With Mark Streit out for quite some time, will Calvin deHaan get the opportunity to become a major player for the NY Islanders? [dohtml]<table border=1 width=800><tr><TD> <div class="headline">Streit injury gives de Haan a chance with Isles</div> <div class="byLine"> By Brian Compton - NHL.com Staff Writer </div> <!-- <div class="newsBody"><span jwcid="@Insert" value="ognl:newsContent.content" raw="ognl:true" /></div> --> <div class="newsBody">UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- He may only be 19 years old, but Calvin de Haan certainly knows the pain Mark Streit is experiencing right now.<br /> <br /> A first-round pick (No. 12) by the New York Islanders in 2009, de Haan suffered a shoulder injury similar to the one Streit suffered during a scrimmage at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday morning. The injury limited de Haan to just 34 games for the OHL's Oshawa Generals last season, but he is finally pain free.<br /> <br /> Streit, though, likely won't be for quite some time.<br /> <br /> "I'd never want to wish an injury upon someone, especially a teammate," de Haan said Monday morning. "I went through it. It (stinks). It's brutal. The first month is awful, actually. You can't do anything. It's such a long rehab. You're very limited the first few months. It's tough. I really feel bad for him."<br /> <br /> With Streit out, de Haan has been presented with a golden opportunity. Prior to Saturday, he was probably ticketed for a third junior season. Now, there's a spot up for grabs -- one that involves quarterbacking the Isles' power play. That's right up de Haan's alley, as the Carp, Ontario native had 63 points (8 goals, 55 assists) for Oshawa in 2008-09 and went 5-19-24 in 34 games last season prior to his shoulder injury.<br /> <br /> "I feel very comfortable at the top of the umbrella or whatever we're doing," de Haan said. "That's where I like to play the most. They haven't said anything about roles yet, but I think maybe now I'll have more of a power play role. (But) I feel like I've got more of an opportunity now. I still have stuff to prove."<br /> <br /> He'll have this week to showcase his abilities to Isles' brass, as the team plays five exhibition games this week beginning with split-squad contests on Wednesday in Philadelphia and Saskatoon. Although there is a vacancy on the Isles' blue line, de Haan insists he won't be placing added pressure on himself.<br /> <br /> "I just treat it as another hockey game," de Haan said. "I've played thousands (of them). I've just got to go out and do what I do best. I'm just going to play my game and have fun and take it all in." <br /> <br /> Isles coach Scott Gordon liked what he saw in de Haan during his first training camp last year and has been impressed again with the skilled blue liner -- so much so that de Haan was slated to stick around with the club all week even before Streit went down on Saturday.<br /> <br /> "We weren't in any rush to send Calvin back," Gordon said. "We'll see what happens with the games here. But the plan was to have all the guys that have been here in camp be here through Saturday and then we'll re-evaluate after that."<br /> <br /> Now up to 184 pounds, de Haan is filling into what was a lanky frame when the team traded up twice last year to grab him at No. 12. The defenseman admitted it's helped him during training camp as he goes up against NHL forwards.<br /> <br /> "I feel a lot stronger than I did last year," de Haan said. "I feel a lot more comfortable with it being my second training camp. I've put on 10-15 pounds since the draft last year, and it's pretty much muscle. I feel a lot stronger in the corners and I feel like I don't have to work as hard almost to keep up with the guys. It's not as strenuous on my body. I feel a lot fresher." <br /> <br /> It's that confidence that has the Islanders believing they could have something special in de Haan, who was a teammate of New York Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto for part of the 2008-09 season with the Oshawa Generals. Del Zotto stuck with the Blueshirts last season, as he quarterbacked their power play and tallied 37 points in 80 games. It inspired de Haan, who is eager for his chance -- a chance that may be coming sooner than expected. <br /> <br /> "I was his teammate for a half a year," de Haan said of Del Zotto. "Knowing that he can do it, I want to do it, too. That's my goal this year -- to play here. If I'm back in junior, that's fine as well. We'll have a strong team this year. Maybe (I can) lead that team to the playoffs. (But) I want to play here so bad."<br /> <br /> One player's misfortune has become another's opportunity. It's all up to de Haan now.<br /> <br /> "The bottom line is you have to out-perform somebody," Gordon said. "Now there's one less guy to out-perform."<br /> <br /> Follow Brian Compton on Twitter: @BComptonNHL <br /> <br /></div> </td></tr></table>[/dohtml] |

Nice kid and hope he's going to be something but I vote back to juniors. Maybe if he didn't have a shoulder injury last year and played a full season I would feel different but I think for his long term development he should go back to juniors. This is of course assuming we are not still rebuilding and this team is trying to take the next step. This team has a very tough October and adding another rookie to the mix I don't think would benefit this team. There are already going to be a bunch of new guys learning to play together on Defense. |

amazing player and has the right chemistry to be an nhl pro...but he'll be worth the wait. at 184 lbs vs guys that are 215 lbs (average) coming to you at full speed, you better hope you don't get something worse than a shoulder injury. he's gotta go back to juniors for at least another year. |

Tough call...he's only 19 right? but, when you think about how well Tyler Meyers and Del Zotto did last year at the same age...it might be worth a look. Can they do the 9 game thing and then decide? |

Right to the point with the big squad. Like we have a choice? He'll be fine. 19 is the new 23 in the NHL anyway. We should put all the young guys up and let them play. I would rather see DeHaan struggle than some 37 year old has been sh!t the bed night after night. I know this won't be the overwhelming sentiment here but when you bring guys in to fill squad rosters as was mentioned in another thread, would you rather see DeHaan or Anders Erikkson (35 yrs. old) or someone similar? Hell, the total years of the guys they brought in was 166, or an avverage of 33.2 years old. Enough already. Bite the bullet annd play the kids. All of them. And lose the old has been crap, it doesn't work now, didn't work before and will not work in the future. Bring 'em all up. All of them. Period. |

Bring up the 35 year old. You have a gem, you take care of it and make EVERY effort to see it's polished and sparkles. 100 rookie phenoms turned to gahbage because they were rushed should tell you something.....meanwhile the DRW have rookies that wait, and wait and wait some more and come into the NHL ready to take a veteran's spot because there IS NO RUSHING PROSPECTS under Kenny Holland's reign. So we either go by what works for Detroit all these years or what fails miserably and will continue to do so in LI hockey. Rush him or be patient and involved with him? Some people just GOTTA GOTTA see the soufflé in the oven before it's ready. |

And Tavares. So two work, 100 don't.....and about every Red Wing prospect does. So if Lotto pays better but being thorough and diligent pays well enough, do you swing for the fences or be disciplined and try to not count on luck? Besides, defensemen take longer, smallish guys still growing need time and DeHaan is both AND is a special talent. Rush him in or let him maximize his ability in a safer environment? |

And you'll be the first one on this board asking for Gordon (or as you call him, Gorton's) head when we're getting killed every night with OLD TIME HOCKEY players. It worked in Detroit? What team were you watching or comparing us to? some names would be helpful with truthful examples. Old does not work in the NHL anymore. And we have enough old guys on this team already. We have good young talent so let's play another two years with has beens while they mature on the farm. Yeah, right, that'll work. We burnt out exactly who? Bailey? Okposo? Tavares? Some names here would be nice as well. Instead of just spouting off with the same crap every time you post back it with fact. And then, if we for some unknown reason follow your advice stand up and take your lumps when it doesn't work. |

What guys were kept in Detroit's system until they were ready by Kenny Holland....hmm.... Federov. Lidstrom. Franzen. Osgood Fischer Abdulcator. Datsyuk. Zetterberg. Lebda. Kronwall. Howard. Lilya. Maltby. Draper. The list goes on. Now Islander prospects rushed to duty? DP. Weinhandl. Brewer Lindros Connolly Pyatt Torres Nilsson Okposo (not working too bad but will he ever be Iginla-like now?) Bailey (will he ever hit his cieling? I think he can but could he have been better off going back to jr.'s?) Tavares is strong and a bring-right-in type......now we have to see if they rush Nino. Players learn better in Jr.'s and the farm because there is less pressure. Has anyone I listed from our farm hit or exceeded their potential? And yes, the best development could mean vets for a year or two. The horror. I'll take Bailey at 100% of his potential and watch Dean McAmmond another year rather than bring Bailey up right away and see him maybe just get to 80% of his potential. The Wings do it....and they have the Cups to back it up. The Isles once did it. Now? Another lottery year to look foreward to (the injuries cement that now). |

what? You mean lets take every young Islander hockey player that had little success and blame it solely on being rushed and compare them to allstar talents as justification for an argument? Because Brett Lindros Mattias Weinhandl should be in the same sentence as Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, and Federov. Now I got it. |

Oh, so since our first rounders don't do as well as Detroit's third and sixth rounders....YES, we don't draft as well, but do we develop well at all? You're missing the entire point. Michael Jackson runs our fan club....we just GOTTA see kids and lots of them! Now if DeHaan isn't ready.....we gambled wrong and rushed him. If DeHaan is almost ready....we gambled wrong and rushed him. If DeHaan IS ready, we gambled right. If we monitor him and allow him to grow stronger and mature and develop his game farther, letting a young defenseman hone his craft during a MEANINGLESS season (or did you miss the news?) GUESS WHAT? WE DIDN'T GAMBLE. But Michael Jackson loves the children.....bring all the kids up. |
