Here we are again at this wonderful point in the hockey season where we draw a line in the sand. Half the fans will root like hell for the Isles tonight to get a victory. Some of those fans will do so because they can't bring themselves to ever root against their own team. I can appreciate that. The others who will not root for a loss because "it builds character going forward", that one always makes me laugh. It's been proven year after year that those end of the season wins we've gotten the previous three years have done NOTHING for the team going forward. Doesn't build character, doesn't mean a thing. Then there are the other half of fans. The fans who view these last two games of the season as meaningless for the team (not meaningless for individual players who may be going for personal milestones, ie: John Tavares). The fans who don't want two points to cost our team one or two spots in the draft. Now granted, in 08-09 I was rooting like hell for losses in late January because I wanted Tavares. We got him. This season was different. The team made a great run late, but fell short. I have bigger dreams of one day having my team win division titles and becoming a Stanley Cup contender. In any given draft, the 7 pick may turn out better than the #1 and #2 picks (like this season), but overall I'd rather not take that chance. Plus, if we were to use this pick as a trade chip, the #3 pick is more valuable than the #5 pick. Not an absurd thought if a player like Rick Nash becomes available. So once again we're in this position. Once again I will root for my team to score a lot of goals, but to lose in regulation. I do it because I love my team. |

I believe around 50% of the lottery winners have been some team other than the lowest team. |

Well we have no shot at the 30th spot. We also cant get #3. If we get 1 point or less we'll be 4th. If we win and Ottawa gets 1 point I also believe we'll be 4th. I have to admit, I got to the game tonight and the crowd was so electric that I did root for the Isles. The Penguins fans were obnoxious and they lit a fire under my ass. Oh well. I am definitely rooting 100% for a loss against Philly tomorrow. Slightly better odds in the lottery, guarantees us of picking either 4 or 5 (instead of 5 or 6). That's the most important thing, if the Isles really like Couturier (I dont know if they do or not) then he most likely would be gone at 4. Maybe Ryan Murphy, maybe Justin Huberdeau, maybe Landeskog or Larsson slip... who knows. |

Currently this is how the lottery odds stack up. 48.2% - Edmonton Oilers 18.8% - Colorado Avalanche 14.2% - Florida Panthers 10.7% - New York Islanders 8.1% - Ottawa Senators Just FYI.

I'll take that as long as it stays that way. #4 pick in this draft is very good. We'd be looking at a number high-skill offensive players (including Ryan Murphy who is a D). Right now, Ottawa trails Boston 2-1 in the 2nd period. If Ottawa fails to record a point today, an Islanders win tonight would bump them down to 5th. Things to keep an eye on... |

Want to lose tonight. Get in the top 4. Isles pick 4th we will prob wind up with Sean Couturier. But losing tonight also gives us a slightly better shot at winning the lottery. Heres to a loss....and to making the playoffs next season. |

After tonight's games, let's update the threads headline to DRAFT LOTTERY DISCUSSION. Let's all remember, while we can move up a total of 4 spots with a lottery win, should a team behind us win, we (and any other team) can only move down 1 spot. So if we finish 4th worst and someone behind us wins moving up past us, we can draft no worse than 5th. I don't see any impact gem players that could step in next year in this draft so I'm not that excited about it. Been watching the draft boards, ISS rankings, hockey news etct etc...reading on these kids and if we were to be patient with whoever we get, in 3 years we'd have someone to push for a spot. Couturier is a big 6-4 center who is a beanpole. Think Bailey rookie year, just bigger. Great hands, good scorer etc...won't see him on the team till after 2015. Will they be here? |

Steve if nobody updates the thread title by tomorrow I'll do it. As far as NHL ready players go, Gabriel Landeskog, Adam Larsson, Nugent-Hopkins are the only three. Couturier won't be, but I'm sure as always they'd give him a chance in camp to play his way onto the team. Maybe even a 9 game trial. If we went the Ryan Murphy route, he is NHL ready offensively to QB a PP and add offense from the blueline. However, being a defenseman, who knows if he can handle the defensive responsibility. |

It sucks that Couturier stock plummeted. He's another one of those kids with talent, produces yet his coaches want to see him play with more heart and passion. Not enough grit. Is any team to think he can step into an NHL camp because he's already 6'4? You know we'll be essing bricks wondering if Snow pull off a trade, either up or down. |

Let's go for the win. 5th can still move to # 1 with lottery win. IMO 4th or 5th or at worst 6th won't change our pick quality very much. Nugent-Hopkins is the best forward out there and he won't last to #3. (I think he would fit this team best) This is the Islanders we're talking about anyway. A closed door lottery will never have us come in with a lottery win. Might as well screw the Flyers.

His stock has fallen tremendously in the last year, but you'd be surprised to hear that many Oiler fans WANT Couturier. I've been researching the draft a lot over the last month or so, and on many message boards I've heard it time and time again. They feel he's a better fit for their team because of the size to go with the skill, as opposed to RNH who is smaller. I'm sure there are fans of taking RNH, Couturier, and Larsson. Who knows who Edmonton really wants or if they'd trade down. You are right about the possibility of Garth moving the pick though. It's a scary thought. His drop down to 9 in 2008 was scary at the time, but in hindsight what did he really lose out on? Bailey certainly hasn't developed, but the only first round picks drafted 5th and later who you could say you'd definitely want on your team right now are Tyler Myers and Erik Karlsson. Jordan Eberle went 22nd, doesn't really apply here. Nobody really stands out. The trade down got us extra picks. Maybe it was luck, maybe not. Anyway, even with the great scouting of today, the draft is still a crapshoot. Hopefully we get it right, or maybe more importantly maybe we have to hope someone else gets it wrong. |

Yeah, you have to remember that each team's draft board may be drastically different from the ISS rankings. Nobody could have ever predicted the first 10 picks last year. Who knows who the Isles have had their eye on. My buddy made a good point about them signing that junior player last night. The defenseman played for the Kitchner Rangers in the OHL this season. They must have scouted him real well. Just so happens two players projected to go in the top 10 also play for that team, so maybe they're looking to Landeskog or Murphy. |
