Doug Weight from the Bench in his new role....

Doug Weight upset with bias against Isles in officiating

Sunday April 10, 2011 7:46 PM By Katie Strang

Injured captain Doug Weight said his time behind the Islanders’ bench at the end of the season was eye-opening, and not just because of the player-coach role reversal.

With a first-hand glimpse of what the coaches deal with on a nightly basis, Weight said he was very upset with the officiating.

“We know it’s not a crooked league, but the point is there is a bias,” said the 40-year-old veteran, who was limited to only 18 games this season because of a back injury.

Weight said he believed the team’s relative inexperience and spot in the standings were factors in the unfair treatment.

“It was pretty evident that the games in [the officials] minds weren’t important to us,” Weight said.

Weight thought the team’s involvement in February’s Friday Night FightFest against the Penguins at Nassau Coliseum two months ago was held against them as well.
During that 9-3 rout of the Penguins February 11, the two teams combined for a franchise record-setting 346 penalty minutes, 11 game misconducts and 15 fighting majors. Both Trevor Gillies and Matt Martin received suspensions and the Islanders were levied a $100,00 fine.

“I just wanted to say that it wasn’t warranted,” explained Weight, who is still leaning toward retirement. “We played hard all year, had a couple of physical battles and it got blown out of proportion.”

Weight said he will take the next three to five weeks to mull his future plans but is still leaning toward retirement.

Time to call it quits.
Not the best fit for this team when they brought him under the financial circumstances but setting that aside, you have to admire his body of work in the league.
Class act, all-around great guy and someone who's earned a great deal of respect around the league.

Doug Weight press conference Thursday, Isles captain likely to retire

Monday May 23, 2011 6:01 PM By Katie Strang

The Islanders released an advisory for a Thursday press conference about Islanders captain Doug Weight's "future."

Weight, who said on break-up day he is leaning toward retirement, will apparently "announce his decision on the future of his NHL playing career."

Have to imagine that means Weight will be hanging up the skates and assuming a position with the organization.

During this past season Weight sold his home in St. Louis, essentially putting down permanent roots in Long Island.

The 40-year-old veteran was limited to 18 games this season because of a back injury and nerve damage. He has 278 goals and 755 assists in 19 seasons in the NHL.

Doug is retiring & is staying on LI. Bill Guerin is staying as well. They're good friends and both like it here. Doug will be involved with the Isles in some form.

I hope Weight takes on some sort of assistant GM job. Has alot of clout around the league.
Even as an assistant coach on the bench, he could help.

I hope this organization will offer him something meaningful. I hope he's doesn't have to take a job with the Rags or Devs. I'm not so sure the Isles will do the right thing, just ask Trottier.

Totally agree Webby. The Isles doing the right thing? Don't hold your breath.

Doing the right thing means putting him in a position to succeed at his next job, whatever that is. He could be a good person for Garth to lean on when it comes time to trade and get his feelings on teammates and other team's players. Keeping him around seems liek a good idea. Curious if he'll end up in NY or even possible at Bridgeport.

Interesting that he gets BOTH an assistant coach job and special advisor to the GM positions. Garth wants him around the players, and Dougie can also get some front office experience. Sounds like he will dabble in both for this season and maybe pick one or the other next season, but that's JMO. Darren Dreger said that Jim Schoenfeld holds the same positions with the Rangers.

Good for him he'll be a welcome addition on the bench. He is respected and young players will look up to him for guidance. He deserves this opportunity and I think he will help us short term. Long term I see him as a head coach somewhere, maybe Edmonton or St. Louis where he is also respected.

Good luck, Doug, and thanks for all you gave as a player (even though I thought he may have laced them up a bit too long).

If there is 1 thing Weight can help with it's the powerplay.
A large pecentage of his points came from quarterbacking the PP. One part of the game he always understood very well.

saw that he said he was running the pp in his interview with deb on nhl network. thank god. I never understood why asst coaches who were never successful offensive players get to coach a completely offensive aspect of the game.

Reminds me of a story Bob Ucker told in his book Catcher in the Rye...Bob Gibson had just let up a hr and the manager yells at Ucker from the dugout to go out and talk to Gibby to calm him down. Ucker is afraid of Gibson and doesn't want to go and shakes off the manager. The manager yells at Uck, "I don't care if you are scared of him, I'm the mananger. Go talk to him". Ucker starts to walk to the mound and Gibson starts screaming at him, "Ucker, get your @$$ back behind the plate and gimme the ffffing ball. The only thing you know about pitching is its hard to hit."

That is what I think about when I see some of these guys run pp's in the nhl...the only thing you know about scoring is its difficult.
I miss these :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: and want more of them

Ha, that's a funny story. Always enjoy hearing it. Very good point about the coaching.
