GREAT JOB MSG, specifically Al Trautwig who UNLIKE Pierre McGuire, showed
AND talked about the headshot to Comeau by Talbot and the laughing by Marc Andre Fleury
which pissed off our Islanders.

Al also was hard on Mario Lemieux calling his comments "EXCESSIVE".

I'm glad that SOME people in the media watch alot of what BUILT UP instead of
the chicken head douchebags like Pierre McGuire who only look at stats and jump
on their soap boxes.

Thank you Al Tratwig. I take back everything bad I ever said about you.
Well, not everything.

:yea:

BTW, Dave Maloney and Joe Michelletti are being very critical of Gillies and Martin's actions.
Rightfully so.

in regards to marios statement..which was strong indeed...I can't wait to see the pens reaction in the next meeting bet the two...I wonder if the pens bring up more goons for that game...we shall see if that game is a "travesty" too in marios eyes..

Great post 3POTI

Seriously Mario?

This would hold more weight if he called out certain players on the pens (cooke) for thier cheapshots. But I guess it's ok until someone does it to you.

Mario is way out of line. I guess Ulf Samuelsson, Kevin Stevens, and Rick Tocchet never did anything like that protecting his ass, right? Jackass...

Just looked at the Pens first Cup team's roster. There's a player named Jay Caufield on their roster, you ever hear of him? If you haven't it's because he scored 0 goals and 0 assists on that team for the season. He did rack up 175 mins in penalties. I'm sure he was really out there because he could play the game.

why can't garth speak out like that? sure he said stuff like he liked the way the team played, they were ready for the game..it was 6-0 before that stuff happened..and I believe the first fight was actually bet godard and gillies..with godard initating it..and the score was 3-0?? don't remember much..

have to get this one out...talbot upset about martin hitting from behind, more like a slap..but he is saying he's a guy that would go toe to toe,and not back down..I'm sorry but, I didn't know turtling was a new form of fighting a man..

I can't wait for the rematch...might even go for that one..round 2 ding..

Mario's statement. What a puss...

Quote:

NEW YORK -- Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux said the NHL failed in its punishment of the New York Islanders following a fight-filled game between the teams -- and went so far as to question whether he wanted to stay in the league.

Lemieux, who had a Hockey Hall of Fame playing career with the Penguins, issued a statement Sunday in which he bashed the league's handling of the aftermath of Friday night's 9-3 Islanders victory in which there were 346 penalty minutes, 10 ejections, 15 fighting majors and 20 misconducts.

“ If the events relating to Friday night reflect the state of the [NHL], I need to rethink whether I want to be a part of it. ”
-- Mario Lemieux

"Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be. But what happened Friday night on Long Island wasn't hockey. It was a travesty," Lemieux said. "It was painful to watch the game I love turn into a sideshow like that."

The NHL suspended New York forwards Trevor Gillies for nine games and Matt Martin for four and hit the team with a $100,000 fine late Saturday night, saying the Islanders "must bear some responsibility for their failure to control their players."

Lemieux, who bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999 and ended his playing career during the 2005-06 season, said the sanctions weren't nearly enough.

"The NHL had a chance to send a clear and strong message that those kinds of actions are unacceptable and embarrassing to the sport. It failed," he said. "We, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players. We must make it clear that those kinds of actions will not be tolerated and will be met with meaningful disciplinary action.

"If the events relating to Friday night reflect the state of the league, I need to rethink whether I want to be a part of it."

The NHL stood by the punishments handed out by league disciplinarian Colin Campbell.

"We are entirely comfortable with how Friday night's events were handled," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. "We have no other response to Mr. Lemieux's statement."

Pittsburgh forward Eric Godard was the only member of the Penguins' organization to be punished by the NHL. He received an automatic 10-game suspension because he left the bench to join a fight between New York's Micheal Haley and Penguins goalie Brent Johnson.

Pittsburgh also avoided a fine by the league. That drew the ire of Islanders general manager Garth Snow.

"When I saw the suspensions on both sides and the fines, I was a little bit surprised it was just our club that got fined," Snow said Sunday before the Islanders played at Buffalo. "You can ask the league about it. There's nothing we can do about it but put it behind us and get ready for Buffalo."

Snow said he had no intention to appeal the league's decision, but noted that no Islanders player left the bench to take part in a fight.

"I'm very proud that our team showed restraint," Snow said. "We came to play hockey and obviously, there's a lot of things that happen in the course of a game. I'm proud of the way our team competed, and I'm going to support my guys."

Asked if the punishment was fair, Snow said Campbell had a tough job and he would never criticize him.

"I respect the process," Snow said. "It was a professionally run process."

Campbell held disciplinary hearings with three Islanders players Saturday at the team's hotel in Buffalo. All but Zenon Konopka of that group received suspensions.

The two major brawls Friday night were sparked by Martin and Gillies.

The first broke out in the second period when Martin jumped Maxime Talbot from behind near center ice and started a fight, presumably in retaliation for an unpenalized hit delivered by Talbot on Feb. 2 against Islanders forward Blake Comeau, who hasn't played since because of a concussion.

In that previous meeting, Johnson also knocked down counterpart Rick DiPietro with one punch to the face, leaving the Islanders goalie out for four to six weeks because of facial fractures.

During the third period Friday, Gillies charged after Penguins forward Eric Tangradi and hit him high with an elbow before landing several punches. From the tunnel leading to the Islanders dressing room, Gillies then taunted Tangradi once the Pittsburgh player got up on his skates. Tangradi was diagnosed with a concussion, and he sat out Sunday's game against the New York Rangers.

Already dealing with a growing number of concussions, including one to Penguins captain Sidney Crosby that has kept him sidelined since early January, the NHL is taking serious measures to punish head contact.

"The actions by the Islanders' Gillies and Martin were deliberate attempts to injure by delivering blows to the head of players who were unsuspecting and unable to defend themselves," Campbell said in a statement announcing the suspensions.

"The message should be clear to all players: targeting the head of an opponent by whatever means will be dealt with by suspension."

I look forward to the stern lecture Matt Cooke will receive from Mario when he returns from his suspension. And I'm sure Mario has told him, "next time you pull a stunt like that, I'm releasing you."

Does Mario realize that if he walks away from the game...AGAIN...no one outside of Pittsburgh will care?

He's apparently still pissed at Kasper for slapping him around in 93

Any team that has a player penalized for being the first or second player to leave the players’ or penalty bench during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation, shall be fined ten thousand dollars ($10,000) for the first instance. This fine shall be increased by five thousand dollars ($5,000) for each subsequent occurrence over the next following three-year period.

So "colon"(the part of the large intestine that extends from the cecum to the rectum) why weren't the pittsburg pussies fined the 10 grand for godard leaving the bench.
Just wondering :letssee:

LOL...are they kidding?

Of course Pens fans will come for the rematch...who the fff wants to stay in Pitt? Seriously I constantly meet people who USED to live in Pittsburgh but now live somplace else. I never meet anyone FROM Pitt who is "just visiting".

Pittsburgh is the most sanctimonious fan base ever. They constantly go on about how their Steelers and Pens are somehow "more moral" and just better people, better owners, better fans than anywhere else...but just 4 years ago that franchise was in danger of being in KC.

If Sid doesn't lace them up again due to the concussions, that fanbase disappears again within a year.

They cry about their players getting suckered when Cooke ended Bergeron's career and Samuelsson ended CAm Neeley's with a knee on knee. Spare me Pitt. Go cheer for your rapist QB you wanted gone in August you frauds.

Mario had McSorley and Tochett (2 of the dirtiest players ever) to protect his butt and employs Cooke now and he talks?

Hypocrite.

If Pitt didn't tank to get Mario and Crosby/Malkin they're the Islanders.... without the dynasty,

Nobody went to games in Pitt or cared before the tanking.

Tanks a lot.

Ron Cook can be a real D-bag as well.

Lemieux believes the NHL should have been tougher with its penalties. He understood that Penguins enforcer Eric Godard had to be suspended for 10 games because he left the bench to rush to Johnson's defense when Haley attacked him. But it troubled him that Gillies got a lesser suspension -- nine games -- for the incident with Tangradi. It infuriated him that Martin was given four games for his assault on Talbot, which brought back sad memories of a similar blind-side punch thrown by Vancouver's Todd Bertuzzi at Colorado's Steve Moore in 2004 which left Moore with a broken neck after he fell to the ice. Talbot was luckier than Moore because he saw Martin coming at the last second."

Really?? Martin's hit similar to Todd Bitchtuzzi?? Talk about seeing life through black and gold eyes. (and I don't care for him, being a Steelers fan).

Write this dick and tell'em to open his frick'n eyes and get a clue.

"Although other team owners have been fined by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for criticizing the league, indications were strong Monday that would not be the case for Lemieux."

SHOCK AND SUPRISE!!!

Speaking of the double standard. Here is the NHL's darling, Sid the Kid getting no fine or suspension for his actions in this attached video.

If you ask me, Crosby's actions in this video are much worse then what Martin or Gillies did.

Crosby the class act

It is time for Gary Bettman to declare the Islanders are in a State of Emergency and the NHL will simply
not allow the current ownership to maintain the franchise as currently neglected.

don't know if this was mentioned but on espn Barry Melrose ALSO stuck up for the Islanders.

Barry was on with Matt Barnaby (x-pen X Rag) and Barry said:

you can not make any comparison to what Bertuzzi did to Moore and what Matt Martin did to Talbot

first time offenders Gillies & Martin where dealt harshly by the NHL

and the fact that the Penguins where laughing at the Islanders as Blake Comeau and DiPietro where knocked out previous game

and the non call non suspension of Talbot's hit on Comeau

Thank you Mr Melrose!

it was espn.com "the rant"

Hi there! As this is my first post I will keep it short. (Been an avid fan since the 70's btw) I have been reading the posts on this subject since 5 minutes after the game and have noticed that nobody seems to have noticed the blatant elbow thrown at Matt Moulson immediately following his first goal in the second period. This elbow was directed at his head with intent. The guilty party would be none other than Eric Godard. This actually is the most upsetting to me as Colon said ,"hits directed at the head with intent to injure" being the key reasons for both Martin's and Gillies's suspensions, when Godard clearly is guilty of the same. I had a lot of other things to say but i would just be repeating a ton of things that have already been posted.

Thanks for reading. Sorry for the tardiness of this post, registration just completed. :)

Welcome SniperGod. Sorry for the delay, I was out of town for a couple of days. You're right, I read very little regarding the elbow. I guess when you don't go down in a crumpled mess, and score a goal at the same time, it doesn't seem as serious, even though it was completely intentional on Godard's part. And regardless if it injures a player or not, the intent was there.
I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

i totally agree with this. this brawl should be blamed on the nhl & "colon" campbell because it is the nhl front office that is inconsistent. imo campbell should be fired he is not capable of doing his current job.

A friend told me they saw that on the local news but I haven't heard a thing.
