Hypothetical situation here, but...

If the NHL was calling dirty hits the same way 4 years ago, would the Simon/Hollpig incident have happened?

I always said it was a hit from behind. If it was deemed a dirty hit, the whistle would have blown and there would have been no chance for Simon to attack.

Here's the hit:

What do you all think? Would this hit be dirty enough today to get a penalty called right away?

I wish I could remember the hilarious stuff Depot was saying that day

I was never more angry at fellow Isles fans all around the net getting on their high horses
and their soap boxes while caling for Simons head. It WAS a despicable act by Simon.
However, Ryan Hollpig, the repeat offender who had already built a rep for hitting people from behind targeted Simon a 2nd time after the initial hit.

Then from a friend who works for the Rags and is a Rag fan, even told me... the next day at practice, Hollpig joked about staying down to draw the extra penalty. He was fine.

The 2 hander (not a BASEBALL swing like some IDIOTS said) hands apart on the stick,
made initial contact with Hollpig's chest then chin.
Too bad, wish it would have gotten him in the teeth.

I'm sorry, still a sore point for me. Reading the crap from assholes who know nothing about hockey in the media condemning Simon and hockey for that incident was bad enough, but the lunacy from hockey fans made it just as sad. I guess it hurt most because we should have won that game.

Hmm.. Hot form behind and then a retaliatory bonehead thug play? See Clutterbuck, DiBenedetto and Gillies.

wouldn't matter. Hollpig was a Ranger...they can do whatever they want without punishment.
I miss these :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: and want more of them

The hit was dirty but a real man drops his gloves. Sorry Steve. Simon was a disgrace and didn't he try to step on someone's ankles with his skates after the suspension too? Sorry Steve. Simon was a loser and a disgrace to this franchise. Okay, enough of the wonderful memories.

If Simon were on this team...Hollpig wouldn't have been skating past him. He would've gotten jumped by Haley, Dibo (if up) or Konopka before Simon hit the ice the first time.

In my opinion, though, (don't bash me, just how I see it), Simon was so clearly concussed and out of it that he tried to do the "let's go" cross check, but just didn't have the proprioception to coordinate it correctly.

Mike, I love ya.
You know that. But I sort of disagree while I also agree with you.
(since when did I ever make sense anyway?)

When Simon "stomped" on Ruutu, Ruutu was shown smiling on the bench a few shifts later.
I remember the same season, towards the end of the year,

Ruutu didn't deserve that though many say he did. Simon was no angel and for that, each time he created an incident, his reputation and poor judgment preceded him.

Chris Pronger has a MUCH worse "stomp" that year against Kesler but he didn't get 30 games like Simon did.

I felt bad for Simon. Really did. His anger issues got the best of him but the league disciplinarian was never more bias than he was against Simon, no matter how deserving.

I was at that game with Mike. That was completely sick. If Simon is just inches lower and gets Hollicrap in the throat he's dead. I couldn't believe he did that. Simon had issues but he was a TNTP (ted nolan type player). Good to see Nolan in that vid.

Hollicrap was SIMONized.
John Tavares was 2 years old the last time NYI won a playoff series

This is a great thread. Really brings me back to around that time when people were complaining about how these types of hits were going unpunished and the players were not allowed to police themselves. Hollwig was a dirty joke of a player, god I hated him. Was so happy that Simon did that, even though it was wrong. He should have just grabbed him and beat him senseless, but whatever. The Ruutu incident was inexcuseable. Chris Simon is a troubled individual, but in his own mind I don't think he was knowingly doing anything wrong. He was a decent hockey player too. It's a shame he's going to be remembered for the bad rather than the good.

I think this is one of the threads.
...prior to suspension, Snowy called it...said that they'd throw the book at him.

I said something about being glad that Hollpig needed a tampon for his chin.

maybe the rule should be if you see the numbers/last name you can not hit the player from behind-makes sense?

it's Chris Simon's fault after that hit he should have hit the ice like he was shot

to me a hit from behind is a flat out dirty play
