Oil pressure gauge spike; Help!
Topic Started: Sep 20 2013, 02:43 AM (440 Views)

My oil pressure gauge just started spiking without warning. It cranks right up as high as it will go 8kg/cm which is 115psi!! Has me creaking out! It did this for a while tonight and then returned to its normal range 3kg/cm.

Any ideas or tests I can do to see if the oil pressure really is spiking massively or if it's just a faulty sensor.

Ok. Let me try this again. Since no one else is responding, I'll throw in my 2 cents. Is that worth more or less in Australia? Anyway, I can't imagine the pump pumping at that psi. Did in knock or ping or otherwise sound different while the gauge was acting up? Sounds like a defective sensor or something electrical. Did the oil light come on when it spiked? There. That was worth at least 2 cents. I use Paypal. LOL

I think your 2 cents is worth about 2.1cents here so I guess I'm getting good value advice ;)

There was absolutely no change to the way the engine is running or starting which makes me think it's just a sensor/wiring/faulty gauge issue. There is still oil pushing up to the rockers and from what I gather if I was pumping oil at 115psi then I would be lowing oil seals all over the place and my dipstick would have speared through my hood.

Where is the oil pressure sensor? I think that will be my first port of call. Then Ill look at the gauge cluster.

Andrew, the oil pressure gauge works on a ground signal. More than likely your sending unit is going bad but it could also be the wire that goes to the sending unit has rubbed bare and is touching bare metal, that will spike an oil gauge.

Hey Johnny it's appears robe a wire issue. I gave it a quick wiggle this morning which seems to have fixed it for now. When I get a spare moment I'll give it all a good tidy up and look at replacing the wire and terminal, it was pretty gunked up.
Thanks again.

Can a bad terminal or wire give a false low reading as well? When warm my 86 2.3L dips down to about 15 PSI at idle. This is the third engine. First was blown as a rebuilt. Shop said bad oil pump. Second engine (installed) blew on the jacks at the shop because it would not hold pressure. The third engine (Spartan Engines) at cold temp always shoots up to 60 PSI and when it gets warm dips down to 15 psi at idle. At speed, the pressure reads from 45-30 psi at speed. I think that I have bad wiring etc... Any input? Johnny... I will post pics of the restored Trooper soon enough. I'm 99% done. New interior, body work/paint, tranny rebuild, stereo, powder coated rims, new tires in the OE stock size... the works. I love this truck and will be proud to post the images.

Factory oil pressure gauges are a nice "guide" but should not be considered "accurate". I like running a mechanical gauge so I know exactly what the true pressure is. Engine coolant temp has a lot of influence on oil pressure. I like seeing them run 1/3rd or lower... Good for the head gaskets and good for the oil pressure.

John, there are all kinds of mechanical gauges out there. What kind or size should I pick up? I don't care much about the brand but want to be sure that I pick up the right size. 2 1/8", 2 1/16"... I imagine that a gauge that read up to 80 psi instead of 100 psi would do the trick. Any info that you could share would be welcome. Thanks!
