I didn't like what Gillies did and I am not talking about the taunting which was just stupid and cheap as well. Worse was continuing to punch someone when they are down and defenseless. What if that player had incurred a concussion on that hit and then took another couple of hard unobstructed punches to the head right after. That could end up ending a career and there is no place for it IMO. Gillies serves very little if any purpose on this team and I hope he isn't on the team next year. We need an enforcer who can take a responsible shift now and then and who isn't a liability on the ice. He is as one dimensional as they come and he is not even that good at that one dimension. No problem at all with the rest of the night. I just hope this wasn't just a one night thing. They need to man up every time some dirty team or players try to take advantage.

Gillies is an idiot. Literally. That high elbow he threw was revenge for Hillen getting smacked earlier.
But the meathead stood over Eric Tangradi and kept trying to pound him when the guy was obviously hurt and not turtling.

He then stood in the walkway and ran his mouth.
Get this asshole off this team already....bring him up when we play the rangers.

That's the only time this stuff is acceptible.

I just watched the DVR of the game. First of all Gillies is KRAZY!!!!! But you know what GOOD FOR THE FRIGGEN GUYS!!! I love how today the media is RIPPING apart the Isles but yet the Habs-Bruins game the other night was great" old time hockey". It just goes to show you how biased this league is. WHATEVER. As a fan I felt like the team was sticking up for us Isles fans too who have had to endure the lack of respect as well. The best part is how people are saying how injury depleted the Penguins lineup was hence why they lost the game. Seriously? Cheapshots or not I am proud to be an Isles fan today! LET'S GO ISLES!!!!!

Now I just hope the Isles don't lose 10-0 to the Sabres tomorrow.

Sorry steve. I disagree. He is now worth more than ever in his hockey life. Opponents now know we have a pyscho on the bench who will make them a target if they rub him or any other Islander the wrong way. Think about that from a player point of view. Wouldn't you think twice, now that you know what a danger he could be to you personally, before you cheap shotted someone?

As low as his value is, it's more today than it was before yesterday.

Sorry steve. I disagree.

When the emotional dusts settles, Gillies' conduct during and after will be the polarizing issue.

Whew, what can I say, it's all been said already (and I agree with 99% of the remarks, including Mulefan's criticisms...there were a few cringe-inducing moments mixed in with the glorious ones in the evening). So I will just add a personal perspective: My wife is a ardent Pens fan. This week is the first week in about 4 years that she's away from the house, visiting family in Florida. She flies back in tonite. Lord, on behalf of myself and my son, THANK YOU for allowing this game to happen while she was away so we could cheer and gloat with unrestrained glee.

This is exactly what I was talking about earlier during the whole DP debate and the talk about the Tavares hit by Phaneuf. It isn't enough to have Gillies on the bench playing only 4 minutes a night, yelling from the bench and glowering at people. Do this once or twice and it might never have to happen again.

Now, I'm not saying we need to do the same with the Sabres. They've not been running us. There is no history there. But teams like the Pens, Toronto with Phaneuf, Philadelphia with Pronger and Carcillo, teams like that...no problem with getting ugly with dbags like that.

I also don't think Gillies is a great fighter by any means, but he'll destroy the Max Talbot's, Matt Cooke's and Sean Avery's of the world and he COULD be a deterrant if ever used properly. That is why I was THRILLED, and posted so, that we moved Matt Martin to the third line. He gets more icetime and can be MORE of a protector...and it paid immediate dividends.

I'll be intersted to see what happens in the Pens rematch in April. The Pens could need that game to get in to the playoffs. If they don't, I'd expect payback. If they do, I don't see them doing anything stupid...except Cooke. He can't help himself.

As for what this means for the future, I think some of the statements are a bit premature. This could be the start of a maturation process or this could be a one shot deal. I'm interested to see how we come out v. the Sabres tomorrow. Will we be composed and ready to play or will we be flat due to an emotional letdown? THow they respond on Sunday and Tuesday will speak more to the possible maturation of a young team then what happened Friday night.

Let's not get too excited. Many of you were throwing dirty on this organization just a week ago when we played the Pens. Now you'd think we are possibly ready to make a run next year without changing ANY personnel. I understand the excitement, but lets not get crazy yet.

Friday was a great night, but so far it was an island in a sason crap thus far. Let's see if it at least turns into something more...I hope it will.

A funny thing happened to the Pens on their way to practice at Central Park today...

Pens take cabs to Central Park rink for outdoor skateHow many New York City taxi cabs does it take to transport an entire NHL team?

The Pittsburgh Penguins found out Saturday morning when their team bus collided with a car at Columbus Circle en route to Central Park where they practiced outdoors at Lasker Rink. The team -- dressed in full gear -- proceeded to hail 18 yellow taxi cabs to make the final leg of the short journey from Madison Square Garden to Central Park.

"It was quite a sight," coach Dan Bylsma said. "I think the gentleman involved in the accident backed off a little bit when he saw a whole hockey team get out with sticks and gloves in their hands -- and if he had known anything about last night, that may be why he backed off."

The fully-dressed hockey players enjoyed the true New York experience of catching a cab.

"We were scrambling for cabs to get over there," forward Craig Adams told NHL.com. "We were in track suits and helmets and sticks and gloves and stuff, so it was fun. It was an adventure."

Adams shared his cab with Alex Goligoski, Ben Lovejoy and goaltender Brent Johnson.

"We had the big SUV cab because Johnny had all his goalie gear," Adams said. "I don't think the cab driver cared, but I don't think he was a big hockey fan."

The team took it in stride though, as the taxis dropped them off at the Northeast corner of Central Park. They walked past a pack of young hockey fans that mobbed them, signing autographs along the way.

But for a group of guys who play 82 or more games a season, skating on an outdoor surface is always a sweet treat -- one that Bylsma couldn't pass up. Rather than putting the team through a normal practice the coach opted for a classic game of shinny.

"It was great to get outdoors and play another game outside this season," Bylsma said.

Even though the Penguins relished the chance to play in the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on New Year's Day at Heinz Field, the weather (37 degrees Fahrenheit) was more agreeable for outdoor hockey. Snowflakes gently decorated the scene as the team played a hearty game of four-on-four.

The Penguins were split into two squads, with Marc-Andre Fleury between the pipes for the Black crew and Brent Johnson in net for White. First team to reach five goals would be the winner, and the loser would skate laps.

"The white team kind of complained that they played against the wind," Pascal Dupuis said. "But the black team won."

Following two rounds of first-one-to-five, the squads competed in a shootout in which the White team prevailed.

"We lost the game, but we won in the shootout so we still came out even," Adams said.

From backyard rinks all across North America and Europe, the Penguins enjoyed the chance to play on New York City's backyard rink -- and the journey getting there was fun too.

"It was kind of a treat," said Adams, who grew up playing on a lake near Calgary. "We had an adventure getting over there but it's a great rink and the weather was perfect, so we had a lot of fun and a lot of kids watched. It was a good day for sure."

There is no truth to the rumor that Gillies, Martin nor Haley were driving the car. :nono: :letssee:

what Gillies did was idiotic. But I won't let the actions of one ruin my thoughts about the night. Gillies is the least valuable of the tough guys we have. Haley even serves a better role since he seems to have no hesitation to defend a teammate and can actually skate.

These are people with families.
You don't pound a guy when he's down.

Had Godard done this to Matt Martin we'd be pissed, yes even if in the pevious game
Comeau threw a hit on Kennedy that knocked him out and our goalie TKO'd theirs.
But it didn't happen that way.

Speaking of people with families...the OTHER ugly side of this sport with fans.
In Ottawa, a radio station has banned Carrie Underwood, blaming her for Mike Fisher's trade to Nashville. Fans up there are VERY pissed and some real ugly stuff has been said and discussed, openly even through the media.
God forbid a player and his wife decide they want to have children and spend more time together
because of their schedules. I think it's admirable and Ottawa got a very good return.
F the fans, F the org. Family comes first. I bet half the idiots up their are single meathead guys
who have no concept of the commitment it takes to spend the rest of your life with someone you love more than life itself, nor what it will take to discover a new love when you have children.

At the end of the day, it's a hockey game. We love it. We're passionate about it. But think about what happened to Steve Moore's career and health and how that's affected his family.

let's face the facts, outside of last nights game the Islanders play clean hockey. being a young team unproven and being called "doormats" a "cupcake" on every teams schedule and having the other teams players try to kill few Islander players.

this team got together and said that's it, this ends now. ask Bobby Nystrom what turned it around for the Isles in the mid 70's? and he'll tell you it was when they stood up against the Flyers.

in sports this is inevitable. there comes a time in a team maturation that they need to take the next step. some teams flounder and you know you need to make changes. other times teams rise to the occasion.

let me say this: this team has turned the corner and I think the turning point for the Islanders was against the Red Wings on new years eve-last night the Islanders solidified themselves as a team on the rise they can play good hockey and they can play tough hockey.

If I had any toughness at all I would never be afraid or think twice about Gillies unless his name was Clark and it was the 80s. He loses most of his fights and I was surprised that he didn't get his lunch handed to him by Godard. Third man in aside, I wish we never got rid of Godard. He is someone I wouldn't want to tangle with. Gillies has lost or tied 99% of the fights I have seen him have so I think it is safe to say that we could use an upgrade in that department. If I am gonna carry a one dimensional player on the roster I want someone who is gonna kick some friggin' ass when he drops the gloves. I would though take notice of a player like Haley!!! That kid takes no prisoners and gets right to the point. There is no effing around with this kid. If someone engages him they had better be ready to tussle right away or they are gonna be in for it!!! I wanna see Haley knock Avery into the next week the first time he runs one of our goalies.

Is it fair to say that this was our Stanley Cup? :rotflmao:

Is it just me, or is this season very reminiscent(sp) of the Charlestown Chiefs?
Lets take a look:
Things that have happened:
Bad team is struggling
Threatened to be sold
Owner gets three tough guys for the team (Martin, Haley and Konopka)
Things that are yet to happen:
They turn out to be great additions to the team
Team starts selling out, gets a booster club to follow it around
Team wins a lot of games
Team makes playoffs
Team wins championship

Now I'm not saying that the Isles will win the Cup because JT is dancing around in his tighty-whiteys, but wouldn't it be eery if they won a Cup in the next couple years? Its the same exact story.

loved lastnight...had trouble falling asleep so pumped...though I must say..watching haley about to fight johnson I see the ref there, he watches godard come flying by not stopping him and allows to be 3rd man in..then hillen has opportunity to grab godard off of haley, and he taps him...jurcina no help at all either..I know I'm nitpicking over silly stuff here..but I'm really seeing the softness in some players..not saying nothing wrong with it, provided that player has something to offer..but, I would prefer to really see the gervais, hillen, martinek, jurcina etc gone..nothing to offer..It was like those guys wanted no part of it.Haley is fighting two guys, and his help is two softy islanders..

and why konokpa is in a hearing is beyond me..he did nothing to warrant it...because he was vocal before and after game? I think the islanders should reward him by signing him now and not waiting for after the season..

I'm sure these are the same idiots that blamed Janet Jones when Wayne was traded to LA, despite the fact that Wayne forced the Oilers ownership to go into Wayne's last season of his deal and they couldn't afford the asking price.

Mike Fischer I know was a popular guy in Ottawa, but really, he's worth getting this worked up about on a team that will miss the playoffs?

Actually, he'll tell you it was the 1980 playoffs in Boston. He, Howatt and Gillies met in their hotel and made a pact to not allow any Bruin to do any rough stuff to them.

We didn't win cups in the 70's.
