Jack Capuano; Is he the real deal ?

I guess if Snow is a grown up, legit NHL GM, we should aspire to the absolute best coach available.

But since this is the Isles, Capuano might be the best bang for the buck and won't question anyone above, so if there's better that fits the Isles criteria (cheap and obedient) then I'm all for it.

But Capuano might be that guy. What if he's Bylsma league (though I hate that rat twirp)?

We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann

While I agree this team plays harder and better now than it did under Gordon, whose fault is it that we play so sloppy? Even in games we win we never play crisp hockey. It seems like guys are freelancing sometimes, they don't know where they are supposed to be or where the guy they're passing to is supposed to be. The powerplay is absolutely dreadful. The penalty kill has been alright. On the 1st of March, I still want a new coach brought it from the outside. An experienced coach.

There's the if....if we had a legit GM, we go after the best coach we can. If....that and $21M can buy you an Islander roster.

The million dollar question is whether Snow wants to go cheap or if Wang forces him to go cheap. I think we all know it's Wang. Any evidence points to that. I highly doubt that Snow wants to decrease the size of the hockey operations staff just so he can go do more scouting personally. Cappy is going to stay. I've already come to grips with that. I just don't want him back.

Steve Sterling did a better job than that vaginal cleansing pouch with spigot Gorton. Capuano just happend to be miles ahead of both. Now imagine what that says about Gorton compared to the many coaches chided when Gorton was the "give him a chance" posterboy du jour.

Although I would rather a proven coach, I would'nt scream if Cappy was retained as long as they brought in 2 solid veterans that can still play at a pretty high level. This way any issues can be dealt with by the players first and Cappy could lean on them as he learns on the job. Dont see it happening, though.

I wouldn't mind that scenario. We can all pontificate about our ideal scenario but
under the current circumstances, that one would be an improvement.

Just change "can still play" to "top line players" and I agree.

Weight, Guerin, Witt, Park, Eaton, Sillinger, these are guys that could still play.

Tanguay, Holmstrom, Gonchar, Hejduk, Ott, MacArthur...these are guys that ARE still playing. Two of these instead of two in Wang's Column A and this team doesn't sink like a pop star once injuries hit.

On the bright side, we no longer have Overstink. This summer we have choices.....an interim coach can be replaced and our top nine up front can be GREATLY solidified (helping EVERY player accomplish more).

Or not. Our whole roster next year can get lace bite.

Yesterdays NY Post had this on Cappy. Good read, and I agree with most of the article.

Which brings me to my point.

I think the guy deserves a shot next season. Perhaps a 1 year deal with a club option for a second so he's not a lame duck.

The reasons?

He has this team playing well above any expectations. I supported Gordon, but this guy is 1,000 times better. He has managed through injury, no trade deadline acquisitions, key players (Wisnewski and Roloson) being moved and a team that obviously had motivation or concentration issues.

And he has handled all of it admirably.

And the players have genuine RESPECT for the guy.

I say, give him a year with an option. He not only deserves it, he has earned it.

sometimes you're the bug.

Take the same approach you take with any player that succeeds for the first time. Give him a one year contract and let him prove he's for real.

Moulson got his money. Grabner is going to get his 1 year this summer, Cappy should too.

I think it is worth it for the Islanders to r\try to go for a 3 or 4 year deal with Grabner. Buy out his RFA year and then keep the cost reasonable when he is potting 40 goals regularly. If not, then they can trade a past 30 goal scorer with a fair contract.
