With what has happened with Wilpon and the Mets and all of Nassau's fiscal problems I think it's safe to say that the Islanders as we know them will be no more in 2016. Just enjoy them now as they mature into a good team and worry about whether to stick with them as the Quebec whoevers when that time comes. It would be the suckiest irony to see them move to Quebec and win the Cup the same way the Avalanche won the year after moving from Quebec.
I wish there was a trickle of hope but it's looking more and more like Chuckie is just riding it out until the lease expires. I don't blame this totally on him and I don't want to hear one single Nassau County or Town of Hempstead politician crying and saying they didn't want this. They dragged Wang through years of studies and meetings and delays only to turn him down in the end. They could have turned him down flat out years ago and maybe we could have gotten something else done somewhere in Nassau or Suffolk before the economy tanked. Now neither the state counties or towns are gonna approve anything that involves any tax payer moneys.
They are dying for a team in Quebec as well as Winnipeg and their dollar value has caught up to ours and the fans there are willing to ante up with some tax money for new arenas. The perfect storm at the wrong time for us Islanders fans. So get ready to root for the Quebec or Winnipeg whoevers or to pick a new team to root for. I will wait until it happens before I cross that road. I don't even know if I am capable of rooting for anything other than that Islanders crest.
It doesn't look good for sure. Nassau/TOH has done nothing to help. Regarding Brooks - why couldn't Wang or any NYI owner contact Bloomberg or NYC to build on the land next to CitiField or Willets Point? Why does it HAVE to be Wilpon's involvement? Wilpon doesn't own the land, NYC does.

Or he'll extend the current lease he's making money on. Maybe five years if he wants to play hardball later for his Wangland, or fifteen if he's given up on Wangland. The current lease makes him money. Imagine if the State were to put the earmarked money into renovating the place that they're supposed to be doing with said money? Wang would be a fool to not sign immediately if they gave him the same terms.
Maybe he'd hire real talent if he knew playoff revenue would line his pockets even moreso? (doubt it....the old lease guaranteed he's make the best money with the playoffs and he still acted like a drunken ass with hirings).
All this talk about revenue gains of ownership in Nassau by Wang as opposed to a tenant in Queens etc. is missing 1 very important thing - Nassau is fiscally a mess, broke and can't afford to pay for cops or the light bill. The cart has been put before the horse here. No arena will be built in Nassau for Wang to have control of all revenue, concert, parking, concession items etc. None. Time to look elsewhere. How will he extend the current lease if it ends in 2015? When he and Bettman said they won't stay a minute past when the lease is up? How will he get the same parking, concessions, concerts revenues he gets now from Dem Suozzi under the GOP post 2015 when it will change?
You're acting as if post 2015 in Nassau is a given when Nassau is broke and TOH doesn't care with no arena in sight there..

Yeah.....and I said the STATE, which has funds, uses the funds.....when did I say Nassau County was going to pay for anything? They're going to try and become #1 in the highest overpaid cop tournament again, probably, but they don't have the money to pay for Wang's parking hike the way things are.
So I said the STATE.
BTW, Bettman also said he likes women. I wouldn't take what he says as gospel. If Wang is happy with the money part and redid the lockerrooms....what's Bettman gonna say?
"Sorry, you gotta move and we're fining your coach for not controlling the bathroom lines."
Once again, Nassau's out of the picture. They only deal with the lease renewal. That should be a slam dunk. Or did you miss the turnabout D'Amato and Mondello did? (Or is this another GOP hate post?) Wang has leverage. Quebec wants them. KC wants them. The Mets are down but not out. Nassau can't afford to lose the revenue with the vacancy rate making developing the area useless for some time.

This being the same STATE that just announced budget cuts like Medicaid, education etc. under Cuomo is going to fund your arena in the LI suburbs? Because they have nothing more important to spend on? The STATE will pay for everything and Nassau will pay little while TOH doesn't give a damn? OK
Wanna buy a bridge in Brooklyn? Perhaps some swampland in Fla.?
Or is this just another wishfull hopeful thinking post of yours?
You're putting faith in D'amato and Mondello? Those corrupt GOP's? Because they've been so helpfull so far? That SMG lease was great.
Nassau loses 2 million a year now on the Coliseum. They and TOH don't care if NYI leaves. There is no leverage. Why do you think they've done NOTHING to help?
Listen, everyone here wants it to work. We wouldn't be here rooting for a crap neglected franchise with no luck that was out of it in November if we didn't. But the sad reality is there isn't enough of us that support the franchise...for many reasons. And the politicians and owner don't care. I'd hate that the tool Brooks is right but I can't see much opposing his thoughts.
(I hope your SAKIC Quebec jersey fits. You'll need it.)

The GOP has magic powers, though......one virgin sacrifice on an upside down cross and they can get EARMARKED MONEY spent on it's purpose as per the prior year's budget in which it was allocated.
But arguing this with you would be like arguing with a zealot the possibility of evolution. You won't listen, you'll bring up insult and diatribe you bring up on every board and then start the witchhunt (GOP) so why bother?
Yeah, NY earmarks won't get spent on the Coliseum ever......because....you fill in the blanks. I'm dying to hear.
And also tell me why Wang won't get anything close to the current deal in an extension (you already did: THE GOP!!!) and why Queenz, Baby! will offer him more revenue than Nassau.
Why you hate Nassau County I don't know. Why you can't attack a person's points without rewording them I don't know. Let's just say I'm wrong and Dick Cheney is da devil. You win, chief.
On the eighth day, He created Queenz.

Earmarks? GOP hates them. So the small number in earmarks will now cover everything? $300 million in earmarks? Last I heard it was way smaller. How does everything else get paid for in Nassau? Tell me. Nassau is broke. TOH is morally bankrupt. Problem is you just hope for the best and offer no facts in reality that will work. When logic overrides your hope you can't deal, have NO answers and try to be funny.
On the 9th day Cheney went hunting and shot someone that dumb F. Too bad your pal Kate wasn't with him that day.

i'm reading the wsj today and there's an article on the tapan zee bridge in regards to the need to replace it. in a nut shell the state is going to need at least $7bil to replace it and to get the bridge they want add another $8bil, so they need another $16-17 billion
why mention this?
because as we sit hear and blame kate murray and the financial mess in nassau (or the perceived mess) that there is no money etc etc
we just watched barak obama spend trillions of dollars
why hasn't our beloved senators 2 democrats who had allot of power step up and say give me 20 billion dollars for NY because we put your ass in the white house?
then NY can get the bridge we need and throw a few hundred million nassau's way and throw in a new arena?
we have no one to blame but ourselves our senators did a bad job for NY
don't want to go into a political rant but.....whats Chuck Schumer doing? this guy is doing nothing for NY

There's earmarks and corruption on both sides. I vote for the GOP for my own reasons but lets keep the thread respectful with lighthearted humor and sarcasm or it will have to be closed. We try to stay away from politics.

I have been begging for him to debate merit but he's so hot and angry against the GOP (it's in every thread, as the GOP have Deb Kaufman showing less dessert). It's repulsive the level of hatred, I'm sad to say. I laugh at Clinton and Barack and get angry, but RW'ers don't go to the level of wishing harm. Now defensemen.....
Can anyone find the exact sum set aside and ready to be spent on the NVMC renovation?

"Sorry, you gotta move and we're fining your coach for not controlling the bathroom lines." Once again, Nassau's out of the picture.
If you haven't noticed, the state is also a huge fiscal mess who are cutting school aid and other things much more important than a hockey arena. If Wang wants to build just another arena he is gonna have to pay for all of it on his own and we all know that isn't gonna happen.
As far as extending the current lease, I don't see that ever happening. He still claims to be losing money every year and extending the current lease isn't gonna change that. He certainly isn't gonna sign players like Tavares, Okposo, Bailey and the rest what they are gonna ask for when their current contracts are up or add to the payroll while claiming to lose money. The last thing I want is for them to extend the lease only to run the organization on the cheap and have to trade away the good young players we are developing now.

Actually, I don't remember him saying anything about how much money he has or hasn't been making since they restructured the lease...he's coming up on one full year of full control though. I remember the Forbes article recently that had a number much much less than the $20mil he was claiming before.

Note on the bottom says "as of last completed season" ...he only got the new lease with a month or so left in last season.
Curious to see what happened after this one.

Thank you.....
And in the future, Forbes will reflect HOCKEY revenue, excluding events and the moneys accrued through them.
Ge loses $20+M by not counting the cable revenue, which Forbes DOES count, FWIW.

"clearly it's Rick DiPietro's stupidity that's put the islanders in this situation getting into an altercation when a game was over..." Keith Jones on VS

Ive been a fan since im 6 yrs old...Im 31..I dont know what to do right now..
I really dont believe theres much of a chance they are staying here...But 2015 is still a ways away so who knows what can happen in between now and then...
So the problem I have is how much do I still follow this team? Do I start to slowly detatch myself from them now so it hurts less come summer of 15?...I dono
I feel like this right now...i want them to stay..badly..People my age got it the worst with this team..We just missed the glory years and have been stuck with 20+ years of garbage and we have to look at the banners and hear the stories of how the isles used to be great.
So seeing the islanders move is the last thing in sports I want...Build something somewhere in the NY area and for the love of god become a stanley cup contender..Thats what I want.
But if that cant happen would Quebec just please buy out the coliseum lease and take them this july. After years of this the worst ending will be to deal with a lame duck team for the nxt 4 yrs..Having to wonder if im watching a team with a terminal illness.
Quebec just take them now so I and we can move on
