The Wilpons are ready to help Wang out with his dilemna. Omar is available to replace Snowy.

It's the building's fault that the Wilpons have to sell off a share of the Mets.
Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

So we had Wisnewski and now Wisart.

Anyway you look at it, we end up with a Wisser.

I wanna see him respond to the bang some bodies comment he made.

Unless it's the icegirls, I'll be surprised if he finishes the game with more than 1 hit.
Word is he doesn't use his size enough.

Good call, we still have a "wisser" but we're none the wiser.
Unless of course this kid makes a drastic turnaround.

You would think something like taking the body more would be an easy addition to an NHL players game unless there is a reason for the lack of physical play. Sure, it wears you out and may add to the bumps and bruises but really, enough pond hockey already. The team has too many players addicted to stick checking already. Man up or man overboard.

Well I was at the game last night and after hearing many other people's scouting reports on Wishart, I finally got to begin to see him on my own. And after watching his 15:20 of icetime and his two assists and a plus 1 for the night, there are a few things that I liked.

1. He is mobile and he is tall and lanky. Just watching him bring the puck up the ice, he reminds me of Braydon Coburn. I'm not sure if he has the shot Coburn has (probably doesn't) but that's just the type of player he reminded me of.

2. Didn't make any stupid decisions with the puck. Before I can say that he isn't a "turnover machine" I'd like to see him over a 10-15 game sample.

3. I know he said he likes to think of himself as a physical player, but he wasn't very physical. Saw him make one hit during a rush, but it wasn't much of one.

And finally the most important thing about Ty Wishart:

4. HE IS BETTER THAN GERVAIS. MUCH BETTER. I've seen him play 15 minutes of hockey and it's not even a question. I'm not convinced that Wishart should be thought of as a possibility for next season's top 6 (his play will dictate that) but there is no possible way I will tolerate Bruno Gervais being in this organization next season. We have better players in both the NHL and AHL.

I liked the way he played, kept it simple and didn't try to make any high risk plays. It's funny you mention Coburn because that's exactly who I said to my dad last night that he reminded me of. I also said to my dad a couple games ago that Bruno Gervais can not do anything that a hockey player should be able to do...like skate and stick handle at the same time, recieve a pass, take a shot, sometimes even something as simple as being able to stand up on his skates. He is just an awful hockey player and there is no doubt in my mind that Gervais and Reese is the worst defensive pairing in the NHL...and probably one of the worst in the AHL.

Agreed on all counts

And you make an excellent point about how he kept his game simple and didn't try to do too much. Maybe that's where he's gotten into trouble before, I'm not sure. Or maybe because of where he was drafted the Lightning always forced him into getting top PP time and top pairing minutes. New organization, definitely less pressure for him. There's nothing wrong with being a 5th or 6th defenseman on a good team. If he ever wound up being that for us I'd be fine with that. I'm not expecting any All Star appearances from him.

better than gervais..good enough for me. :)

and saying he reminds of coburn, should make shooter rather happy...see, he stole a "coburn like player" from the bolts..and all it talk was a 41 year old goalie with perhaps 1 more year left in him...thats more than rick, so I guess its not a steal..or so.. :dontknow:

On the first goal against. Wishart made a huge cardinal mistake.
When the puck gets dumped in or wound around the boards. The 2nd defenseman's job is to look
and pick up the first forechecker, either to communicate to the goalie or 1st defenseman back, or in this case...cheat by skating towards the skating lane of the oncoming forechecker to allow that split second to make a play.

Instead we saw pressure on Jurcina and Poulin who weren't afforded that in their own blunder behind the net. The live shot didn't show Wishart's mistake. But the side view replay did. He was watching the puck. A big no no as the forechecker pounced in and created the turnover.

However....rest of the game...he eased in and I think it helped our guys finished alot of checks.

I like his size. Let's see what we have in him next year...when he gets to camp and how hard he wants a roster spot. Time is running out. Will be his 5th attempt at cracking through an NHL training camp. (While defensemen take longer...he's been in better organizations with better player development)

He's young Steve. You know as well as anyone that defensemen are like left-handed pitchers... sometimes it takes them awhile to come around. He's going to make mistakes. And the mental mistakes like the one you mentioned can be corrected. Overall, he played well. I agree that he has plenty of time to try and prove himself before next season.

It's important that all of us remember this:

Kyle Okposo, 7th overall
Michael Grabner, 14th overall
Ty Wishart, 16th overall

Those three Islanders were all drafted in the 1st round of the 2006 draft. Okposo made the NHL the fastest because of where he was drafted and the lack of talent on the Islanders at the time. But Grabner is just starting to show what he can do now. Wishart is a defenseman, we all know they take longer, he has a year or two to prove himself. But all three still have a lot more to prove in their careers, as well as a lot of other first rounders in that draft.

That's a great point. With no veterans, it's easy to forget with this team just how young they really are. All three of these kids (I can say kids because I'm older than them, barely) are going to be in the league for at least another 10 years.

Jeremy Colliton...career minor leaguer thus far.
Game 1 this year...had 2 goals.
Since then? 13 games....1 assist and a minus 7.

Not saying Wishart is a bust, will be but I knew after the 2 secondary assists,
there'd be an analytical projection for best case scenario.

What he has going for him are 2 things. A chance to play and no pressure
because we aren't in a playoff race with in your face veterans expecting you to
rise your game.

He can either standout or step out with no worries as he'll have all summer to work on
making the team next year. But as mentioned...he's an upgrade over Gervais and Reese
which doesn't really say much for those 2.

Oh believe me Steve I'm not pumping up Wishart by saying he's better than Gervais and Reese. I'm just all about the best players playing and they are both bad, if Dale Purinton was an improvement over them (debatable) I'd want him in the lineup.

a good 15 games or more.
We all do. I think we may need more, if not longer.

I think the risk/reward with him is a better than using Gervais or Reese.
Then again, the way Martinek has played tonight in 1st period vs Leafs, I'd prefer
Wishart over him too.

I'm a fickle I tell ya.

I'm wondering if Martinek is on his way down. From his first game with the Islanders I can't remember him playing shakier than he has been lately. Not sure what's going on with that. He's been a steady player for us for a long time now but I think it's time to cut bait. Cut bait with Hillen too. We need some guys with size on the back end.

I would offer Radek up to two more years, a returning Streit should fix what ails him. I agree on the undersized Hillen, he is too easy to take out of a play.

I agree Snowy. Martinek has not played well lately, and I'd be fine with trying to move him at the deadline, one of the few players we have that would get some interest.

I didn't think Wishart's game last night was as good as his first. I'll see how he does over the next few games before I draw any opinion of him. I just hope he doesn't have the Colliton syndrome. Great the first game and a continuing down fall after that. Colliton has no business being in the NHL.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!
