Many of us, including myself were not in favor of this hiring simply because of where the organization was at that point in time. We "needed" an experienced, respected NHL coach...or did we ?

Now that the dust has settled, we must reconsider our issues with Garth's selection.

It really appears that he has formed this young team into a very tight knit group who seem to care about each other and the Islanders logo. They seem to know how to close out a game or better yet, go into a game knowing they can win every night.

Since he's come on board, we have been absolutely decimated by additional injuries and rejection by the rest of the league but somehow we are a much better team with him behind the bench.

Where are the rest of you on this guy ?

Is he the great hockey mind we've needed to get us back to respectability or is he just riding a team playing with no pressure down the stretch ?

I think he is doing a very respectful job, and has the team believing in itself. I would hire him full time, no problem with that

I like what he has done, but it is only a small sample. Yes, he has created a tightly knit group. Some of his in game decisions are questionable, especially who he has on the ice at certain times.

We will never agree totally on how good or bad a coach is, but I think he has, at the very least, earned consideration to have the interim tag removed.

If some well known, well respected coach falls into our lap we need to consider it.

But we're the Islanders, so they are going to exhaust every other option before they take the dread job (which unfortunately is us).

Based on that, we could have done much worse than this guy. He is making the most of his opportunity, he is cheap and doesn't make waves. I expect him to be our coach next year for the full season.

I don't know if I'd hire him for next season until we see how the last 25 games go. It's easy to love everything about the team during a winning streak, but if we lose 3 or 4 in a row will you feel the same?

I'd give more credit to Zenon for that.

I don't think he is the answer long term but tat is just my opinion.
I don't like him. What I do LIKE ABOUT HIM, is that unlike the previous egomaniac,
Capuano has allowed the guys to stay on specific lines and play to their strengths without forcing a system that didn't benefit them.

Is he the answer long term? The fact that he's an upgrade over Gordon isn't much of selling point.
But as I mentioned a long time ago...it doesn't matter how well he does or not down the stretch, he WILL be the next head coach because he comes as the cheapest.

I'd be shocked if an experienced NHL coaching team is brought in while Wang is in the midst of Mario Lemieuxing over his mini city real estate failure.

The jury is still out for me but winning and losing streaks aside, I am most impressed with the results he's produced with this depleted roster under this poorly run organization.

All he has done is overachieve !

Good point.
We've been through this before though and we praise them all.
But the key is to do this at the start of the year, not when the pressure is off.

I want to see an Islanders team over achieve in october-november-december
before I jump on the coaching staffs bandwagon.

I agree with Nick, I think the challenge and leadership of Konopka has just as much to do
with the team playing for each other and pride as it has to do with the coach.

I just hope they keep it up because this last week has been outrageously entertaining.

Now you KNOW we're playing well and fun to watch when Steve-o doesn't go off on a 400 word rant when the coach of the NY Islanders is discussed. :D

Just kidding, I agree, outrageously entertaining is a very accurate description. Let's hope it's a 25 game joy ride.

You can call me Joe.
I'm pretty skeptical -- in a foxhole, you tend to make close friends, so I don't know if I'd credit Capuano with the team bonding as much as them HAVING to come together (nowhere to go but up), plus some veteran leaders, including Z from what we hear outside the room.

Is the guy a genius to let the players play to their strengths vs. insisting on an untenable system?

I would probably still prefer a veteran coach, but my money is on Capuano losing the "interim" tag after this season as long as the team keeps battling every night / they don't go 8-16....

rifle, I sense a love train thread in our future.

I would, but my last 3 or 4 LOVE TRAIN attempts have failed miserably. The mojo is not gone, but is on hiatus.

I don't wanna jinx them.

I'll just make sure I sit in the same place on the couch, scratch my nose after every goal and stomp three times after each period.

I am very superstitious.....

I want the best......but.....

Potvin was behind him.
He's winning.
He began with the team where that chicken **it worm Bylsma did.
Our scoring is up big.
Despite goalies who belong in the ECHL being our starters, we're winning.
Konopka is leading - and ALLOWED TO (Scrotum Gorton wouldn't allow for that)
Morale is up big.
Players are fighting hard each game.
Lines are clicking and kept together when they WORK (another FU to Gorton)

I'm liking him more and more. We could do worse. If he was our coach from the get go, we're not looking at a draft lottery. Wiz and Rollie were probably kept as our record would have been MUCH better without Jimmy "Don't Blame The" System's crippling reign of error.

He reminds me of Nolan, without the meddling of Snow to cause misery on the bench.

I don't want him back. I'll be blunt about that. This team makes way too many head scratching plays and decisions with the puck, the powerplay may have its good games but it's sloppy, and there is just too much general sloppiness that I honestly don't believe would happen under a more experienced coach.

HOWEVER (and this is a big however), I think that if this team ever again reaches prominence, Jack Capuano will have a piece of that because this team has come together under his watch and they are playing a lot more like professionals with him at the helm. I know there is a lack of talent that he cannot do anything about, but it seems like the players respond to him. Maybe he earns another year or two. If this team ever becomes a top team again, I honestly feel that he won't be the coach. But he may be the coach to get them to come together as a young unit and then turn the team over to a guy who can take them to another level. We'll see how they finish the season.

The one situation I do NOT want to be in is to get off to a bad start next year and have people calling for his head. The Mets did it with Jerry Manuel last year and it was a mistake. It's better to start camp under a new regime if it's going to happen at all.

Hard to tell with that 80's feathered cut :rotflmao:
