IT COULD BE WORSE

THATS AS POSITIVE AS IT GETS ;)

We have to keep the debate going.
5 months to kill! Lots of signings to go with RFA's.
Then free agency begins and the "why not us" mentality takes over.
Then we go mental when no one signs here worth anything only
to be fed excuses from the grand high exalted mystic ruler...Garth Snow.

5 months. 5.

:o

OR WAS THIS YOUR APPLICATION FOR THE PRESS BOX FOR NEXT SEASON?

no tom, it came directly from XMHomeIce radio.

give it a listen occassionally. You'll find out lots of interesting things.

Snowman:  Intelligent, well thought out post that also shows your passion for the team.

For some of you, no matter what you may read or hear, your opinions of management will never change.  that's a shame.  You let your personal prejudices close your mind and only see things as you assume they are.

"The Rebuild" is a valid hockey model used by a few teams.  It's not a matter of being cheap or inept, but a model of building. it's just a painful model.

hopefully it will only be a year or two befor the pain stops.

Dee, we know about a "rebuild".
We know it's a "valid hockey model".

You have to get worse before you get better. We know htis and have discussed it ad nauseum for years.
However, the cheapie cheapie sh!t nullifies the model and is only compounded by the propaganda and excuses.

Shall I list everything?

Steve, don't look at it as 5 months. Just 8 weeks till the draft, then 1 week later we watch the FA ticker to see 29 other teams make signings, while we watch our veteran leadership sign elsewhere(Konopka), then the summer ice tour will be at a location near you each week of the summer, then 4 more weeks before we actually sign a FA for veteran leadership. then before you know it we'll hear all about how DP is in the best shape of his life for sept camp, watch Garth claim the next Grabner, sign the next Moulson and we'll be ready to start the season. It'll be here before you know it.

Nobody would be complaining if managements genius play-in playoff proposal hadn't been laughed off the table by the other GM's in the league last year :P
I'm still hoping for the Sumo goalie too :):)

Seriously tho... nice thread Snowy...

Finishing eighth and drafting in the middle of rounds is not a death sentence. Ranger fans are using that as a crutch.

Go take a look at the last eleven drafts by the Isles and tell me how many NHL players they got out of it, let alone guys who actually played for the Islanders. I don't really care where you draft but you've got to do better than Ryan O'Marra and Wes O'Neill.

The Isles fell apart after the 2005 season because their previous 4 years worth of draft picks (all rounds) blew chunks PLUS MM stood pat with his 2001-2002 core roster.

There are no quick fix UFA defensemen out there this summer. This team was 20 points out of a playoff spot this year. If you think they'll make that up with this same roster and the gimp squad defensemen (who weren't very good when they got hurt), I think you'll be back next year telling me how 2012-2013 is really the "make or break" year. And you'll mean it this time.

Au contraire!

We still follow and bash hoping they'll change but they never do. When they change we'll change. Them saying anything is useless based on the track record. Just do it. Talk is cheap. So are NYI.

Forbes latest report had 14 NHL clubs losing money. 4 of them lost more money than NYI. Only NYI has the lowest payroll and has perfected the art of cheapness everywhere.

I can't LISTEN to the radio show. The range is too weak. (Not everyone lives with a computer next to them 24/7.) THAT'S THE DAMN PROBLEM!!! Hello? Think McFly!!!

Cholly's chubby son being a boy scout or cub scout doesn't count as scouts! :goofy2:

Spend something to change our minds. We're waiting to stop bashing.......

But to justify all that is comical.

John Tavares was 2 years old the last time NYI won a playoff series

Ranger fans aren't using it as a crutch. In fact, Ranger fans feel that their prospects are equal to/better than the Islanders prospects. A bunch of horseshit if you ask me, but in speaking to many of them that's what they think. The point was that they are saying "all they need is scoring and they'll be set". The point was that its nearly impossible to find elite scoring in this league these days.

I'm not concerned with any of the Milbury drafts. The Islanders drafted like garbage under Milbury. They didn't fare much better under Maloney except for like one season and under Bill Torrey throughout the 80s they weren't good either. I made a thread awhile back stating that was the main reason why the team took a nosedive in the early 90s. What I am concerned with are Garth Snow's drafts. We can use the 07 draft for example. The only players worth mentioning are Katic, Gregoire, and Kessel. No home runs with those picks, but they'll at the very least add depth to the system. The 2008 draft by the Islanders is going to go down as one of the great draft years by a single team as far as turning out NHLers. And right now the 09 draft is looking very good too with Tavares, de Haan, Koskinen, both Anders (Nilsson and Lee), and Cizikas.

As far as the rest of the stuff, I'm not sure if that's directed toward me or not. If it is, there are about 15 defensemen on the free agent market who are better than Eaton, Jurcina, or Hillen. Anyway, did I say they would make up 20 points with their same roster? If you've been reading here much lately (I know you haven't been posting much because I would have noticed), you'd know that I have been adament about this team needing to upgrade their D if they want to have a shot at the playoffs next year. Again, not sure who that last paragraph was directed to, but in case it was me.

It wasn't directed at you, Snowy. I thought your original post was well thought out. Perhaps a little too rosy in my opinion but that's an opinion only.

My thoughts are a general statement that this roster is a long way from the eight spot. There will be loads of excuses and plausible deniability if the summer doesn't bring a marked improvement in the defense and goaltending. Just like I've been reading about for this past season (injuries, lost man-games and assorted boo hooing).

imo i think your wrong. Streit comes back and already you have an improved defense. make a deal or two and add some toughness and grit and of course talent that makes the defense better. use your #5 overall pick on Dougie Hamilton and the Islanders can make up those 20 some odd points.

i think this team needs a little toughness some grit and you'll have yourself a playoff team and you don't need big name big money UFA's

You forgot about the drama with mr 39 games over 3 years.

The reduced icetime for guys who thrived with INCREASED icetime this past year under NO pressure
will hamper their productivity when their is pressure to produce and mirror if not improve upon production.

Save this post. Save it and let's check back. We are no where near a bona fide playoff team even when healthy and that is great part due to the caveat of mr. "who are we talking about".

Remember this post.

I agree 100% Lex. Especially when you watch the playoffs this year, as I'm sure you've been watching also, these playoff teams all have very good defensive units. I think the defense has been more impressive than the goaltending in these playoffs. The way these teams have been grinding it out has been fun to watch. Man, playoff hockey is awesome! But, as we see year after year, you don't need one great defenseman to succeed. What you need is two or three very good defensemen and follow them up with steady, reliable guys on your bottom 3. In Streit (if healthy), I think that's a good start. MacDonald and Hamonic got great experience and minutes this year, and maybe in 2 or 3 years we can boast that they are our Keith and Seabrook. But going into next season, they aren't on that level. We definitely need at least one guy to pair with Streit. Bieksa would be perfect IMO. We obviously have trouble bringing players here and a reluctancy to open the wallet, so I'm not counting on anything huge. Offensively, adding a playoff veteran in Brooks Laich who is good along the walls would really boost the top 9 forwards. I think that's the one element we're missing up front. Other than that, this team can score goals. And as far as goaltending, as Steve mentioned there's #39.

Definitely was meant to be extra rosy to kind of overcompensate for the added negatives in every other aspect of the organization. I really do like our prospects.

What kills me is we take two steps forward, three steps back and our tight unit loses Zenon (lockerroom not as tight?) and potentially our best "ready" goalie Montoya if Rick and A-Hole are our starters (he has to clear waivers if reassigned) and we do God knows what to our young talent.

This could be the 2002 to our 2001......a year we expected much better and got awful management of assets to ruin the year.

I was optimistic (VERY!) until I started hearing rumbles of what our illustrious GM/owner team had in store. Now....I'll believe we're on the right track when I see it.

"But the Coliseum became a repository for all the team's troubles, a convenient scapegoat. There were suggestions that no major free agent ever would set foot in such a decrepit place.
