Instrument lighting issue; Dash lights come on when brakes pedal pressed

Got an 89 Trooper with an interesting "problem". When I press the brake pedal, all the dash lights come on, as well as the outer marker lights (parking lights). I'm not certain if this is the same or a related issue or if it's something totally different, but the brake lights and parking lights seem to be reversed (i.e. the parking lights on the rear seem to be brighter than they should, and when the brakes are pressed, the overall brightness only changes a little bit. Someone has added a 4-prong trailer wire for towing. Any thoughts on these issues?

Easy to diagnose, hard to fix. You have a wiring crossover somewhere. It's not an earth issue by the sound of it. I'd say you brake light cable has rubbed through and is touching the others or something of that nature. Do you have a tow bar fitted. That's usually the most common quad of issues because the wiring is exposed. Start by unplugging you brake each brake light bulb and see it it fixes the problem. Then atleast you have a starting point.

Also just had a thought...check which type of bulb is in the brake lights. It should be a double contact type. But after rereading your post I'd say the guy before you messed up the wiring when he added the tow plug. A cheap test lamp will be your best friend.

Yeah, sounds like somebody hooked up some tow wiring wrong or something.

Kinda' what I was thinking as well. I'll get out the multimeter and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions, especially about pulling bulbs one at a time. That makes sense!
