Hi guys There has been a bit of interest in the light that I made up for John that rivets or screws under your hood to illuminate the engine bay at night, so I decided to do a parts list and instructions on how to wire it up. Firstly you need the LED light panels. I bought mine off eBay and they are really cheap. You can use them to upgrade your interior light as well. The only downside to being cheap is the postage time is terrible! Here's the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-5-10-x12V-48-SMD-LED-Panel-Car-Interior-Light-Bulb-T10-Dome-BA9S-Adapter-White-/370905539310?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item565bb162ee Next you'll need a need a small toggle switch. You might be able to buy them at an auto store. The smaller the better! If you use the small ones you will need to solder the wire to the tabs behind the stitch instead of using terminal ends crimped to the wire. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2pcs-Small-Mini-LEDA-3-pin-SPDT-ON-ON-Toggle-Switch-1-5A-250VAC-2403-/400588257094?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d44ebb746 You'll also need a few yards of wire, an inline fuse, a ring terminal to attach to you battery, some blind pop rivets, and a sheet of thin aluminum. The concept is that the led panel sits parallel to the ground when the hood is up. My first model didn't have the closed in side and was just a long strip bent in a zigzag shape, which still works fine but doesn't look as good ![]() Otherwise the first image below is of the body marked out on the sheet of aluminum. The hood sits about 45deg when it's up so whatever size you decide for light panel, just duplicate it on the other side. ![]() The second image is of the folded body. If you have trouble getting clean bends then try creasing the folds first with a cold chisel and it will help when you bend them. ![]() Drill the hole for the switch closer to the ridge cap of the body so the body of the switch and it's terminals dont end up sticking through and contacting the hood once it's installed. Also make sure the switch goes side to side so it can't accidentally switch on if you hit a sharp bump. Before you attach the led panel test it!! Lay the led on the body and see where the wires run then drill the body, cut the terminal off the light(keep the wires as long as possible) and put them through the hole. Try not leave any burs on the hole that could wear through the wire. Solder the black wire to the aluminum body so the light can ground through the hood. Then run the red wire to the right switch terminal. Check the third photo for the wiring configuration but test it before you solder because the stitches may differ between brands. To test is just touch the red wire to the positive battery terminal and touch the body to the negative. ![]() Once it all works find where you want to put it and screw of rivet it to the skeleton of the hood. Use a short drill bit so you don't punch through and dent the hood skin out. Rivet in place and run the wire down the hood to the hinge and then along to the battery. Make sure you put the inline fuse in before you connect it. A 1.5amp fuse should be ok because the wires on the led panel are pretty fine. ![]() Let me know what you think or if you have any questions or any better modifications that will better it. |
