Ok..... I know someone here has had this problem. My 89 Trooper will start and run only while I hold the ignition switch to the start position. When I release the key, the motor dies. when I start it and hold the key on and release the cluth pedal it also dies. Ive looked at the thing and know its probably a very simple problem. I just need to step away from it and figure it out. Any suggestions? Arch |

I know this an older thread but I had a similar issue yesterday and putting in an new alternator worked (The old alternator failed all tests) I just wanted to add that I found another tip that can be used to diagnose. By running a jumper on the fuel relay you can activate the fuel pump from the battery manually. This allowed me to start the trooper without issue and keep her running; you have to be quick though as your fuel pump starts running as soon as the jumper is in place. This is not a fix but as the article stated it would allow you to get home if needed so thought I would share.See attached image for placement of the jumper in the fuel relay. |
