Perhaps if you actually knew what the "bankers" were doing, you'd understand why SOME should go to jail. It is called fraud when you tell your investors to invest in certain items but then have internal memos showing the company is actually betting on those items to fail.

BTW- in communist countries they don't have bankers. They have people who work for banks, but the banks are owned by the govt, not investors or even the execs.

If it is such a good gig, why didn't you become a teacher?

I guess ignorance is bliss.

why would i want to be a teacher?? BORING

For one, if you did, you'd know how ignorant this statement was...

That bolded part is probably the dumbest thing someone could say about teaching. I'm often up beyond midnight grading papers during the school year. I get no overtime nor do I want it. But when I add it up, I'm working a sometimes 60 hr work week for my "full time pay for a part time job".

When I get the entire summer off, I actually take classes in the summer WHICH I PAY FOR. This summer in mid July I'll be doing a two week seminar on the Civil War in DC at Ford's Theater and other historic locations. Then in August I'll do another two week seminar at the National Archives & Mount Vernon.

IN addition, I'm raising two kids under the age of three and I coach at our school as well...ice hockey (which is volunteer and I don't get paid despite doing it from Oct-Feb) and golf.

Man, I'm just raping the system, aren't I.

If it is so borring to you, that's fine. But if it isn't something you are willing to do, it takes balls to complain about those who do when you don't know what's involved.
I miss these :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: and want more of them

It's a gig or a calling with teachers. You guys sound like it's your calling. The issue I think many have is, as I4C agreed, the BUSINESS of teaching.

In Cali, land of the bankrupt idiocy, kids get brand new textbookS (two, one for school, one for home) each year. Waste. All over, we have unions and tenure.....which leads to waste. Some great young minds cannot enter the field thanks to tenure, and the best teachers don't get the job, therefore.

Administrators on LI probably earn a combined few dozen million dollars. Why? School lunches, books, pensions, unions, waste in administration and government oversight.....it's a pitfall. ANYTHING the government touches is overpriced and underwhelming save for one entity that works with precision and efficacy better than the private sector:

The IRS.

So one can say they want cuts and taxes lowered and do so without being against the schools and teachers. I'd love to be able to say teachers should get some of the money those administrators are getting, but it won't happen. The administration is where the politics is embraced.

That said, cut one high ranking bureaucrat in each school district and it'll pay for the arena hikes. And the education which is already there waiting to be provided by the teachers will still be there.

Great post. I couldn't agree more!

Of all the descriptions and adjectives used toward the teaching profession, BORING is probably the silliest and most inaccurate word that can be used. I respect the fact that teaching doesn't interest you. And I agree with OTH that teaching often is a calling for a great many teachers and is not for everyone. But seriously, BORING?

That can be dangerous. Those are usually the ones who end up talking to Chris Hanson on NBC.

I had a bunch of idiots this year. My math teacher last year was a huge Isles fan.

My 6th grade social studies teacher was as well. That year was the year we traded for Smyth at the deadline. I had 100 average in that class so when I walked in on deadline day he let me go on his computer and read about the trades all period while the other kids did work.

Try and find out if you can DO the subject, and if you can't, you can be sure you can TEACH the subject.

Could not agree with you more.

No matter how much we agree or disagree about that profession based on our experience,
that is not the term I'd use.
That is a challenging field that requires the patience of a saint. Boring is the wrong adjective
but if someone finds the thought to be such, so be it.

I'm actually a pretty good writer and I've worked with the Isles for the past 2 seasons. They let me sit in the press box in games and then get into the media scrum afterwards for about 7 games a year. Its a really great experience so I'm hoping to do something like that when I get out of college.

So anyone who isn't a teacher cannot have an opinion?

Everyone have a great happy Father's Day, enjoy the weather and your families.

;)

People can have opinions, but having facts to support them would be nice too.

I find it funny that is socially and politically acceptable to complain and clobber teachers but somehow it is blasphemy to criticize corporate leaders and the like. I've never been a doctor or worked in a dr. office but I've gone to Dr's all my life. Does that mean I should tell them how to perform the surgery?

Just because people went to school, doesn't mean they know how to teach or run a school. But that doesn't stop many, espeically politicans from spewing nonsense about the profession or just bashing the profession because it is popular. I'll give you an example of what I mean...

Tons of people complain about "tenure" and what tenure means in the teaching profession. How many people can actually state what tenure is or what it does in the ny state teaching profession? If you can, I'll listen to your thoughts on tenure. If not, like Jack, why bother.

I taught in NY for 10 years and loved it. I taught on LI for one and up near Syracuse for 9 in 3 diff school districts. I saw great schools and weak schools. I saw great teachers in poor schools and bad teachers who needed to go in great ones. And I always hope bad teachers are removed. However, you know what I never seem to hear from the public... what to do about bad parents and bad kids. Remember, we aren't Singapore who our idiot president constantly compares us to. We teach everyone unlike Singapore. We don't get to beat students unlike Singapore (not that I want that power). Bad parents & lazy students don't carry the social stigma here that they do in Asian cultures. This is an example I meant earlier of idiot pols spewing nonsense.

so if someone actually knows what they are talking about, like the issue of tenure, I'll have the discussion. Otherwise, what is the point.

I4C,

People can have opinions based on THEIR experiences.
If that is too difficult for anyone to comprehend, that goes against the very principles that educators preach.

If you or anyone took offense to my post a page back, I have nothing in me to apologize.
I will not go into in depth detail about how my friend who's daughter with a peanut allergy's
situation got so bad with a local high school's teachers faculty and principle who tried to poo-poo everything under the rug. Guess what, they picked on the wrong person. His good friend Thomas J. Spota made sure that principle was released.
The young lady is in college now, doing fine, lucky to be alive. (btw, so is the principle).

I used to have an inkling of respect for teachers as a whole. My experiences with a great deal of them with their pious condescending rhetoric have caused me to despise them. There are many in my community who share equal frustration and each time anything is brought up, the same "yeah well I'm smarter than you..." attitude surfaces.

As in any profession, the few bad apples stain it for rest. It's just a polarizing profession where the great teachers don't get enough credit because the stories that stand out are the few such as mine. Teachers will never change their opinion on anyone's negative perception just as we won't ever respect them as a whole. Always been that way.

Steve... everyone is entitled to opinions, but when people want to make BLANKET statements about an entire profession based on their bad experiences or "a few bad apples", well, you won't catch me apologizing for my response either.

Judging an entire profession on one district or a few bad experiences would be as bad as me saying all BAnkers should go to jail based on the corrupt practices of a few heads at places like AIG and Goldman Sacs.

Here is something we can agree on...
