Engine rebuild or reman

Just joined the forum and am excited to get going on fixing my Trooper. It's an 87, Arizona truck, no real body issues, interior needs attention, but everything works. The motor however uses more oil that gas and will require lots of attention. The big question is rebuild the original (155K miles) or buy a remanufactured engine and get the warranty, new parts? Along the way I plan to do the Weber carb mod, add a header, electric fan (probably), not sure if I'll fix the A/C. I've already added manual hubs. I'm excited to get going on it and think that it will turn out great. My son and I use it to explore our SE corner of AZ. Thanks.

I'm hardly the expert at this but I went through a restoration of my 1986 in 2013/2014. The "rebuilt" engine done by the guy who sold it to me failed after 600 miles. Ouch. I then had a Spartan rebuilt engine installed. There are many companies out there who do rebuilds. For the peace of mind, I would recommend that you have a rebuilt engine installed. Many companies out there do rebuilds on your engine. Since you have an 87, you have a few options. Big names like Jasper and others carry decent warranties.

I put the Weber carb on and did not look back. Be warned, the instructions are pure garbage and I had to have a guy custom fabricate the throttle linkage wire holder. It was insane and costly to get it going. The carb works well. It can be fun but be prepared to scratch your head as you wonder, "Why???" at certain parts in the process. Some of the Isuzu design was simple and well done, others are as confusing as it gets. Keep us posted and ask questions! If you have a direct question, send emails or private messages to certain people on the forum for a faster response.
