engine cutting out; engine going off when coming to a stop

Hi guys, I have an 87 trooper that has been cutting out when slowing down or coming to a stop. Basically goes off when I depress the clutch either to downshift or stop - I just find the engine has gone off and if I step of the clutch while in motion it comes back on and drives normal. Its weird because sometimes when I sense it wants to go off and step on the gas slightly to maintain it stumbles and I have to eventually let it go off and restart - then its fine. Has a mechanical fuel pump, replaced the sparkplugs, airfilter and fuel filter - what could be the problem?

The problem is intermittent, happens at any time but has been happening quite often of late. Car Idles fine at around 800rpm.

That carb is equipped with a fuel cutoff solenoid which screws into the side of the carb. It cuts the fuel supply to the idle circuit when coasting in gear and also when you turn the motor off in order to prevent run on (dieseling) Sounds like it may be sticking. You could eliminate it, but there's a technique, I'd have to walk you through it. (assuming this is the problem)

Interesting Johnny its an option I'm willing to look at because its really annoying especially on light traffic where the steering becomes heavy and the braking.
