So I didn't get Dolansday.....what did it say? It revenue does not come in and inflation falls flat for 30 years, county taxpayers will owe $58 a piece?

How much economic benefit do they get if there is no arena, concerts, spending, vehicle repairs, eating, lodging, fuel purchase, etc.?

Well, at least the paper doesn't take editorial comments unless you pay up for it.
"clearly it's Rick DiPietro's stupidity that's put the islanders in this situation getting into an altercation when a game was over..." Keith Jones on VS

"But the Coliseum became a repository for all the team's troubles, a convenient scapegoat. There were suggestions that no major free agent ever would set foot in such a decrepit place. We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann

For .71 cents per game you can have your NY Islanders stay on Long Island. Or, out of spite and hatred for its owner you can vote down the proposal and risk losing the team forever.

It's not us you have to worry about. It's the people that can't/won't/don't see through the press and their agenda's.

As an example: you think it's a coincidence that commercials are out from the PBA about how "only 10% of your taxes go to public safety" the same week newsday prints articles about police salaries and costs?

It even says in the article that the $58 is if there is $0 revenue contributed by the arena. AND this "study" is before even the revenue sharing agreement is released! It's a slander campaign.

Last I heard, after a few months of the paywall nonsense, at a newsday meeting someone asked how many paid prescriptions they had...the number was 36. 36!

A definite slant on it against the proposal. However, there are points that need to be addressed and some of the pols are bringing it to the attention of the residents. Like the revenue sharing and how will it be allocated to offsetting the tax increase. But overall residents have to decide whether Nassau will be a place that will grow or are it's best days behind them? That's the bottom line. Do they want Nassau not to own a franchise, not host concerts or events, not to have a center of attraction and not care about all the businesses and employees that are associated in and around the coliseum and the Islanders. Let it crumble into a wasteland or do something meaningful for a few sheckles?

Does Nassau County ascend or decline? Taxes will continue to rise regardless, so it would make sense to at least spend the money on something that will make the County better.

In the end, a Nassau resident will see a $58 line on their tax bill and at very least be able to look up a new Coliseum and say "My tax money built THAT" which, unfortunately is almost always lost.

That's the assumption, however...pouting that much money on top of their current debt
also causes many residents' homes to decrease in property value so that 58 bucks to them means nothing when their homes are worth thousands less.

I posted about Kevin A. Hassett's take on this in this thread.

It's NOT just as simple as a 58 buck hit on everyone in Nassau, we keep our team and all is good.
The key will be what details come out and how everyone responds.

advocates would be even wiser to refer to the taxpayers end as $4.83 a month versus the $58/year ;)

You are forgetting that probably 90% of Nassau residents could give a rats ass about the Islanders and NHL Hockey. I doubt most of them care about going to the circus or Ice Capades either. They can always make the 45 minute drive or train ride to MSG to catch the Harlem Globetrotters.

I have an idea, how about Charles Wang picks up the bill for the new stadium and the first 400 million in added tax revenue goes back to him to pay it off...

I know that is never gonna happen though.

They should also consider adding Suffolk county tax payers, the city, and upstate into the mix. The are the New York Islanders, not the Nassau Islanders. Long Islanders have been paying for an unbalanced share of upstate projects for decades. If they tapped every adult in the state the price per head would really be low. New York State is such a political black hole. I couldn't blame the team for moving.

Of course they could, but it's gonna cost them more than $58 extra per trip to do so. Most people I've talked to about this who aren't Islander fans were on the fence, but none of them realized that the Coliseum would be demolished if this doesn't happen. They all just assumed the Coliseum would stay. The fact is that there are many, many people who do care that we have an arena in Nassau County. They just may not care if its new or not. If they have to choose between a new arena or nothing, I think they'll just the new arena. Most of them just don't realize that status quo isn't an option.

If you added all of NY to the vote I think it would fail even worse. Just my opinion.

They should just take the tax money from upstate NY and apply it automatically. Long Island's taxes usually go to pay for stuff upstate. In this instance, it should just be done, no votes. Long Island should just become it's own state, but that's an entirely different topic.

I wouldn't have a vote. Just make them all pay.

New York population = 19,378,102 people

Project cost = $400,000,000

cost per resident of NY = $20.64

I'll write my check for my family's share.

and for all us that are home owners in Nassau, you probably got your tax bill(s) and the one that's outrageous is the school tax-these school districts are out of control when it comes to benefits and salary and the main reason why everyone who lives here pays property taxes of $6k $8k and over what's another 50 bucks? lets see if newsday points this out

and another thing looking at my country toh tax I get it and even being conservative and anti tax we all need to pay for certain things but that school tax bill ouch!

newsday would love and jump up and click their heels if all comes to an end 2015 and the Nassau gop gets the blame for losing the Islanders the NVMC and all those jobs-the day the deal gets killed newwsday will run out and print articles on all the businesses that will be out of business because of no NVMC with a huge finger pointed to Ed Mangano
