The New York Islanders have acquired goaltender Al Montoya from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for a sixth round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Montoya will report to the Islanders’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Montoya, 25, has an 11-8-0 record with a 3.19 goals against average (GAA) and a .891 save percentage (sv%) in 21 games this season with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL. The Chicago, IL, native has played in five career NHL games, all with Phoenix, and posted a 3-1-0 record with a 2.08 GAA and a .925 sv%.

Originally selected by the New York Rangers in the first round, sixth overall, of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Montoya has played in 197 career AHL games with the Hartford Wolf Pack and San Antonio, compiling a 96-72-7 record with nine shutouts. Prior to his professional career, the 6’2”, 195-pound goalie enjoyed a three-year career at the University of Michigan. He led the nation in minutes played (2358:51) in his final season (2004-05) and finished his college career tied for the all-time best career save percentage (90.8) in U. Michigan history, third in GAA (2.36), third in shutouts (13), and fourth in wins (86).

Chris Botta: Ray, how come you are so critical of the Islanders?

Ray Ferraro: Because they the last time they won a playoff series, I passed the puck to David Volek!

2 ways to look at this.

koolaid:
"OMG, GREAT trade by Snow, ONLY a 6th round pick??? Like OMG,
he's only 26, a former 1st round pick and some goalies develop later...(see Thomas)...
Garth, great move."

haterade:
"F U GARTH, you suck...you bring in this side burned douche who had terrible numbers
in the AHL?"

realistically:
Not the move that should have been made because of 3 things.
1. Roloson should have never been traded.
2. DiPietro should have never risked injury by engaging Cooke or fighting.
3. We gave up nothing for yet another scrap heap prospect that
will either ensure us the 30th overall finish or get a chance to show something and be turned into a 3rd round pick by deadline or resigned for next year.

You can call me Joe.
Look at the bright side, DiPietro gains a sparring partner.

DiPietro vs. Montoya - one round
Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

Not the place for me to post this but the Boston/Canadiens game is amazing.
Alot of bad blood, good hockey, 6-4 Bruins early in the 3rd...

should be more fisticuffs.

The Bruins are a bunch of thugs, if that were the Islanders getting there asses kicked I would've smashed my TV.

Whether Roli is here or not Steve, the team isn't any better. This team was built for failure last July. The realistic fans knew this since day one. BTW, there was no way there were more than 7,000 in the stands the other night. Looked more like four to me. Sad, very sad. And no one seems to care over there. Even more sad.

Yup. It doesn't matter if ya lose by 1 or 2 goals less with Roli. Ya still lose. Last Summer determined the team's fate and if there were any doubts the season was over after game 25. Roli not traded and DP not fighting changes nothing...except maybe going from a top 1 or 2 pick to a top 5.

Only 4K fans Mike? I bet 20% were Leaf fans. Gotta love weeknights in the suburbs under Kate & Cholly.

I fully expect him to say, in his first interview, the following:

"Say hello to my little friend"

"Mel, I'm not gonna shoot you. Manny, shoot this peiece of sh!t"

"Everybody wants to see the bad guy. So, here I am. Say hello to the bad guy".

Oops, that was Tony Montana, sorry. B)

Not a good move, not a bad move, just a necessary move. We just needed a body and no one's going to miss a 6th rd pick. They don't even televise the 6th rd.

This is the best Snow could do? I mean Montoya, the guy who's played in 5, count them, 5 NHL games. 26 years old and no hope he'll ever be a NHLer. What a suck ass move. Garth has sunk to new lows in sucking as a GM.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

WORST GM in the NHL! Well we can't expect much from a backup goalie anyway.
