GM Garth Snow explains Roloson trade and discusses direction of team

5:44 PM By Katie Strang

Islanders general manager Garth Snow, who traded goaltender Dwayne Roloson to Tampa Bay Saturday in exchange for defensive prospect Ty Wishart, said he pulled the trigger because he felt satisfied the value of return was the best he could get.

“To me, that was the best offer we would have gotten for him and I believe it was the best deal even if we had waited,” Snow told Newsday Sunday.

Although the move is hardly surprising given the Islanders’ spot in the standings—14th in the Eastern Conference—and the fact that Roloson was on the last year of a two-year deal, the timing was a bit surprising.

Led by some impressive goaltending performances, the Islanders have rattled off six of eight wins, including their last two to knock off the top two teams in each conference, Pittsburgh and Detroit.

And although the 4-3 shootout win over the Penguins Wednesday came courtesy of Rick DiPietro’s inspired 38-save performance, DiPietro only recently came off injured reserve for a surgically-repaired left knee.

Roloson, a veteran leader in the room and a steadying presence on the ice, was the second big trade by the Islanders this week. They also moved key defenseman James Wisniewski, shipping him to Montreal Tuesday in exchange for a compensatory second-round pick in 2011 and a fifth-round pick in 2012.

When asked if this was an indication that the Islanders had given up on the rest of this season—the team is 17 points out of the 8th spot in the East—Snow bristled.

“That’s not true at all,” Snow said. “With the Wisniewski trade we had a situation where [Andrew] MacDonald and [Milan] Jurcina both came off injured reserve, [Travis] Hamonic has played at an extremely high level. With the combination of those three factors, it made me feel more comfortable making that trade. As for the Roloson trade…I think [Nathan] Lawson will surprise people with how well he’ll play. It’s also an opportunity for [Kevin] Poulin and [Mikko] Koskinen to develop in an environment where there isn’t three goalies.”

Alternate captain MacDonald said that wasn’t the message received in the room, either.

“I don’t think there is any concern about that,” Macdonald said. "We’re making moves for the benefit of the team and it’s business as usual for us. We’re just trying to win games.

The 27-year-old Lawson, who made his NHL debut a few weeks ago, joined the team in Calgary Sunday and will presumably serve as DiPietro’s backup for the remainder of the season.

Wishart, 22, reported to the Islanders’ minor league affiliate Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The 6-4, 222-pound defenseman, a former first-round pick by San Jose in 2006, has 18 points (4 goals, 14 assists) in 31 games for the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals this season.

Snow described Wishart as a “big body, still young, developing defenseman with upside.”

Roloson, 41, told Newsday Saturday he was “elated” about the chance to make a playoff appearance with Tampa Bay this post-season.

"For me personally, it would great to play in the playoffs. Everyone always writes how old I am, but no matter what age you are it means a lot to play in the playoffs. You have a chance to do something you've always dreamed of-- to win the Stanley Cup."

It really bugs me that he says he has a feeling Lawson will surprise us.
The kid has played 1 NHL game. 1.

He's actually right. I am surprised. Surprised Snow is a better BS artist than I ever thought he could be.
Drop dead Garth, just drop dead already.

I saw that 1 NHL game in person vs. PHX a couple of weeks ago. The isles actually dominated that game and he was not challenged that severely. I was not impressed - when Phx decided to turn it on, they had their way with him. The shootout was an outright embarrassment. If anything, I am excited to see what opportunity this creates for Poulin.

Lawson is nothing special, no matter what Garth says. Rollie was the backbone to the few victories we had this year. He can't be expecting Lawson to do the same job - I certainly don't.

I think we understand this now?

But the who.

Wang does not want to win yet....we can't possibly win in our arena and blame it at the same time.

Snow is on page 32 of GM For Dummies so far (the coloring book version) and either is doing as told (cut payroll) or he took offense and traded Wiz and Rollie both for being irate over the team's fortunes/direction.

DP is no longer second best.

I think it's Snow. Kids are his meal ticket. Results are not in stone for years, and if they fail it can be dismissed. Don't forget draft picks add even more time. This guy can be Biron or Brewer for us but Snow can always say he was a former first rounder traded for Boyle. Whoopee. He's not responsible for talent, just for potential.
"clearly it's Rick DiPietro's stupidity that's put the islanders in this situation getting into an altercation when a game was over..." Keith Jones on VS

"But the Coliseum became a repository for all the team's troubles, a convenient scapegoat. There were suggestions that no major free agent ever would set foot in such a decrepit place. We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann

Talent Analysis

Wishart has excellent size, is mobile and has the hockey sense to be a dominant defenseman. He possesses good offensive tools with a heavy shot and good vision in the offensive zone. Does not play the punishing game expected of a player his size but is a skilled defender who knows how to use positioning and angles to his advantage. Wishart has continued to improve in two seasons at the AHL level and is on the cusp of being NHL-ready.

Future
A former first round pick, Wishart will challenge for a spot with the Lightning this season. The Lightning defense corps currently features four players 30-years-old or older so he may once again be returned to Norfolk rather than see limited ice time at the NHL level. Long-term, Wishart projects as a top pairing defenseman who plays a lot of minutes and who contributes at both ends of the ice.

This is from Hockeysfuture. I am well aware this is projection only. He's young, and he has developed in the AHL properly. Roloson has been great for us, but he's not coming back and I don't think this was a bad deal. The reason he wasn't traded last year was because the best we could of got for him was a 3rd pick. He is now 1 year older and we get a pretty good prospect (on paper). I'm ok with this move. Still don't like Snow or Wang though :)

I am good with this move too. Its a classic case of sell high. He had just been player of the week and stole 2 points for us in Detroit. As was stated before, at last year's deadline, he was only going to fetch us a 3rd round pick. We now have a former 1st rounder who is just about NHL ready.

My gripe is with Lawson. He will not surprise anyone. My gripe is they left Poulin in BPT when Patrick Roy said he's the best goalie in juniors. In his time at BPT, Poulin has starred. Why not give him a shot for the balance of the year?

As for Rollie, I am glad he went to a strong contender. I, personally, will be rooting for TB in this year's playoffs. Now that they have goaltending, I think they will do major damage in the playoffs. The guy was a pro in how he handled his business in his short time with us and I have the utmost respect for him. If nothing else, Garth gets points from me for sending him to a solid contender for a shot at the Cup.

Keep Poulin down there. No way I'd put him behind this defense. Let him gain confidence and experience and star at the Bridge for a while. I wouldn't bring him up here until he's ready to take over the starting spot.

Tough move for me to swallow based solely on Snow's unproven track record and history of salary dumps and idiotic moves. I like this guy's size and he is a young, highly drafted prospect and I will reserve judgement until I watch him. It would be nice to have a solid collection of homegrown blueliners for years to come with de Haan, Hamonic, Wishart, and Andy Mac.

But, Snow just shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt. I always though teams were more willing to overpay at the trade deadline. What does Snow know over that of the more respected, proven GMs in the league? I hope he proves us all wrong with this move. But I'm not holding my breath.

Ty Wishart, D, 22

At only twenty-two, the former San Jose Sharks first-round pick continues to improve at Norfolk, becoming even more adept offensively this season. Wishart leads the Admiral blueline in scoring with four goals and fourteen assists through 30 games. Last season, Wishart was minus-18 for the Admirals, but has changed that around, and is now plus-13. Wishart, the top defenseman in the Lightning system, certainly portends of a valuable player sometime very soon for Tampa Bay. Always replete with tremendous physical skill, this once highly touted prospect is finally beginning to ripen.

I know rankings are subjective, but this review is quite a bit different than the one posted earlier that said he was the 8th ranked player in the Bolts system.

yes lawson seemingly does not impress us...but, he isn't supposed. he is here for the balance of the season to be a backup to rick..rick will see the majority of the workload..which frightens me..for obvious reasons. It would not make any sense to bring up poulin to be a backup. Let him finish out the year at bridgeport. and if he has an outstanding training camp..well then for sure, next season..an honestly, I thought lawson played a pretty good game against phoenix...if anything, I thought the team infront of him hurt his chances more for a getting a win..perhaps, he would do better if he was on a more balanced or better defensive team..as for the shootout goals, eh...I think he sucked royally. but didn't last year biron or rolie not particulary good in shootouts? I say give the guy a chance..not a kid anymore, he is 27 yrs I think, so don't look for this guy to be around along time..I say this is his one chance at the nhl dream..

Agreed and this is one of the biggest pieces of this trade...until we know what this kid can do. poulin needs to play at b-port and they had a 3 man rotation going. Not sure roli would have got us any more than this or a 2 rd pick at the deadline anyway.

I think oldtimer had it right. Wang can't afford to lose any sympathy he feels he has by brainwashing the public the Islanders can't win in this building. Reason: NO ONE wants to play in this building. He has the kool aid drinkers convinced but has never been able to do the same with the TOH. So keep trading them, build up the draft picks then send them to other teams to move up a few places.

Good luck to Role Son in Tampa Bay - the guy has been a class act here (as far as we can see from the outside).

For NYI goaltending - there's only two* possibilities:

#1 Rick can handle the work with knees / hips holding up for rest of season.
- Rick stays the #1, offloading games to backup (Lawson) as needed

#2 He can't.
- forced to IR longer term - or retirement
- NYI have to trade back for a younger #1 / still get Lawson some NHL games; G_D forbid Poulin is playing superhero style for BPT, racking up 0 and 1 goal games every night -- they could flip flop Lawson and Poulin

We've been asking for the G situation to be resolved, so here it goes.

I can't see it playing out over length of RD contract, but that's a horse of a different color.... I would LOVE to be proven wrong & see the guy get to where he should be, since he seems like a genuinely great competitor & a good team guy, but he's waaaaay behind the eight ball injury wise.

(Did I mix enough metaphors?)

*This being the Islanders, at least one other possibility exists -- Rick has a lingering injury which is not disclosed / not understood & he worsens it (see Retirement) or drops in & out of the lineup between "short term" IR stints. This would be the "Two and a Half (G) Men" scenario -- not good....

I think we get a clear indication whether Rick is here for a few more years or he's done. I'm talking about the physical side. Let the franchise find out NOW whether he is physically able to play professional hockey on a demanding basis. If not, let's move on. And start worrying about who is our number one pick.
