Hey John I am doing the head gasket on my 4ze1. I am trying to get the timing sorted, and think I have it down but just wanted to confirm with you first. Please excuse my ignorance as I am learning from scratch as I go. I watched your video on the timing belt configuration and that's fairly straight forward. The part I want to check is in your video on installing the head you said all you need to do is place the distributed rotor in line with the bolt when the engine is at TDC for it to be perfectly timed. Are the valves positioned at TDC piston 1 when the arrows on the cam pulley and the head line up? Should I reinstall the distributer before or after I bolt the head on? Cheers |

The 4ZE1 is set to fire on #4 at TDC. This is VERY unusual, this is the only motor in my 25 years of working on cars that I've ever seen one that didn't fire on #1. You can install the distributor before you install the head or after, I prefer to do it before-hand, just because it's easier to get to. You should check the mark on your harmonic balancer and see if it's slipped or not and if so re-mark it, so that you can adjust the timing with a timing light once you get it back together ad running. Let me know if there's anything else you need. Thanks |

Also, make sure you have the rotor button on the dist shaft when pointing it at #4 and don't point the NOTCH at the top of the dist shaft to #4. The notch actually points at #1. doing this will have you 180 degrees out. Oddly enough, this is a common mistake with newbies. |
