old goalie from a team with no playoff chance shouldn't surprise anyone. I actually think they got a good deal for him with potential upside.

Garth Snow got fleeced by a rookie GM.
fleeced? do you remember that last year we could't get a bag of pucks for Rolston? The Isles which are going nowhere fast unloaded a 41 yr old goalie for (dare I say) potentialy a decent d-man. Garf owes it to Rolston for being the good soldier and sending him to a team that is playoff bound. If Rolston wants, he could return next year(why? I don't know?). The tank is on, with the Devils with no 1st round pick, the 1st overall pick will belong to the disfunctional team we call the Islanders.
so even if the devils finish last, and we finish 2...we still get the 1st? what happen to the devils pick?
After they finally got the NHL to approve their 15-year, $100 million contract with Kovalchuk, the league still fined them $3 million and penalized them third-round and first-round draft picks.
oh yeah, forgot about that...thanks..so I guess we don't have to worrry about finishing last..risk losing the pick..so much easier to root for a win when you know the pick is locked up for yourselves..what a relief.

I think it is funny how much hate is going on this page about a guy that nobody on here knows a lick about except for what they read on different blogs.
This is all about ranting about everybodys hate of snow rather than the trade itself, end of story.
I would like to see this kid play some. I guess that wont happen until we have some injuries this year or he is called up in the future.
I was all for dealing Rollie while his value is up. So we will see if we got anything worth a damn.
How's this: yet another kid coming in with FEWER veterans to help in his development. So the current kids are worse off, the future ones are worse off and the only ones who will be better off are the kids drafted before and after our picks. This kid sounds like Tom Poti. Wonder if he can eat peanutbutter?
tom poti? aw, I can only dream..better get the jersey ready...changing my name..

Which system is he going to learn...overspeed, neutral zone trap, 1-1-3, or dump & chase? Do they really have a system?

you know players who develop in the minors often become great players... I will never understand the cleeshea (haha i know no idea how to spell that) that they learn from veterans... it is more media generated crap cause there is nothing else to talk about with the stupid public. Players in the minors dont have veteran champions around them.
Roloson is a goalie, a great veteran leader i am sure, but hell DP can provide the same thing, except of course everybody here hates him cause he is always injured, but i bet players on this team respect him for his dedication to come back and his work ethic.
Personally I need a better argument than that, but that is just me.

I just read something posted on Botta's blog by someone that made me puke. We have some fans who will try and convince themselves that every move is good.
Big defenseman, 4 years since being drafted he still hasn't learned how to use his size to compete. I guess these fans believe THIS Islanders player development team is going to teach him that part of the game?
Have a great night everyone.
Steve,
I know you are ticked. Can't blame you.
However, this is not the only kid to take time to learn how to play D at the nhl level. Hopefully he will and will pan out to be a top 3 dman. The list of guys who needed time to develop on the blueline is looooong... heck, just look at Tom Poti for one.
Don't take the above statement as endorsing the deal. Personally, I know nothing about this kid and getting a "kid prospect" seems like at first glance that Garth made another deal too soon. It could be this kid becomes an excellent dman, but just getting a "potential prospect" for Rollie doesn't seem like enough.
I agree that a bidding war could have come down the line. We still have what...2 months before the deadline.
We shall see who gets the callup from the AHL to fill Rollie's roster spot. At this point, I hope this kid can knock Gervais out of the lineup

Hey Kool Aiders, your boy Wishart has already been sent to Bridgeport, he cant crack the team with Gervais, Reese, and Hillen on defense. You can hang your Wishart jersey next to your Papineau jersey. Wang & Snow get away with this BS because there are too many Kool Aiders drinking what they are serving. No wonder why the league wont step in.
Overspeed....
why are you expecting a kid that young who's playing in the AHL to now move to an nhl team just because he's been traded?
It is not uncommon for defensemen to take longer to develop. The Lightning have a very veteran laden defensive corps. Why do you think he should automatically be brought up just because he was dealt here?
If the kid is making progress at the AHL level, let him develop at the AHL level and come up when he's ready. It might be 5 games it might be 5 months or next year.
I hardly see how claiming he's going to Bridgeport is an example of how he's a bad prospect. Last I checked, Hamonic was in Bridgeport for several months and he's looked good so far. Chances are Calvin de Haan will play some at Bridgeport next season before coming up as well.
If you want to claim the deal is bad because Garth didn't get a vet or a proven nhl talent back, ok, I can go along with that. But claiming this kid is bad because he's being sent to the bridge (and that IS what you are implying) is neither accurate nor fair to the kid.

Another big body that does nothing with it, traded a few times already and already banished to the AHL. Keep chugging that Kool Aid, this is why Wang can get away with running this circus, because there are still fans who support this. You CAN fool some of the People ALL of the time apparently. Justin Papineau Part 2!
This is the second time he's been traded and if you look at the previous time he was traded, he was THE KEY piece SJ gave up in a move to bring in Boyle to their defense. This kid wasn't a throw in.
You can't have it both ways...
Tampa once thought highly enough of this kid to trade an all-star Dman in Boyle to get him from SJ's system.
But now that Tampa traded him to fill a big hole in net, they somehow don't like him anymore?
We'll see how the deal turns out. Yeah, I would have liked an nhl ready vet with talent, too, but all this armchair QBing from both sides is getting comicial.
Next we'll have Zep add him to his "DP, Tavares BUST" list before the kid even arrives in Bridgeport.

Its just the same ole story year in and year out for the last few years. Washington gave up more for Scott Hannan, than Montreal did for Wiz and TB did for Roloson, they had to give up a real nhl roster holding player.

Duh.... Hannan is an established nhl player who is better than either Rolie or Wiz. Of course Hannan would bring back more than Rolie or Wiz, but it isn't like Hannan brought back a mint. I don't see your comparison. Hannan was brought in to add vet leadership to the Crapitals blueline. And in return what did the Avs get?? Tomas Fleishmann who has been underachiving in the Caps lineup. So the Avs essentially took a prospect for Hannan because they are also undergoing a youth movement.

GM Garth Snow explains Roloson trade and discusses direction of team
5:44 PM By Katie Strang
Islanders general manager Garth Snow, who traded goaltender Dwayne Roloson to Tampa Bay Saturday in exchange for defensive prospect Ty Wishart, said he pulled the trigger because he felt satisfied the value of return was the best he could get.
“To me, that was the best offer we would have gotten for him and I believe it was the best deal even if we had waited,” Snow told Newsday Sunday.
Although the move is hardly surprising given the Islanders’ spot in the standings—14th in the Eastern Conference—and the fact that Roloson was on the last year of a two-year deal, the timing was a bit surprising.
Led by some impressive goaltending performances, the Islanders have rattled off six of eight wins, including their last two to knock off the top two teams in each conference, Pittsburgh and Detroit.
And although the 4-3 shootout win over the Penguins Wednesday came courtesy of Rick DiPietro’s inspired 38-save performance, DiPietro only recently came off injured reserve for a surgically-repaired left knee.
Roloson, a veteran leader in the room and a steadying presence on the ice, was the second big trade by the Islanders this week. They also moved key defenseman James Wisniewski, shipping him to Montreal Tuesday in exchange for a compensatory second-round pick in 2011 and a fifth-round pick in 2012.
When asked if this was an indication that the Islanders had given up on the rest of this season—the team is 17 points out of the 8th spot in the East—Snow bristled.
“That’s not true at all,” Snow said. “With the Wisniewski trade we had a situation where [Andrew] MacDonald and [Milan] Jurcina both came off injured reserve, [Travis] Hamonic has played at an extremely high level. With the combination of those three factors, it made me feel more comfortable making that trade. As for the Roloson trade…I think [Nathan] Lawson will surprise people with how well he’ll play. It’s also an opportunity for [Kevin] Poulin and [Mikko] Koskinen to develop in an environment where there isn’t three goalies.”
Alternate captain MacDonald said that wasn’t the message received in the room, either.
“I don’t think there is any concern about that,” Macdonald said. "We’re making moves for the benefit of the team and it’s business as usual for us. We’re just trying to win games.
The 27-year-old Lawson, who made his NHL debut a few weeks ago, joined the team in Calgary Sunday and will presumably serve as DiPietro’s backup for the remainder of the season.
Wishart, 22, reported to the Islanders’ minor league affiliate Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The 6-4, 222-pound defenseman, a former first-round pick by San Jose in 2006, has 18 points (4 goals, 14 assists) in 31 games for the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals this season.
Snow described Wishart as a “big body, still young, developing defenseman with upside.”
Roloson, 41, told Newsday Saturday he was “elated” about the chance to make a playoff appearance with Tampa Bay this post-season.
"For me personally, it would great to play in the playoffs. Everyone always writes how old I am, but no matter what age you are it means a lot to play in the playoffs. You have a chance to do something you've always dreamed of-- to win the Stanley Cup."
It really bugs me that he says he has a feeling Lawson will surprise us. The kid has played 1 NHL game. 1.
He's actually right. I am surprised. Surprised Snow is a better BS artist than I ever thought he could be. Drop dead Garth, just drop dead already.

I saw that 1 NHL game in person vs. PHX a couple of weeks ago. The isles actually dominated that game and he was not challenged that severely. I was not impressed - when Phx decided to turn it on, they had their way with him. The shootout was an outright embarrassment. If anything, I am excited to see what opportunity this creates for Poulin.
Lawson is nothing special, no matter what Garth says. Rollie was the backbone to the few victories we had this year. He can't be expecting Lawson to do the same job - I certainly don't.
