Hey Johnny and Co So I finally have my Jackaroo (aka 91 Trooper 4ZE1) where I want it mechanically and I am very happy with how she runs. To bring every one up to speed.... I have removed the air filter box, shortened the hard plastic intake pipe, moved the intake sensor to sit over the top of the extractors and attached a pod filter directly to the intake sensor. Before you say it, I know the position of the pod filter right above the extractors isn't ideal but I have put a heat shield on it and it will eventually be re-routed inside a custom filter box for the snorkel. So the reason I removed the air filter box is to put a aux. battery in its place which leads me to my query about upgrading my alternator When I switch on the running lights and headlights I have noticed that they dim slightly at low revs and brighten as the revs increase. I am not sure what amperage the alternator is that I have on it but I am thinking about upgrading especially once I put the aux battery in place. The aux battery will be charged through an isolator. So the guts of my question is..... 1) Is the running lights brightness changing with engine revs normal or is it a wig of a tired alternator? 2) is there an alternator that will fit the 4ZE1 that will give me 70-80Amps? Cheers |

I don't know what these alternators are rated at stock. I don't think my headlights go dim when the revs come down though. I could be wrong, I'll pay more attention next time I'm out after dark. I personally don't know of anything that'll bolt up to replace the factory alternator. |

So I think I have already answered te first question. I will check wiring and regulator which should be causing the fluctuations. From there I just have to find a more powerful alternator that will suit. |

AussieAndrew, The is a USA vendor that has 140A alternators for 270$USD, (http://www.qualitypowerauto.com/catalog.php?item=287), a bit spendy and shipping to OZ probably not practical. I'm sure if you cast around, you'll find a shop in OZ that can give you a similar high quality unit with less out of pocket. Try contacting the firm here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRAND-NEW-HOLDEN-JACKAROO-ALTERNATOR-1988-2004-/320527841461?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1991%7CModel%3AJackaroo&hash=item4aa0f2b8b5 and see if they have a 70A (or better) that will fit the 4ZE1. Hey guys So I just ordered an alternator from a 6VD1 motor which is the 3.2L V6. It's pumping out 75Amps which is way better than the 55 for the standard 4ZE1 motor. Thanks for your suggestions GB. This one should fit straight on and plug n play without any fiddling other than swapping over the pulley. Will let you know how it goes. Cheers |

Hey all I put the 6ve1 75amp in and it all went to hell. First thing I noticed was the battery and brake dash light started glowing dimly. I researched it and apparently that is the indicator that there is a low charge coming from the alternator. There are two possible reasons that I can think of. First is a faulty regulator trio diode cluster. Second is that the pulley from my old alternator is bigger and when I changed it over the 6ve1 alternator is not getting enough RPMs. Anyway, I didn't have time to check if the regulator was faulty so I sent it back and ordered a 4ze1 65amp alternator which is now in place and humming away perfectly. I am sure there is an option out there to put a higher amperage alternator but I am happy with the 65amp for now. Hope that helps someone out there. |

Upgrade your ground first. I got some heavy gauge wire used for welding and ran it from the - to the engine and to the back of the cab. It cost me 12$ and my lights shine bright. This might clear up the problem with the stock amp and could only help things if you decide to upgrade. |
